Has anyone seen Grabbers yet ? The reviews on IMDB are all from non-irish folks so I'm wondering if it's irish or oirish ?
Empire Magazine gave it a decent review... I'm not one for horror movies but one of the IMDB comments likened it to Gremlins and that's about the level I actually enjoy, as it's as much or more comedy than horror.

'Cosmopolis' has been and gone over here Eamo (a lot of studios seem to be releasing in Europe first these days) and the reviews of it weren't great at all.
'Compliance' from the bits i've seen online and read in the papers is a film that could do quite well over here. Very dark thematically and very interesting concept (apparently inspired by actual events)

'Grabbers' was really well reviewed by audiences and critics at the Galway Film Fleadh, a number of people who saw it told me it was a must see. They compared it favourably to 'Tremors' and some of the other quality 'B-movie' type films of the past 20 years.

Hollywood director Tony Scott jumps to death from bridge

Hollywood director Tony Scott, famous for films including Top Gun, has died after jumping from a bridge in Los Angeles, authorities have said.
The Los Angeles County Coroner's office said Scott's death was being investigated as a suicide.
British-born Scott, brother of Alien director Ridley, shot to fame in the 1980s with a string of action films.
The 68-year-old's blockbuster hits included Crimson Tide, Days of Thunder and Beverly Hills Cop II.

but I thought the Ted trailer was brilliant and was let down, so gonna treat this movie with distant nonchalance....

I watched this over the weekend and it doesn't live up to the reviews IMHO. It starts out pretty good - 2 English ex-military guys working as hitmen take on a final job for the money, but it slowly descends into a 70's style Hammer horror movie. The wicker man bacically. Word of warning, if you have a weak stomach, do not watch this. The violence is GRAPHIC (think Gaspar Noe's Irreversible) - particularly a scene where a guy gets beaten to death with a hammer.

the cast were decent enough but the actual story / structure just didn't work, and there wasn't anything like the amount of action I'd expect from a Bourne movie.

Agree Meh - came to mind........

The action was a rip off of Ultimatum in many respects - motorbikes and roof-top chases
The initial training scene/location had fantastic cinematography though.

Action scenes were blindingly quick and didn't have credibility of the earlier Damon movies

That said Renner and Weisz worked well as did Norton.

The inter-cut of the parallel Jason Bourne story does leave the door open for a further one in the series - whether its Renner or Damon - who knows.... but Pamela Landy is facing a tough time :-)

I really struggle to take any spy/conspiracy movie seriously to be honest. I saw TBL on saturday night and again, struggling to see why I should care about the characters/be afraid should they fail/understand the bad guys agenda. I don't know if they're plot or character driven movies 'cos they never really seem to have strong either.

Safe House was a good example of this.

To be fair, the actors were great in TBL. I like Renner and Weiss and Norton is probably my favourite actor. I didn't see the other Bourne movies though so my opinion may be a bit skewed

Has anyone seen the recent 'Sherlock' re-imagining from the Beeb..?

Bought the Blu-Ray box-set from Amazon recently on a whim and I love it. I'm not really into crime shows but this is really really good, both Holmes and Sherlock's characters are really well done

Saw the new Total Recall last night.

For a movie that is a remake of an Arnie flick with Colin Farrell as the main character, I was pleasantly surprised. Would definitely see again(partially because I was in the drive-in cinema and fell asleep during what seemed like the most crucial 30 mins of the film) but yeah, recommended

EDIT: falling asleep was actually no reflection of the film, I was just wrecked

Also I couldn't find a thread about books and it hardly seems worth starting a new thread for it but yesterday I picked up 'The Damage Done' by Warren Fellows. About his (rightful) conviction of drug smuggling in Thailand in 1978 and the subsequent 12 years in prison. I was finished by the end of the day. I just couldn't put it down(seriously I missed crucial parts of the Munster match and lay awake much of the night reading it).

A word of warning though, it's really brutal reading at times but very very worth it. If squeamish, avoid.

  29. #1523
Thought total recall was a solid sci fi flick. Not spectacular but enjoyable. Like the reworked story a lot in particular rather than rehashing the old one and car chase scene

  30. #1524
Find it very good. Far enough from the first version, and nice universe à la Blade Runner that passt with what I imagine for the future on the Earth, and always pleased to see the Brits evil as the Dark Empire of Granbretan is in Moorcock's novels... . Et puis il y Kate Beckinsale... Even more beautiful when she is nasty and angry if it was possible...
And for the next summer, will maybe spice the invasion of the Colony by the UFB Lions...

Total Recall isn't a remake of the first movie. It is the movie true to the story of Philip K. Dick.

The Arnie one went way off the grid in my opinion but was still a reasonable action flick.

Some really good movies taken from Dick's dystopian tales(as well as some solid and enjoyable sci fi):
Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, Imposter, Screamers, Paycheck, Adjustment Bureau and probably a few other I haven't seen or forgotten about.

For anyone who hasn't seen A Scanner Darkly then check it out.

Expendables 2 is awesome. Total 80's action flick. Leave brain outside the cinema, and enjoy.
**** gets blown up and people get killed (a lot), with some awful one liners that are so bad, they're brilliant.
