What a knob Mr Kiely is.  I inserted his quote but thought the better of it - don't see why he should get any more oxygen from me.

Here AG.  It's just a line, but it's nasty and unnecessary.

Just read it

Does the adage, if you've nothing good to say, then say nothing at all, even enter this guys head.

Bill McLaren was inducted in the Rugby Hall of Fame, this w**ker journalist wouldn't get inducted into a pothole

Watching his family during the moment's silence at the game
yesterday was quite moving.

He took the piss out of Leinster for letting Munster poach Uncle Pat  from us as if this ws some sort of a massive coup...which says a lot about the guy. I presume they're bosom buddies and that's how Kiely got to write the piece for Glorious Saturday.

re: Kiely's comment.

I must admit...the only part of his comment about Bill I don't agree with is the nausea bit.

In other words, it would be disingenuous in the extreme to suggest he wasn't twee sometimes....in the same way Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh and many other commentators of that era are blissfully twee sometimes...but....I think it was unfair to single out McLaren for an attack like that. By all means attack twee commentating or have a go at the cliché ridden post-match analysis..which sometimes drives me to distraction...particularly with the bbc...apart from when woody and jonathan davis are in the chair.

as an aside, I had to switch over when Luke Fitzgerald took the mic at half time during the bbc coverage of the irish game. He was trying way too hard to talk in pundit-speak....craming as many clichés in as possible. It's not Lukes fault..he was obviously coached beforehand by the BBC team but it was painful to watch.

Incidentally Ó'Muircheartaigh and McLaren were two of my favourite commentators, before anyone jumps on my back....and while I would be the first to agree that they were very twee sometimes, I would also be the first to say that they were unique with the way they could inject emotion and intense drama into a game.

McLaren deserved all the plaudits he received over the last week....and then some.

ya totally agree in regard to luke, why waste the viewers time interviewing a guy still linked with the squad, he is not going to give an honest analysis (not that any of them do), he is going to spend a few minutes gathering cliches and spinning it in order not to offend kidney

In the tribute programme, John Inverdale said that he'd turn around 2 mins after a match and he'd (Bill McLaren) would be gone, on his way home to the borders, job done...

You could see how close he and his Mrs were, no hanging around on the piss chasing skirt for ould Bill, was a proper family man but of course that is considered Twee by the type of John Terry's standards of today.

When he was inducted into the hall of fame, someone had to pick up the award on his behalf, because he was at home too busy preparing for a match commentary that weekend.

True professional RIP Bill

Valencia,

to answer your earlier question - yes, the son in law was Alan Lawson who scored that wonderful try under the posts at Murrayfield.

Yeah, thought so. Twas great stuff, cheers for the clarification.

Was it his wife so who died of cancer or was he married to Bills other daughter?

I think the girl who died was called Jane

think inverdale came across as a bit of a pr**k to be honest - had to laugh at him suggesting that england could win the 6 N in perpetuity  ! twickenham 2004 - a great day !
