RAFAEL BENITEZ has admitted Liverpool had to pay top price to get Jermaine Pennant in the summer.
The right winger, who faces his former club Birmingham at St Andrews in the Carling Cup fourth round tonight, cost Liverpool around stg£7million, even though he had not fully proved himself in the top flight and had plenty of personal baggage in tow.
It looked a huge gamble for the Liverpool boss, and it has still not fully paid off.
But Benitez revealed Liverpool's needs were so acute at the time that they were prepared to meet Birmingham's top asking price.
Benitez said: "Sometimes when you are looking for a player you really need, then you have to pay a little bit more than you wanted to do.
"I do not know many right wingers in this country who are better than Pennant playing in the Premier. Who else, (Shaun) Wright-Phillips at £21million?
"For us it was a decision we needed to make because we needed a specialist for a certain position. I was not thinking too much about the price, only the player and what we wanted."
Now Pennant could be in line for plenty of stick from his former fans, but Benitez says: "I hope the Birmingham fans will understand what a good player Jermaine was for their club and that we paid them very good money for him."
Benitez sends a team to the midlands, where his side won 7-0 in the FA Cup quarter-final in March, with one eye on the crucial Premiership trip to Arsenal on Sunday.
Not even travelling is skipper Steven Gerrard, along with Jose Reina, Sami Hyypia and Luis Garcia, which means the likes of Pennant, Robbie Fowler, Craig Bellamy, Daniel Agger, Mark Gonzalez and Gabriel Paletta are in line for a run out.
Birmingham defender Martin Taylor will be hoping he can wipe out the memory of that 7-0 thrashing, which he describes as "my worst night in football".
Taylor said: "It will always be my darkest day.
"That night our pride took a real hit. But we are a different side now, full of young players who have never faced Liverpool."

France striker Djibril Cisse is planning to return to first-team action in the next week or so after recovering from a broken right leg.
Cisse, who is on loan at Marseille from Liverpool, suffered the injury while playing for France against China in a World Cup warm-up game in June.
The 25-year-old told France Football: "I should be back into competitive football by mid-November."
Cisse also broke his left leg when playing for the Reds in October 2004. <!- E SF ->
He has taken about five months to recover from the injury on both occasions and predicted it will not be long before he gets back to full fitness.
"I want to bring Marseille back as high as possible even if I've missed the beginning of the season," added Cisse. "I know that I'm going to be back to my best.
"After my first injury, it took me one month to get back on top. It should be the same this time."
Cisse finished top scorer in Ligue 1 in 2002 and 2004 and Marseille will be hoping he can match those exploits to help them regain some form after three defeats.
"I have to bring some panache, try things people will not always understand," said Cisse.

Rafa Benitez's agent has claimed the Liverpool manager would consider a coaching job in Italy.
The Spaniard is widely regarded as one of the game's best tacticians and won the UEFA Champions League in his first season at Anfield.
Last term, he took The Reds to FA Cup success, although he has yet to launch a sustained bid for the Premiership title.
He has regularly stated he wants to stay on Merseyside, having been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Internazionale in the past.
But now his representative Manuel Garcia Quilon has claimed Benitez would give serious thought to a post in Serie A.
"Benitez is a coach who is ideally suited to Italy and the country's style of football," Quilon told calciomercato.com.
"He is one of the three best coaches in the world.
"If he gets an interesting offer from a club with a serious project, he will certainly consider it.
"Yes, in this case, he could even leave Liverpool.
"Benitez is a coach who prepares to a high degree. He works 24 hours a day and is able to prepare in a way few others in the world can.
"Just look at what he has won. He led Valencia to the title and Uefa Cup. Then, at Liverpool, he has won the Champions League, European Super Cup and FA Cup."</DIV></DIV></DIV>

I don't consider myself a tactical genous, but by God I could do better with the squad available, put Riise on left midfield, Carra left back, Agger centre half, Gerrard to the centre, Pennant out right, surely that'd do better than the usual tripe I WAS watching

