One of the only good thing about last Saturday was I bought a Compaq CQ60, Intel Celeron Processor, 160 gig HD, and wireless enabled on the way up to Ravers in Currys at the Sprucefield Shopping Centre in Lisburn, PC World were useless - no stock. Good machine for storing music, photos, internet, and all that kind of stuff, won't be using it for gaming.

Stay away from AMD and celeron processors.  XP (pro) is the best MS OS but Vista is OK if you have enough memory (min 2Gb) and run the latest release/patches (run it as Classic...).  Lot of crap laptops out there (incl Dell Vostro...).  Don't worry too much about disks (you can buy/upgrade cheaply).  HP/Compaqs and Toshs are rugged, but basic & pricey.  Sonys are crap.  Rest are what you'd get in Lidl/Aldi (& priced as such....).  As was said PC world (incl Curry, Dixons) don't really do great deals.

Dell 1525 is a nice laptop and you should be able to get a bargain (price/spec wise) (€5-600 should net you a decent spec).  Others out there too, but shop around and beware.....

MACs are fine but very pricey......

was looking at dell US site and interestingly you can get vista, or for an extra 100 dollars XP!

I've had an Acer Apsire for a couple of years now and have not had any trouble with it. One thing that might irk some people is the screen is really reflective - but it seems a lot of laptops are moving in that direction so probably not worth worrying over.
On the whole AMD v Intel thing, if you're not into serious gaming the amd will be grand. There's maybe a 5% difference between "equivalent" intel and amd cpu performance, with the intel usually a fair bit more than 5% more expensive.

Make your priorites ram and hard disk space, and after that it's whether you want something portable or powerful. And if you'll be doing a lot of work on it at home splash out and get an external keyboard and mouse and you'll be far more comfortable.

Also OS-wise, there is a little mentioned third way. I have ubuntu installed on the laptop (dual-boot with xp) for work stuff and find a lot of the apps it comes with feel much snappier than anything on windows while doing the exact same thing. Also, it is free, which is always a plus.

i'm having an annoying problem with with wifi connection.. it keeps dropping the connection every so often.   My wifi settings say i've got full signal at all times .

It just drops the connection for a few mins then picks it back up and this may last for up to 30 mins then it might drop again.

I'm using an external wifi card.

Any help much appreciated

Clean install vs upgrade install, any advice gratefully accepted.

Nrs Kavy's laptop came with vista premium installed but we have now rcvd the discs required to upgrade to windows 7.

The machine has only been used for browsing since she got it so there's no issue with saving data.

Is one way better than the other to install and if yes, is it as simple as following on screen instructions?

Would go for a clean install, if you have no data you want to keep.  Download Windows Defender as your anti virus as well.

Agreed. If you have nothing you need start from scratch. Put in disk
and follow instructions

Thanks folks.  Just starting the process as advised now.  Don't be surprised if I'm back here during next couple of hours asking questions prefaced with WTF .  (I'm out of my comfort zone here.)

Got a b***h of a virus last night - Internet Security 2010. Its a fake antivirus that cripples your machine, won't let you do much, and tells you to purchase their protection. Really irritating - it totally took over my laptop. Keep an eye out for it, although you'll know you have it, trust me.

And go here to get rid of it:

Got a new Laptop there last month. Windows 7 pre installed.
Has a habit of stalling regularly when I have several apps
running like Internet and iTunes. Wont even allow me ctrl alt
delete and I need to power off to get it going again. Any tips.
Can I reinstall Windows 7? Didnt get any discs or anything
with it I dont think because it was already installed.
