Green party initiative to encourage people to grow their own food.

Seems from the "tightening your belt" thread we have a few market gardeners here already. I'll probably have a lot of spare time this June, might try and clear some space and prepare some of the garden for this.

Here's a song to get people in the mood.

Some would call that Paul's finest work outside of the Beatles. Not me though, I thought Wings were very misunderstood.

I have been doing this for years and love it. You cannot beat the taste and quality of home grown veg..picked and eaten within an hour.

Joey if you are looking at starting in June than start some planting seed later on in April or early May..you can get salads, beans, carrots (pefer to be in situ though), brocolli, courgettes etc all started early in pots or trays and they'll be OK to put in in June (early June though).

Have to say I don't have a clue what I'd be at, except there's a good bit of garden that is pretty much overgrown waste. Would be good to try something like that alright.

And Jenta http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm2YyVZBL8U not wings though.

He was still a Beatle when he wrote that, if they'd gone for one more album that would have been on it.

    EDIT: Quickest hijack ever.

He was still a Beatle when he appeared on Smiley Smile too. Released as solo song. Hard to believe Jealous Guy couldn't get on Let it Be either.

Well I was coming from the angle that chewing celery on a Beach Boys record constitutes 'outside' the band more than writing a song while in the band that he'd later record solo.

Anyway enough of the pointless hijack, we both know the Beatles threw away better songs than most bands since have written.

    Back to the vegetables...

Maybe hire out a rotavator so..make sure you clear the ground of weeds. It can be hard work. Best of all try raised beds. Better drainage and easier to manage.

I just knocked a few up out of deal planks. They have lasted years.

Plenty of good books in the local library too.

I can't believe I have to share a thread with Paul Shaggin' Mac and the overrated Beatles!!!

Would now be a good time to mention that Charlie Dimmock gives me the horn?

    No?

I'm already formulating a plan to release 50 aggressive rabbits onto your precious vegetable patch. As I'm a fan of irony the rabbits will all be dressed in Sgt. Pepper outfits.

irony and gay haute couture it seems.

Raised beds might be a bit overambitious at this stage Zeno, hell flower pots sound dangerously close to overambitious.

Missing out on the good ones joey. Lots of interesting plants around now. Cherry tomatoes both red and yellow are the way to go.

No wonder Bugs made that sudden exit. Did you ever confide your rabbitopia plans to her?

She never knew, it was only after she left that I became bitter towards the world and began planning the rabbit driven overthrow of civilisation starting with the vegetable patches of people who rag on the Beatles.

I've given up on tomatos as I live on a windswept hill in West Cork. If you have either a greenhouse or a very sheltered sunny spot then tomotos are well worth it. Again the taste is way different to the shop bought ones, most of which are picked unripe so that the will be a vague reddish colour when they hit the shops.

Start them off in the green house and then move them against the house wall.

We had some very nice home-grown purple sprouting broccoli lastnight - I just planted that and some cabbage and carrots last year which did OK. With increased optimism I've fenced off a patch 20' x 14' and in it I have 14 square yards of raised beds. I just used 6" x 1" rough sawn timber. I've started off some seeds on the windowsill in the conservatory so hopefully we'll have much more veg this year. The boss is delighted cos there's less lawn to mow!

Funny that this has been mentioned.

Clare County Council will launch 37 allotments in Shannon on Monday and they have all been snapped up. There is now a waiting list for them.

AFAIK this is the first local authority run scheme in the country.

You don't really need a huge amount of space to get started - lots of things do well in containers like tomatoes, herbs, carrots, lettuce, courgettes etc. Carol Klein had a sow called "Grow Your Own Veg" and they had a little patch 3m x 3m in which they grew loads of stuff. I'm hoping to grow the following in my patch: lettuce, onions, garlic, chard, spinach, sprouts, broccoli, peas, runner beans, broad beans, french beans, beetroot, radishes, fennel, celery &leeks. I have tomatoes, strawberries, courgettesand carrots in pots.

    Here's a link to the 3m plots:

I had a Corporation allotment when I was in Dublin which I left in 1984. There are none that I know of in Limerick but some guy has them let out privately near Murroe.

This thread is quite timely though as I've justhad raised beds put in to our very small garden. I planted some cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce and leeks in peat pots. There's something showing itself today but I've forgotten what it is. Looking forward to things getting going though.

As regards a suitable song this gets my vote.