<!- START SYNOPSIS ->Liverpool won't have enjoyed their first visit to the Emirates Stadium after goals from Flamini, Toure and Gallas condemned them to a 3-0 Premiership defeat at the hands of Arsenal on Sunday. <!- END SYNOPSIS ->
<!- START ->The Reds were undone by a trio of goals from a trio of unlikely scorers; and despite causing the Arsenal defence a number of nervy moments, they were unable to find the goal that would have further undermined the Gunners' ability to take all three points.
Momo Sissoko's injury meant that Rafa had to rethink his midfield plans for this clash and there was little surprise when he opted for Bolo Zenden to replace him after the Dutchman had put in a good performance at Birmingham on Wednesday.
Zenden started the game in the centre of midfield with Xabi Alonso, but both were powerless as Robin Van Persie threatened to give Arsenal a second minute lead when he raced clear. The Reds were saved though when the sharp eye of referee Mark Clattenburg spotted that Van Persie had used a hand to get the ball passed Reina before slotting into an empty net.
Liverpool thought they had taken the lead themselves in the 14th minute when the best move of the match ended with Crouch putting the ball into the net from six yards. But their celebrations were cut short when Crouch was adjudged to have been offside when converting Alonso's cross.
They came close again in the 28th minute when a clever free kick routine gave Zenden a chance that he was only inches away from converting. But as they looked to have reached half time with their goal in tact, they were hit by an Arsenal sucker punch in the 41st minute when Flamini gave the home side the lead from close range. Again there were suspicions of offside, but there was no flag this time and the Reds were behind.
Liverpool came out for the second half and took the game to Arsenal, but their hopes of a comeback took a fatal blow in the 56th minute when Kolo Toure collected Van Persie's through pass and scored low under Reina to make it 2-0 to Arsenal.
Rafa's side almost found an immediate way back in the 58th minute when Zenden headed over when well placed; and Steven Gerrard's 66th minute gave Almunia a nervous moment. But William Gallas put the result beyond doubt when heading Arsenal into a 3-0 lead from Van Persie's 80th minute corner.
Only a fine stop from Pepe Reina stopped Adebayor making it 4-0 for Arsenal in the closing moments; and the Reds were deprived of a consolation goal when Craig Bellamy's strike was ruled out for offside when he looked onside</TD></TR></T></TABLE>

sack Rafa?
If Liverpool have any ambitions of winning the league within the next 4 or 5 seasons then he should go now. He's a super Champion's League manager, probably the best in the Premiership, but he's clueless when it comes to league matches. Rotation to that degree does not work, which has been proven over and over again, but he hasn't copped on.

the season has 2/3s to go, we are 14 points behind the Scum, 11 behind Chelsea. Winning the Champions' League and the FA Cup has bought Rafra a lot of time, and deservedly so, but the title remains the holy grail on Merseyside, I think his time is up. He's acting like a clown with some of his decisions away from home, and some really mediocre buys. FFS we're going to struggle to make the CL next year, not good enough for a club like LFC.

Three backs scored against us on Sunday. Warning bells Rafa. Gerrard is playing on the right - why? To accomadate all the great "buys" who can't play out of position? We have no way of playiong at all. United have, Chelsea have, Arsenal have. We just turn up and arse around the pitch for 90 minutes and hope for the best. After making 283 appearances during a glorious career with the Reds, Hamann is eagerly anticipating tomorrow's game and the chance to meet up with many old friends.
"It will be emotional," he admitted. "I went to the Galatasaray match earlier this season when I said hello to a few people, but that's the only time I've been back.
"A part of me feels like I still belong there. I was there a long time and had some wonderful memories. Part of me is still Liverpool and I hope I get a nice reception.
"I'm surprised at how they've started, because I really thought they would be genuine title contenders this season.
"I didn't think they'd be so many points behind the top two, which is really down to their away record - although they have had their five or six toughest away trips already.
"But I still think they will finish top three. We put together a run of nine or 10 wins last season and they are capable of doing it again."
Hamann accepts it'll be tough for City to get the result they desire, especially with the Liverpool captain back in top form.
"If Stevie's on his game he's hard to stop," he added. "His pace, his passing, his shooting - he can take any defence apart. We have to defend as a team and help each other out, because if you let yourself get one against one with him you're in trouble.

