My old laptop is on the way out, and I have found a Dell laptop which seems to satisfy the requirements: 2GB RAM, 160GBHDD etc., but seem to recall reading on this site that they were either unreliable or sales support was pathetic.

Any advice for or against the purchase of a Dell would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

have had two dell laptops. the first was fine except that it came with windows millenium which was the biggest pile of crap microsoft ever came out with. had some problems with the internal modem (due to windows) which a support engineer helped me solve in the depths of the machine settings over the phone

my second was very good and the only problem i've had was the dvd player sound going about8 or 9months after purchase (within warrenty). I mailed them and got an automated reply asking me to download some diagnostics software and run it and send the results back to them. I then got a call saying that my dvd would be replaced and what address would i like it delivered to and had it in a day or two

have heard bad storys as well but i havent had any trouble

Have had several Dell laptops and no problems with any of them. Have an XPSM1530 at the moment which I am in love with.

Work in IT and we have thousands of them, very reliable. Support can be crap because some of it is far flung places, but thats the same with most manufacturers now.

I am on my third Dell laptop and I have never been happier.

I had HP/Compaq's for years but moved to Dell and never had a spot of bother. Any minor issues which have ever arisen were sorted very satisfactorily and promptly.

My previous two Dell machines have gone to good homes and are still working well. I normaly change my laptop and home PC every 18 - 24 months because I use them for work.

I recently changed to the Inspiron 1525 (laptop) with 3Gb RAM, 250Gb HD, 9 cell batteryand Vista Ultimate. Free integrated webcam and free cover of my choice. (No I didn't go for Bubblegum Pink)

Anyway, I love the feckin thing. It's very mobile and I can't fault it at all. I got it during the March sale for €1,062. The day after the sale finished, the same machine was over €1,400. I did damn well.

    Good luck with your purchase.

That's the one I'm looking at in particular. I've seen a Sony one that has the same spec but it is £200stg more expensive.

one thing to be weary of is that if you do this you may not get support from dell anymore. when i had my first laptop with windows Millenium i took it off and put 2000 on and when i rang dell asking for assistance detecting modem they couldnt/wouldnt help me until i put Millenium back on

i munst remind my mate who works for dell this actually as he told me recently if i get a new laptop with vista i should dump vista and put xp on it

Working off this Studio for the last 9 months and no problems. 800 Euros from what I can remember. Very happy with it. I haven't had to deal with their customer support though.

Whe I bought it the said something like 14 working days for delivery. Then I got a call saying it would be effictively 2 months. Itold them cancel immediately and they got it to me under a month which is 18/19 working day so not terrible I suppose.

make sure the laptop is entitled to the windows 7 upgrade.

I know all regular dells get that now.(not sure about outlet machines) Basically you'll get a (free i think) upgrade to windows 7 when it releases. You'll need to do a fresh install of win 7 (thank you european commision) instead of an upgrade but win 7 (even the home premium edition) is far superior to vista.

I've been playing around with the release candidate and its deadly!

I've had my dell laptop for about 4 years and theres never been a problem apart from having to replace the battery because it was old. So I'm a happy customer.

note that the prices in the dell outlet exclude VAT & delivery charge, so that xps m1330 will be over €800 all in.

Free delivery at the moment. VAT brings it up to around the 750 yo-yo mark.

I've had bad experiences with Dell laptops in the past. They're similar to Macs in the sense that if you want to buy an accessory for it, it has to be Dell manufactured.

Accessory? USB, n'est pas? Also the only other things might be RAM which is easy lemon squeezy.

I was thinking of getting a netbook but realise that DVD also required so looking at a laptop now.

How does the laptop described on previous page by TWIB compare with, for example, this:

    http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Acer_Asp...Laptop_LX.AU50 X.018/version.asp

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 / 2 GHz ( Dual-Core )

Hard Drive - 250 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 5400 rpm

Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium

Screen - 15.6' TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA ) - 24-bit (16.7 million colours) - CineCrystal

Optical Drive - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM - integrated

Graphics - Intel GMA 4500MHD

Graphics - Intel GMA 4500MHD - 64 MB

Bluetooth - No

Notebook Camera - Integrated - 0.3 Megapixel

I only have good reports re my dell plapyops in the past myself too...my current opne is 2 years old and still going great, thou Im about to upgrade in the next few weeks I think...

I'll be buying mine from Dell in the States too...ends up far cheaper, and in the past, you could get higher spec stuff too....

Anyone recomend any of the newest Delllaptops out there?

Quick Straw poll, I'm looking at 2 laptops in the dell outlet. The only relevant differences being:

    1) Inspiron 1545 : Intel Core 2 Duo T6600(2.2GHz,800MHz,2MB)
    2GB Ram
    15.6" WLED monitor

    2) Inspiron 1545 Pentium Dual Core T4300 (2.1GHz,800MHz,1MB)
    4GB Ram
    15.6" CCFL monitor
Graphics 512 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330

So the CCFL monitor is not as good but it comes with a graphics card and extra ram
but the WLED has a better processor, i can get more ram, so is wled without graphics card preferable to ccfl with it?

  30. #30

Went into PC World and was browsing laptops to see if they still had CCFL as well as WLED.

Sales assistant came over and asked could he help, I asked would I be able to see and compare CCFL and WLED monitors. He looked at me blankly and said I'd have to look through the monitors they hadfor the types I mentioned and look at them. Hadnt a breeze what I was talking about.

Maybe none of the systems in high street stores have CFL anymore but none of the notebooks said what they had in them one way or another
