Outstanding but the fool deserved to be eaten for thinking he would be accepted as a friend of the bears. The bear fight scene is amazing and worth renting the DVD alone for.

Saw The Host last night, definite recommendation.
It's kind of a Korean monster movie (formaldehyde tipped down a drain results in a massive man-eating amphibious newt thing) but it's actually a very neat political commentary rather than an eat-em-up.
The dysfunctional family of a little girl who's been taken away by the creature escape from hospital where they've been quarantined and try to track her down. Meanwhile the American army are trying to call the shots and sideline the Koreans. Very funny as well as action-packed. Not quite enough gore for my taste though.
Interesting thing is the rights have already been bought by an American studio to remake: seeing as it's the most anti-American film I've seen in years, I'm not quite sure that's going to work.

Saw Casino Royale last night, very impressed. I had doubts about Daniel Craig carrying off the title role, but he does very well. Not as well as Eva Green though ....

Dunno if any of you guys have seen the new Rocky trailer but after being initially worried at the thought of wheeling out the franchise again i heard a few previews couple of weeks back saying it was actually going to be quite good. I have to say after seeing the trailer and hearing the auld theme tune im actually really looking forward to it, definitely the only role i can watch stallone in any more

Was dragged to see "STRANGER THAN FICTION" the other night and was quite surprised by it. Will Ferral was excellent in it, not his usual role.
Its not oscar material but its qute entertaining all the same.

Good God - another Rocky movie?? He can hardly talk, for God's sake..
As for Spiderman 3 - I'm sure the effects will make it worth watching but Toby Maguire makes Pat Kenny look animated.
Saw 13 Conversations about One Thing the other night. Alan Arkin, Jphn Turturro, Matthew McConaughey... very dark, understated but great character acting.
Rabbit Proof Fence - scary that this is a true story!! About the missing generatation of aborigines in Australia. Excellent movie.
Everything is Illuminated - Elijah Wood post LOTR - very different. A story about a young Jewish boy who goes looking for his roots in Ukraine, where a young woman saved his grandfather's life. Fabulous cinematography and an excellent comedic performance from Eugene Hutz as Alex. Really recommend it.
Primer - time-travel movie with a difference! A bit mind-twisting but well worth a watch. Made by the leading actor with hand-held cameras, friends as characters, borrowed houses for sets, still looks very professional.
More to follow...

Casino Royale - am not normally a fan of Bond movies, but this is a great action movie that's a bit more 'real' than previous Bond movies.
The Prestige - very good plot, that keeps your attention, even if some of the twists and turns are a bit surreal, well acted.
Stranger Than Fiction - not a normal Will Ferrell movie, slightly arty, but well told. The ending is a bit bland.
Would recommend all three.

The Squid and the Whale - Definitely as good as some people on here made it out to be. Very, very funny.
Good Night, and Good Luck - A film about a CBS reporter's opposition to a US senator's anti-communist witch hunt in the 50's. Written and directed by George Clooney. Brilliantly shot, with a very strong cast putting in some great performances. Well worth a look.

Saw Little Miss Sunshine last week. Very good film that was better than I had expected. A road trip movie but not in the clichéd way that Hollywood usually churns out. Plus it also did look better on the big tv.

I'm off the beer for the month so have been to the pictures the last two weekends. Saw "Last King of Scotland" on Sunday night. Good film, 3 out of 5. Excellent performance by Forrest Whittaker.
The previous weekend, I saw " Flags of our Fathers" 4 out of 5. It's directed by Clint Eastwood, I heard he has another one due out next year that tells basically the same story but from the Japanese point of view.

Syriana I liked, but there were a few too many plot lines, meaning
that no one line could develop properly.
History of Violence stank the place out, I thought. Woeful story, and
the family reactions in it were very poor.
Saw Apocalypto as well. Poor I thought. Gibson's gore fetish
continues, and the ending was way too neat. And it was too long for
what is basically hide-and-go-seek in the jungle.
For those fans of martial arts, check out Kung Fu Hustle. Funny in
places, but well made and excellent over-the-top fight scenes.

Saw Rocky last week, not great imho. Nothing much happens for most of the movie except the tired old cliches you'd except. The fight scene is well done, though - more like a pay per view TV style rather than "filmed". The fight itself is pretty predictable.
Also recently saw Shortbus. Jayus! Not for the faint (or prudish) of heart. Good movie though.

Went to see Babel, a drama directed by Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu (of 21 Grams fame). Easily one of the most powerful films I've seen in quite a while. It centres on 4 interlinking storylines set in different parts of the world, and has a central theme the consequences of inadequate communication. Not vital to see this in the cinema as I doubt a giant screen will add to its impact in any way. Think 'Crash', but subtle.
Also saw Little Miss Sunshine last night and was not disappointed, despite the reviews it was getting having built my expectations up to a high level. It's a charming, well acted and hilariously funny piece of work.

Babel - 3 strands of closey intertwined nothingness masquerading as a meaningful piece of cinema. Think Crash but even more tedious and self regarding.