<TD =med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2><!- START ->In a game filled with disappointing play, Gerrard provided the one moment of class on 67 minutes as he rifled a low shot past Nicky Weaver to hand Liverpool their sixth home win from seven games.
City's away form has been dire and defeat at Anfield was their sixth on the road and leaves them too close to the relegation places for Stuart Pearce's liking.
The visitors should have been punished at Anfield inside ten minutes. Richard Dunne misjudged a hopeful long ball, allowing Dirk Kuyt (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/kuyt/) to lay the ball into the path of Peter Crouch (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/crouch/) but the gangly front-man looked a striker low on confidence as he dallied before scooping his effort over the bar.
The game was slow to ignite, but Gerrard raised the decibel level on 19 minutes when firing just wide from 25 yards following a sloppy pass from Dunne.
City's first foray forward came on 21 minutes as Hatem Trabelsi galloped onto a clever pass from Claudio Reyna, but he only succeeded in slicing his effort wide of goal.
The visitors appeared to take some confidence from their first noteworthy attack as Bernardo Corradi worked some space in the box only to shoot wide.
The clearest chance of first half fell to Luis Garcia (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/garcia/), but he contrived to drag his shot into the side netting after being found superbly by a raking ball from Sami Hyypia (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/hyypia/).
Liverpool exerted some early pressure on the City goal after the break with a series of corners, but they failed to take advantage and the game reverted to type - with the play littered with misplaced passes and sloppy control.
City emerged from their slumber on the hour as a lofted ball down the middle from Ben Thatcher caused panic in the Liverpool box. Darius Vassell and Micah Richards failed to get the ball down, but Corradi was able to get his shot away and he went close from the edge of the box.
Joey Barton was left aghast moments later as his driving run towards the Liverpool area was halted by a cynical trip from <A class=red href="http:/

Still think they stunk the place up. Apart from the Kuyt goal, the others all came from mistakes by a woeful Wigan defence.
Is it me or is Craig Bellamy the most instantly dislikeable player......ever?

It certainly is a hell of a draw, by miles the game of the round. Don't think either team were too happy when they saw that selection though, particularly when you consider who we could have got, i'll be in the pub for it anywaysmileys/biggrin.gif

DIC, the investment arm of Dubai's government, is thought to be nearing a buy-out of the club worth £450m.
"Liverpool's investment requirements are well publicised," said DIC chief executive Sameer al-Ansari, whose firm has begun to examine the club accounts.
"We hope we can agree a deal that will provide us with the opportunity to fund its needs both on and off the pitch." <!- E SF ->
The proposed deal is expected to include £200m to build a new 60,000-capacity stadium.
The due diligence process has begun, giving DIC exclusive rights to study the accounts of Liverpool with a view to finalising a deal.
<!- S ILIN ->
<DIV =arr>Liverpool chairman David Moores and chief executive Rick Parry stayed behind in Liverpool while the team flew to Istanbul for Tuesday's Champions League match against Galatasaray. </DIV>
However, the deal is not expected to be concluded until the new year.
DIC owns the Madame Tussauds Group and the Travelodge hotel chain as well as one third of the London Eye.
The company is an investment arm of Dubai Holding, which is owned by Dubai Crown Prince and United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Mohammed, whose family is internationally renowned for its running of the Godolphin horse racing stables, is the world's fifth richest man.
Liverpool have been linked with other takeover bids in recent years.
In 2005, American billionaire Robert Kraft - owner of the New England Patriots NFL team - was linked with a bid for the club.
And in 2004 Thaksin Shinawatra, then Prime Minister of Thailand, made a high-profile bid to take control of the club.
The takeover news will concern those worried about the number of Premiership clubs currently in the hands of foreign owners.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Aston Villa have all gone through high-profile takeovers by foreign owners in recent years. </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

