Anyone watching Brazil in the soccer? 2-1 down to Mexico in injury time. I thought this was supposed to be the reincarnation of the 70's team, they just look a bit **** to me. Spain and Barca are playing a different sport to what the Brazilians are persisting with, which is largely just individualistic trickery. They don't even have anything close in terms of first touch and control to what the Spanish have.

Shay Given retires from international action

    Updated: Monday, 13 Aug 2012 19:21

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has announced his retirement from international soccer.
Given, who made the revelation via Twitter, is the most capped Republic of Ireland international of all time, having amassed 120 caps.
The Aston Villa netminder made his debut against Russia in 1996.
The 36-year-old tweeted: “After a lot of thought and consideration, I have made the most difficult decision to retire from international football.
“It's been a great honour and privilege to play and on occasion captain the team. I shall remain a huge fan of the team as I have been all my life and I wish them every success for the future.
“I wish to thank all the players, managers, staff and most importantly the most wonderful fans in the world.
“Finally I would like to thank my wife Jane, my two amazing kids and my entire family for their unwavering support over the 16 years and 125 caps.”

Very sad day, great servant to the country. Good opportunity to rebuild now after the shambles of the euros. It'll probably prolong his club career too.

Thanks Shay for a great contribution to Ireland. You were class.

I've never had much time for the game. It wasn't the sport itself it was the players who played it, how they played it and the attitude of many supporters. I did back the Irish team, and I still do, they have heart and passion which is missing from the premier league. The one player I have all the time in the world for is this man, Shay Given. He is an absolute gent, has given his heart and soul to Irish football, every friendly, every **** defence, he never stoped. I'm absolutely gutted to see him retire. Watching him play for his club wont be the same. He is by far and above my favourite player. There's no way we'll be able to replace his quality. I've pretty much lost the motivation to watch Irish football now. There isn't an Irish keeper around who is as good as he has been for us. So genuinely sad to see him go. Thanks doesn't seem enough.

So so sad to see him go. I thought we'd get another 4 years out of him. He's been the greatest servant to Irish football and the best keeper we've ever had. So so gutted to see him go. Wish he'd change his mind. Just horrible news. Our best player by far.
It takes a different quality of a player (of a human) to put up with the likes of Paul McShane playing in front of you. A different class.

The Maul is Back!! LONG LIVE THE MAUL!!

Stringer is bigger even than his own immense shadow. Pound for pound, he is the best tackler in the world. If you put him into bag of cats he\'d come out without a scratch. He was hit very late for Murphy\'s try. And when he got up, as we knew he would, the crowd cried his name as if he had just fixed the economy.Billy Keane-After Munster\'s famous loss to the AB\'s.

The Bull-Truly irreplaceable, a mountain of a man. 100 caps!!

I met him a good few years ago in Newcastle, they were playing Southampton the following day, he asked us if we were going and we said we might. He told us to go to a certain security gate and that he'd leave tickets there for us, we went down the following morning half expecting to see nothing there, what a pleasant surprise to see an envelope with 4 tickets for us. We'd never met the lad before.

I then met him again about 2 years later in a club in Dublin and he asked me if we enjoyed the tickets!!! I nearly fell over that he remembered us, my sister-in-law was with me at the time and she nearly wet herself . What a true gent

As an Arsenal fan, im glad he's gone, to get £20+ million for him is ok as long as it's reinvested in a player or two (wishful thinking probably!!), just hard to swallow that he's gone to manu, but then again as they say, the only loyalty in football is from the fans!! I know it's bad to say... but I hope he has a shocker at utd

Getting paid 200,000 a week. Where is Slur Alex moaning about City splashing the cash now?

This is his last big throw of the dice to get that 20th league title before he leaves Man U in the ****ter. However when you are relying on 38 year olds in midfield then I don't think so.

Very high risk investment for a player who has only ever completed one season in eight. I like him as a player and was delighted to see him finally get an injury free run last season but there appears to be little logic to such a heavy investment with no possible resale value.

He wont have to play the same number of games he did when he was at Arsenal though.

10.4 million a year (before taxes) and any other endorsements etc I'd imagine ( I presume that's the pre tax figure?)

Paddy that maybe disgraceful. ......but he wouldn't make top 50 salaries in major league baseball

Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez tops the charts with $30m salary......that's just salary with the Yankees ..

About 60k for every time he swings a bat....

In return for this anecdote and the brilliant updates tonight from MP from the great 'Trane78 and Collinho, am seriously, in my deepest of hearts, GPS, supporting Cork for the football AI. Screw the talk of a Donegal win being 'good for the game' - being from Kerry am used to that type of guff, and want to see the best traditional football team win i.e. Cork. Just may stop the rot if they do and make attractive football the way to go.

Gaelic Football and hurling are 'games'. football is a professional sport. where the demand justifies the large amounts paid.

IMO only thing stopping Man City dominating European soccer with increasing numbers of Galacticos is the fact their fellow Arabs and Gulf neighbours, Qatar, are obviously prepared to break the bank at PSG, and are actually wealthier than Abu Dhabi AFAIK.
Man U in trouble after the odious creeps in the Glazer familt failed to sell their shares in NY lately. Approved RVP money only to keep 'Sir' Alex in line and to reassure (wrongly) that they are not almost out of cash at Old Trafford.
