How did Mike Kelliher go last year? I know he got a good few games but I never saw him play. He's young anyway so maybe he'll make the academy next year. Was he playing 12 or 13?

he is 22 now played a few matchs but got injuried again

  4. #334
Think he got rushed into the squads too early from his knee injury. Had hamstring and calf issues all season. Never got the chance to really get fully fit. Hopefully with himself and lukas going for 12 they'll bring the best out of each other

Comparing last years academy and this years, I think there's a few gaps.

Yr3 Brian O'Hara wasn't mentioned as getting a dev contract - has he been dropped?

I take it Dave Kilcoyne has been given a full contract?

Stephen Foster, Lucas Kunz, Criag O'Hanlon, Darren O'Shea, Cathal Quinn and John Randles were all sub-academy last year but didn't seem to get a Year 1 academy postion this year, does this mean they're gone?

  6. #336
Kilcoyne given dev i think. O Hara released, probably cause Barry O Mahoney resigned

Foster immigrated, craig and lukas left academy set up last yr

That's why we've only 3 in the senior squad I'd imagine (we had 5 this time last year). I was very very impressed with Scannell on the u20 world cup. He looks the real deal

Apology if is has been discussed elsewhere from the Academy profiles I see Harry McNulty from this years U20's has been added. I seen the U20 in Donnybrook back in early September did not really catch my eye (but then I am no expert on center play). Anybody know much about him he was listed that night as Dublin University assume that is DCU.

    Academy Update
    5 October 2012, 9:22 am
    By The Editor

We hear from Munster Rugby Academy Manager Peter Malone as he talks about the new players that joined the academy this week.

"We have two new additions to the Munster Rugby Academy, Harry McNulty and Darren Sweetnam, and we selected them after the Interprovincial U20s campaign. Both impressed in the games and we felt that they would do well in the academy and would be excellent prospects for Munster over the next few years.
Harry is an outside centre, who went to Rockwell College and was playing with Dublin University last year where he was involved with an excellent system similar to an academy programme, nearly full time training.

He played for the Irish U19s and has done well for Munster since he has come down. He has got an excellent attitude and it was a big move for him, switching college courses to UL and joining Young Munster, but he is setting in well.

It was a big move for Darren as well in a difference sense, he has been an inter-county hurler who showed very well for Cork in their campaign last year but he has always been a very good rugby player as well. . I think he has got the benefit of a great year playing with Cork and that will stand to him. Playing in front of 60,000 people in Croke Park is a big challenge for a guy doing his leaving cert.

He played for Bandon Grammar all the way up, and was involved with Munster at all age grades. He has traditionally played out-half and would have played number 10 for Bandon but because he came in a bit late with the U20s we put him in fullback and it worked out very well. Darren isn’t position specific at the moment, he is a natural running back anyway so he can slot in to a few of the positions and we will make a decision when he settles in more. He is moving to UCC now which is a great environment for rugby players.

Malone talks about the recruitment drive for the academy, “We target positions that we would feel there is a need for but we only bring them in if the standard is there. We have to get the quality and we wouldn’t compromise on that, the standard has to be high. The idea of the academy is to bring players through to professional rugby and it’s not just to bring guys in to fill positions.”

“We want our academy guys to challenge for Munster contracts over the next few years as we have seen with players like Simon Zebo, Danny Barnes, Conor Murray, Peter O’Mahony, Mike Sherry and Dave Kilcoyne to name a few.”

I am surprised that the Scrum half Haugh has not made it into the Academy. From what I seen of him in the U20's he has an "interesting style" of play super box kicking and can place kick accurately. But maybe we are covered in that position for now . Interesting piece on MR site this morning with Peter Malone . http://www.munsterrugby.ie/news/10923.php

There will be one or two front row players added in the coming weeks aswell, strange that they werent added at the same time as these two lads. The under 20 scrum was srong during the interpros and destroyed both Leinster and Connacht, and faired well against Ulster after a soft start

  23. #351
Harry McNulty played with YM 2nds last weekend. Seems handy enough, Don't know if he's playing 21's this weekend. Will be lining out again with 2nds on sunday i'd imagine. See what some of the young lads are really made of going to play Thomond in the stadium of light!

    Academy Update With Peter Malone
    8 November 2012, 10:49 am
    By The Editor

We get the latest on all things Academy as we chat to Elite Player Development Manager Peter Malone.