With this in mind, Gerrard has called on The Reds to give their full attention to their cup quests - starting with the trip to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
"Because of the disappointing start we have had in the Premiership, if we're realistic we have got to try even harder in the cups now," the midfielder declared.
"The Champions League would be a big consolation.
"I want to win the Champions League again. The team want to do it again," said Gerrard, who inspired Liverpool to victory in the 2005 final.
"It's easy to live off the memory of that success two seasons ago - to milk it and keep thinking about it.
"But if you dwell on what you have achieved that's when you lose your hunger.
"It would be a terrific achievement, not just for me, but the whole squad, to become European champions again.
"We have had a taste of it before, so it gives you that extra incentive in these Champions League games to try to progress." </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

Reds boss Rafael Benitez takes time out to talk to liverpoolfc.tv about Barcelona.
<!- END SYNOPSIS -></TD></TR>
<TR>
<TD vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2 ="med"><!- START ->First of all Rafa, give us your reaction to the Champions League draw?
We know it's a very difficult game. People talk about Barcelona as one of the best teams in the world right now. They're playing in Japan now and they've just won 4-0. But my idea is that we're not playing against them now, we're playing against them in two months. We'll see what happens in the next two months.
Will the prospect of playing the holders frighten your players?
I think they will be excited. We won the Champions League playing against Juventus, Leverkusen, AC Milan and Chelsea, so we have experience of playing these types of games. They will be happy to be playing in the Nou Camp and to bring Barca back here to Anfield.
As a Spaniard, what does a fixture with Barcelona mean to you?
The top games in Spain are Real Madrid v Barcelona and, in the last six or seven years, Barcelona v Valencia. To play against Barcelona is the most important game there. But for me, it's another game. I like to win against all the teams, especially those with good players because then you show your team is good enough. It's not special for me to beat Barcelona because I'm Spanish, I just think about winning because it's the Champions League and I want to win every game.
Is this the toughest draw you could have got, given you won your group?
It could be the most difficult draw but Benfica was the easiest draw last season – and we couldn't get through. All the players and the supporters will be really, really focussed this year. The positive news is we don't have anything to lose because Barcelona are favourites.
How much Spanish football do you get to watch these days?
I watch some games. I like to see different competitions. It's easy for us to watch Barcelona games and we are watching them.
Will your Spanish players be particularly motivated, because all of Spain will be watching?
I think the English players will be just as motivated because Barcelona are a very good team. They played Arsenal in the final last year so all the English fans know Ronaldinho, Messi, Eto, Giuly and all these good players. </TD></TR></T></T></TABLE>

Investors deny Reds sale
The investment company behind the proposed takeover of Liverpool have claimed there is no way they would plan the sale of an asset they do not yet own.
Dubai International Capital felt the need to respond to a newspaper report on Wednesday which suggested they hope to sell the club in 2014.
But a DIC source said on Wednesday nightthey would view the takeover as more than just a business deal and promised manager Rafael Benitez cash to rebuild the Reds squad.
"What DIC is doing is planning to make sure that, if a deal is done, Liverpool has the best possible funding in place going forward under DIC stewardship," they said.
"This is particularly important as we would need to get on with the stadium early in 2007 and it takes time to sort out the necessary financing.
"This is also important in terms of making sure cash is available for the ongoing strengthening of the playing squad.
"Should DIC acquire the club, Liverpool will be well run, both on and off the pitch, and we are currently laying the groundwork to ensure that will be the case."
DIC officials have pointed out they are yet to successfully conclude their takeover of the club and that talk of plans to sell it off for profit are premature.
"DIC has not yet formally made an offer, never mind completed a deal. Certainly there are no plans to exit an acquisition we have not even bought yet," the source added.
"It (DIC) is a very serious investor with considerable resources at its disposal and the ability to take a long-term view.
"Equally, we believe that we understand the responsibilities that come with owning Liverpool Football Club.
"DIC has made it clear that, should a deal be concluded, it would not interfere in the day-to-day running of the club."

