A neighbour recently got broadband, I get their wireless working on their laptop but their desktop doesn't seem to have aLAN card, if that's what's required to take the lead from the modem to the PC.

I take it this can be purchased and fitted as a plug and play device, is that correct? If yes, what exactly should I be looking for and where is the best shop in Limerick to pick one up. The PC is a Dell Dimension with Windows XP.

Take the side off your PC case and check to see if you have any PCI slots free on the motherboard. These are long white box shaped sockets on the board. If you do then get yourself a PCI lan card either from the likes of PC world or try online, ebay, maplin etc.

Most motherboards have ethernet built in though, unles it's very very old.

Thanks, that's what I thought too but no sign of a spot to plug in the RJ45 lead.

PC only a few year old, I think.

Dell Tower type PC, just thought could it be in the front?

Thanks, that sounds a lot easier to install - Question, if the PC doesn't have the LAN card would it be too old to have a USB connection?

I can get the neighbour to check it out tomorrow anyway.

the PCI LAN card would be the cheaper option over the
    wireless USB device

I can't imagine a PC would ship without a LAN card - very unusual if you ask me!

    this is the board

    http://www.txcesssurplus.com/catalog/5122%20Board.jpg

the pci slots are the white ones on the right.

You should pick up a LAN card for about €15 or so. thats the cheapest (and fastest) way to go.

with some of the older dells a LAN card was an option and most people didn't bother with it.

I would be very suprised if that PC doesn't have an ethernet port.. it should be on the back near the keyboard and mouse ports.

If you do decide on the USB wireless adapter there should be a couple of USB slots on the front of the tower as well, they won't be at all obvious. the Dell I have which is about the same age has 2 USB ports at the front on the very bottom of the tower.

it's a windows 2000 era machine (i know its running xp)

Those were home pcs and generally didn't ship with LAN cards as standard.

Sorry, haven't a clue, all I know is it's XP, is there a way of find out?

Click on Start --> Run and then type in winmsd. That will analize your system when it reports back go to Network --> Adapter

That should say if you have a card or not.

stick the service tag into the support section and it'll tell you exactly what it shipped with. The LAN card was an optional extra on that model.

If you look at the link I posted above it has a picture of the motherboard. The board doesn't have an integrated LAN card like most of the newer ones do. That only leaves a PCI LAN card. If the white slots are empty then you don't have a LAN card. The brown slot is for your graphics card.

    Hi

If the PC is pre 2000 you may have a problem .USB wireless adaptors need a "USB 2.0" as far as i know they wont work with the older USB 1.0.The safer bet is to add the card ,plus they were never that genourous with USB sockets back then

All Dells since about 2000 or 2001 have LAN ports on the motherboard. What kind of Dimension is it?

  22. #22
Add a wireless Pci card. Cheap as chips on ebay.

For anyone who is looking to get a connection in those hard to reach places of the house, I can't recommend ethernet over power (Homeplug's) enough.

I had a youtube problem with IE and found Firefocks fixed it.

I've had sound problems from time to time but solved them by going to the motherboard maker's site and reloading and updating the sound elements - drivers etc.

If it's playing itunes then it shouldn't be the hardware - there are malware/viruses that punish you by disabling illogically things like sound. You could google your problem as there are intricate advanced modifications you can go into in the sound section of 'Entertainment'.
It might be that some box has been ticked/unticked.

The most direct thing I'd suggest is go to the motherboard site and tryand reload all the sound stuff again.

Also, you seem to have a slight problem with your current keyboard. When you press "x", the letters cks, are used!
