Pretty simple question really. I'm yet to come across anyone who would not be annoyed to see him on the plane....

no offence but, can't this be discussed in 1 of the many lions threads?

  3. #3
I think it warrants a poll. It's going to become a very touchy subject when the media frenzy over the Lions selection begins to build, after HC matches.

so, we should open a poll for every single player that might get a look in this summer

Flutey could be the first player to play for and against the Lions, he's an import from New Zealand who seems to be more mercenary than most, I reckon it merits a bit of discussion.

I won't like to see him playing for the Lions, mostly because I don't think he's that good a player. If you want to pick someone to make history by playing for both teams (he he) you could at least have the decency to make him a class player.

I'm fairly shocked hes being considered to be honest. If hes played for the Maoris that should rule him out in my opinion, I know its not the same as being an all black but its pretty close.

What does it say about Irish and British rugby that we can't get a centre born here to go down and represent us ... I'd send D'Arcy or Earls down before I'd send him

I think you underestimate him, JF. He's a good 12, a more limited fly half. But he has pace, strength, a step a boot and good distribution.

The question isn't should he be playing for the Lions. It's should he be playing for England.

Once he qualifies for a home nation, then you can hardly question whether he qualifies "enough" to tour.

Given the number of threads we've had on here about Mafi, Warwick and Manning's chances of an Ireland shirt I think there's more than a little inconsistency.

The two best 12's in the British Isles at their best are Henson and D'Arcy imo, but both have had awful years with injuries. If either were fully fit, and had been for the season, I doubt Flutey would make the squad. Hell, if Geragthy ever gets fully fit, it's debatable as to whether Flutey will even hold his English place. Flutey had an ordinary enough 6 nations with the exception of the French game, and who knows what happened there?

Their pack finally gave him some go forward ball and he wasn't stuck outside Goode.

He was outstanding for Wasps last year (admittedly in a very good midfield) and was very good at LI when he was there.

His game is very different to Darcy's and to Henson's, but in a race for selection he remains the only 12 in the northern hemisphere with both a good kicking game and an explosive running game.

Even if he does either of those things less well than Darcy or Henson, the fact that he does both weighs significantly in his favour.

He is a fine player andwill be in the test side 22. Its a very tight call between himself and Shanklin at 12.

He plays for England, and therefore is eligible. Don't really see what the fuss is about.

Sewa is right, it's a tough call, but on balance I'd have him slightly ahead of Shanklin. Both should get a run out prior to the Tests, which may ultimately decide who starts.

    ..No.
But if I had my way it'd be just Irish players on the tour.

I don't have a problem with him playing for england - thats just the way rugby is now - I'daccept Ireland doing the same but prefer if they didn't.

I think the Lions should be different though, they are not a regular international side, and think they'd become pointless if players like flutey play for them.

Only if you weren't against them playing for Ireland either - some of us are being very consistent on this by saying no to multi national teams.

Good to see common sense in the voting. He should not be playing but I've a feeling they'll pick him.

Common sense me arse. Its revisionism. We may not like players like Flutey or Cipriani or Henson but if / when fit they have more talent than the options like Darcy, P.Wallace or Darcy again. Actually bit ofa biase appearing ther isnt there?

    Like Mike Catt??
Girlfriend\'s English Boss: That Gaelic Football you lot play is a bit mad isn\'t it?

Girlfriend: That\'s nothing, you should watch a game of hurling. Think hockey except the ball is harder, it flies around the place and the sticks have bits of metal on the end of them.

    GEB: Woah, sounds dangerous.

GF: Yeah, you can understand why some lads wear helmets, sure people have died.

GEB: What, from being hit in the head?

GF: No, they were shot by the English.

Just to clarify, are you saying no to multi-national teams as in the Lions or the Barbarians? Or do you mean national teams with non nationals (ie not born/raised there but qualifying through residence/pretend granny!)

If he's eligible for England he's eligible for the Lions. The issue is whether he's one of the two best 12s available.

Many on this thread would, I suspect, (and I'm one) support Mafi's inclusion if the 7's representation rule was rescinded.

My own preference would be D'Arcy and one of Flutie/the big Welsh 12 whose name escapes me (not Henson-the other one).On reflection I'd probably take D'Arcy for physicality and Flutie for finesse and let them fight it out on tour for the starters jersey.

Your thinking of Jamie Roberts. He's a goodball carrier but i don't think he should travel. I would take Darcy and Flutey.

I agree with you regarding Roberts. He burst onto the 6N scene but then faded. The same happenned to Powell. I think the fact that Wales did not win the GS/6N has excluded both.

Regarding Flutey, he will tour, injury permitting. He has as much right to as Mike Catt, who, IIRC, played in the 1997 tour of SA, or any player who is qualified to play for the four nations.

As quality 12s are extremely thin on the ground, D'arcy has as much chance as anyone else of travelling...