There was anger and disappointment in the red half of Merseyside when Liverpool’s comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul &mdash; trailing 3-0, they won on penalties &mdash; did not prompt official recognition, unlike England’s Ashes-winning cricket team. Rick Parry, the club’s chief executive, complained publicly, a campaign endorsed by The Times.
That wrong has now been rectified. “I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to receive this recognition for playing a game I’ve loved all my life,” Gerrard, 26, said. “I’d like to accept this on behalf of all those people who have been so supportive to me throughout my career, all my team-mates over the years, everyone at Liverpool Football Club, everyone at Team England, all my family and friends and all those coaches who have helped me since I was 8.”
Rafael Benítez, Gerrard’s club manager, believed the honour would inspire the midfield player to stay at the peak of his game. “It is a boost for Steven to get this award,” he said. “I hope it will help him to remain at a high level. He’s a good worker, a very good team-mate. We are all very proud.”</TD></TR></T></TABLE>

The Reds skipper, awarded an MBE in the New Year, beat Arsenal's Thierry Henry into second place.
The top five most wanted were: Steven Gerrard (35 per cent); Thierry Henry (30); Ronaldinho (24); Wayne Rooney (23); Frank Lampard (21).
The research also revealed that the most highly-prized manager was Martin O'Neill of Aston Villa (18 per cent), with the Ulsterman beating his more illustrious rivals Sir Alex Ferguson (16), Jose Mourinho (11) and Arsene Wenger (10). </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

ROSICKY DOUBLE ROCKS REDS
Goals in the 37th and 45th minutes from Tomas Rosicky have given Arsenal a 2-0 half time lead over Liverpool in today's FA Cup Third Round clash at Anfield. <!- END SYNOPSIS -></TD></TR>
<TR>
<TD =med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2><!- START ->The Reds grip on the trophy is slipping after Rosicky scored brilliantly from 18 yards in the 37th minute and then repeated the trick on the stroke of half time. But they were goals slightly against the run of play because Liverpool had run the show until his first.
The start of this game was significant more for the moving tribute to those Liverpool fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989 than the action on the field. But it was Liverpool who offered the first attempt on goal when Gerrard's 12th minute shot went well wide.
The Reds were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the 24th minute when Gilberto appeared to foul Alonso in the penalty area, but referee Steve Bennett booked Alonso for diving while television replays looked to confirm the Arsenal man's mistake.
Liverpool's control on the game grew as it wore on and Xabi Alonso (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/alonso/) had Almunia worried with a volley that flashed just wide. But they will have it all to do in the second half after Rosicky rocked them by giving Arsenal a handsome lead.

Afraid it didn't get any better from half time report above. And of all the f**kers to score their third. He obviously hasn't heard the rumours linking him with a transfer to the reds! Very badly dealt with by carra as well.
How did rafa look at garcia for the full 90 mins and leave bellamy sitting on the bench??? All he ever seems to do is carelessly give the ball away and then follow it up with a sneaky little trip or a pull. His sporadic moments of genius/luck seem to be far outweighed by the amount of possession he costs the team. And as for the alternatives in aurelio and gonzalez - don't even get me started on those two.
A night of dealing with gloating gooners and man ure fans awaits. Is it ever worth it?smileys/sad.gif

What was that whole "the truth" thing about?
It's to do with an article headlined "The Truth"in the sun newspaper following hillsborough about how liverpool fans picked the pockets of and urinated ondead fansin the leppings end in hillsborough. The sun had to row back and apologise a few days later but the then-editor kelvin mckenzie has lately said that he only apologised because ruport murdoch, the owner of the sun, told him to do so and that he wasn't sorry at all. Obviously that didn't go down too well in liverpool where most shops don't even sell that paper.
I was on the kop a few years ago for liverpool vs fulham a couple of days after the hillsborough anniversary and the fans take it very seriously(not surprisingly). I remember kewell and smicer getting dogs abuse over taking off their black armbands in the middle of the match.

