Took your advice. The first bottle opened was the last in stock so we went for it anyway and another after that. The change went down so well we went for a different one again. They were all grand. Conclusion; there is no such thing as bad wine, just some better than others. That bloody head throbbing must be from the bellini beforehand.

Wine prices set to rise after poor grape harvest

    Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - 01:17 PM

European farmers have warned that drought, cold and hail have led to the worst wine harvest in up to half a century.

Farmers union expert Thierry Coste said that while some price increases were expected, he hoped excessive rises could be avoided.

France’s grape harvest is expected to slump by almost 20% compared to last year. Italy’s grape crop showed a 7% drop – on top of a decline in 2011.

The Champagne and Burgundy regions were hard hit by weather conditions that particularly affected the chardonnay grape.

Mr Coste also said there may be an upside to the bad harvest – the quality of the wine produced will be good as it is expected to be more concentrated.

What might a fella do with this bottle folks?

It was not correctly stored, having been in a box that was lugged around a few different attics in the last 17 or 18 yrs. I have a vague recollection of getting it as a gift in '95 or '96. I had no idea I still had it. I thought the box contained books and other papers from back then.Click image for larger version.

Info gleaned from google searches suggests that it was poorly rated, is not currently rated, and may well be gone off.

Sink job or chance a sip? Any novel suggestions?

Yeah pour some out into a wine glass, smell it and look at the colour. If the colour is brownish to off purple, or it smells bad or like sherry, it's probably gone off. If colour and smell seem reasonable have a sip

Kavy........Bring it down to me and I'll let you know what it was like. If its corked you can tell fairly quickly, might have some cork taint or be just plain dull, past its best. But if its provenance contained a few attics it could be shagged, but thats the beauty of vino you never know!

A serious glug for hard-core gluggers.

Currently half way through my second bottle. Begad but it's some nectar - I wish that I had bought more.

Currently half way through a very drinkable Chenin Blanc from LIDL of all places. It's a South African, Western Cape, Cimarosa. A cheapy but you wouldn't think it.

You'd know with your nose and before that by viewing the cork (I see you have)...the structural integrity of which I assume has been substantially compromised? Was it upright?

...no big loss...but seriously...that's alcohol abuse man!

Great deals in Tesco recently. Loads of really good stuff normally €19.99 down to €10 and a further 25% off if you buy 6.

Hard to beat. Have the Christmas stock fully taken care of cheaper than I ever did before, by a long chalk.

Unoaked chardonnay and the sauv. blanc from the Groote post vineyard in Darling, WC. I've never been a white wine fan until I was introduced to the stuff from this place. On honeymoon we popped into the vineyard for a few hours. Would highly recommend.

Got it in LIDL the weekend before last, they had another Spanish red I was considering at a similar price but I took a chance on that one on its description. Very surprised by it!

Some of ye may have heard, but Wine Buff aren't raising their prices for December. (as in the €1 increase).
I've bought my wine weeks ago anticipating an increase, may need to buy a few more now.