Munster A away to Leinster A …. "The A’s are away to Leinster in their third Interpro game next week and it should be a crossover squad, with senior players joining academy players in that game. Our guys have stood up well in their B&I Cup games so it would be good if there’s a mix between senior and academy players as the guys can learn from the seniors and it’s always a good run out."
    Injury Update….
"We’ve a lot of bumps and bruises at the moment, but on a positive it was great to see Ryan Murphy return from his shoulder operation last weekend and play for Dolphin against St. Mary’s and now he’s gone up to join the Irish 20s camp.
Darren Sweetnam picked up an ankle injury in his first AIL game for UCC and has been out for 3 or 4 weeks now, but he should be looking to come back next week.
Unfortunately Corey Hircock picked up an ankle injury when playing for Garryowen against UL Bohs and is getting an MRI this week so we don’t know how long he will be out for, and Shane Buckley came away with a knock also and will be out for a few weeks with a groin injury. Darren Moroney who lined out for UL Bohs picked up a small hamstring strain.
It’s a heavy time for our guys after playing U20s, B&I Cup, and AIL so these are some of the small things they tend to pick up with the workload at this time of the year."
    Player Focus….
"Johnny Holland has been turning out well for Cork Con, especially the last few weeks kicking last minute touchline conversions. He’s showing his mental strength and it’s something you look for in an out-half when the chips are down to kick that last minute conversion or penalty to win.
He’s played a few positions for the A team, a bit of out-half and fullback so he’s going well. He’s been playing a lot of games so he should be happy with how he’s going at the moment."
    Ireland U20s Camp….
"As mentioned Ryan Murphy has gone up and we have another few who impressed in the Munster U20s campaign, Niall Horan, Sean McCarthy (both Shannon), Brian Scott, John Fitzgerald (both UCC) and Rory Scannell (Dolphin) also involved so hopefully they’ll prove themselves up there and a few of them will get the chance to pull on the green jersey.
Overall we’ve had reasonable numbers in the underage camps. The National Talent Camp took place in Clongowes last week and we had reasonable numbers in the schools, U18s and U19s. Guys impressed up there so hopefully they’ll get called up to go again. We had 9 involved with the clubs, 11 with the 19s and 8 with the schools."
    Staff Involved With Irish Sides….
"Overall we’ve a big involvement with Irish sides at the moment. Elite Player Development Officer Greig Oliver is obviously the Backs Coach for the U20s and he’s done a great job there for the last 2 years. EPDO Colm McMahon has now come on board with the Ireland U18 Club side as Forwards Coach off the back of his coaching performances for the Munster Schools.
We also have Damien Mordan our physio and our strength and conditioning coach Joe McGinley up there working with the U18 Club side.
Not forgetting outside of the academy Mark Butler from Rockwell is involved with the U18 Schools side as Backs Coach.
From an Academy point of view it’s good for those guys to bring back feedback and they’re getting top level experience of coaching so it’s all beneficial."
    Busy Period….
"We’ll look to take a break around Christmas for our players. They should be free to go home and relax for a few days. The seniors have a busy Christmas period and have a download week this week so we just work through this time.
We ran a Munster Rugby Excellence Camp in conjunction with the Community Rugby department in Musgrave Park last week for 13 to 15 year olds and it was a very enjoyable experience. We got top level coaches down to help out with specific areas and there was a nutritional model, strength and conditioning model and rugby technical model and I think all the players got a lot of it.
We were also in Limerick last Tuesday in UL with around 200 players trialling out for Munster teams for next year already. This was camp one and we had regional development squads, the 18s, 19s and 20s all involved, so that was a busy but productive day overall."

Have to give the deadsite credit. They seem to have gotten their **** together this year.

The newsfeed on the homepage here is a great addition too by the way.
We'll have to uncuff him and "de-dildo" him, obviously... Smash up the furniture like he was chasing you all rapey. Fortunately, he's Italian so that shouldn't be too hard to sell.

    Academy Update
    13 December 2012, 12:26 pm
    By The Editor

Elite Player Development Manager Peter Malone fills us in on the latest updates from the Munster Rugby Academy.

Injury Front.... "Corey Hircock (ankle) is progressing better than we thought and hopefully he will be back in early January which is much better than expected because we thought he would have had to go for surgery which isn’t the case because he has rehabbed it so well.
Cian Bohane picked up a knee injury playing for Dolphin which was unfortunate timing for Cian because he had been going well for the A’s and was getting good game time. He’s now looking at the end of January or start of February for a return to training.
Darren Moroney (hamstring) had been out and is back fit, he lined out for UL Bohs in the Munster Senior Cup in November and he has been named in tomorrow night's A squad.
Shane Buckley picked up an ankle injury in the A game last weekend so he his out for a few weeks but we’ll have to see to what extent as we continue to assess his injury."
    B&I Cup Representation....
"Some guys got their opportunities and I think they took them. James Cronin got his first B&I Cup start at prop, he did well around the field, worked very hard and we scrummed reasonably well. The whole pack and James should be happy with that.
Two young back-rows got good game time, Jack O’Donoghue came on for Shane Buckley, he did very well and is still only 19 years of age but we were down a few back-rows so he took his opportunity.
Ryan Murphy played at 7 and impressed, showing the football he has gotten under his belt in the last year playing for Dolphin and he can be very happy with his day out against Rotherham."
Munster A v Rotherham Titans in Musgrave Park....
"We’ll go with the same game plan but we’ll alter a few things. I expect them to come very hard at us as I think they were surprised by our scrum and our maul, so I imagine they’ll hit us hard in the opening 20 minutes.
We’ll play with the same philosophy as we do all the time, similar to the seniors, with a bit of width and pace but maybe we’ll tweak a few things here and there, and in attack."
    Upcoming Weeks....
"A few of the guys will be going into International camps, underage camps. The U19/U20/U18s Clubs and Schools camps are all taking place over Christmas so we’ve a good few guys going up to them. Academy and sub academy guys like Ryan Murphy, Sean McCarthy, Niall Horan, and Darren Sweetnam will probably join the U20s camp so there’s a good few guys involved.
There’s no club or A games until the 5th of January so the Academy players will take a well-deserved break over Christmas with a week off."

Is Haugh not getting a look in with the Irish u20s? I saw he wasn't at the last camp either! I know McGrath is nailed on 9 if Leinster don't pull him out like Ulster did with Jackson. Is he that fair down the pecking order that Leinster have 2 9s and the Ulster and Conncht 9s are ahead of him?

    He might be injured?

It should be interesting to see if Munster have greater numbers in the Ireland U20 squads this season.

i know he hurt his groin before match for YM, unsure at the moment and i would've thought it would have been disclosed in the De-brief above if was. Was suprised that he wasn't at the last one. I think, not 100% sure, that munster have only a small few up at it. Leinster dominant with Ulster supplying a lot of others too.

Sean McCarthy is a second row from Kerry, played with Rockwell last year. Afaik he also played a bit of minor football for Kerry and was on the Irish basketball team.