Hello Kopites. As a Gooner I should be gloating but honestly I can't be bothered. Liverpool are going from bad to worse. Pennant is useless/ Crouch is hit and miss/Finnan is too safe and predictable. Only Carragher is worthy of the jersey IMO. God be with the days Grobellar would roll the bell to Stevie Nicol, he'd play a one two with McMahon and then thread a great ball to Beardsley. Beardsley would skin two men, and feed Houghton. Houghton would do a little shimmy and feed Rush or whoever. The rest would be inevitable.
I grew up following George Graham's Arsenal, and had to watch Liverpool for the sexy soccer that Arsenal are now playing. Nowadays, I'd only watch Liverpool if they were playing Arsenal or were 3 nil down to AC Milan.
Anyway, I need some help. I'm looking for a DVD ofthe European Cup Finaldone by a Liverpool fan in Istanbul when you jammy lot stuffed AC on pens. It was available I think on the LFC website. Apparantly my brother is in the DVD loads of times when they are recording at the stadium during the match. Its not the official LFC version, its called "Istanbul, the Movie" or something similar. If anybody can help me it would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I think they stock it in WH Smiths and other newsagency chains in the city centre but a lot of the shops still won't sell it. As for Toxeth, i've only ever passed through the place but i'd say not a chance.
I read in sunday times as well today that that kelvin mckenzie fella now works for the bbc so that was another reason for the mosiac on the kop seeing as the bbc were televising the game.

expectations, Rafael Benitez opted to field a weakened starting XI.

Despite the Reds' weekend FA Cup exit, only Gerrard and
Jerzy Dudek survived from the team that lost 3-1 to Arsenal on
Saturday, and the selection proved key to the hosts' downfall, with Lee
Peltier and Gabriel Paletta in particular exposed in defence.

The hosts' cause was not helped by the fourth-minute
withdrawal of winger Mark Gonzalez, who sustained a serious shin injury
in an innocuous challenge on Theo Walcott.

He was terrible and hyppia beside him was no better. Aliadiere made fools of the 2 of em every time he got the ball. And this is the player who was a flop when sent on loan to celtic/wolves/west ham.
I'm loathe to criticise rafa after what he has achieved in the two and a half years he's been at LFC but last night he deserves the brunt of the blame (although his captain didn't do much to help on the field except for a cracking goal when the game was well over). After being soundly beaten on saturday he should have fielded a strong team which should have been able to see them through. Trophies however minor will keep the fans onside and this one was definitely there for the winning.
As for arsenal, hats off to them. Wenger has consistently been able to find gems of players where nobody with think to look and its frightening to think of what they will be capable if they keep continuing at this rate. I for one actually hope they keep using the same players and go on to win the competition.
Also i think last night was the first time anyone saw a left back called traore at anfield who was actually able to play football and didn't put the sh1ts up 40,000 people every time he put one foot in front of the other!
Harry
10th-January-2007, 11:04
watched that last night and it was a mess ofa match. Rafa out to take some of the blame for the dumb team he picked but in an odd way I enjoyed the game itself, I thought we'd win it at 5-3 but their next was a blatant offside, a killer blow. Haven't seen a better goal than Stevie G's at Anfield for years. It's only the Carling Cup, lets consolidate and go for 2nd place in the league and go all out for the Champions League. Reading Stevie G's Biography at the moment, very good read. Finished McGrath's last night, brilliant disturbing read. How he's alive I don't know.

Liverpool: Dudek, Peltier, Hyypia, Paletta, Warnock (Alonso ) Guthrie, Gerrard, Aurelio, Gonzalez (Luis Garcia 11), Fowler, Bellamy, Luis Garcia (Carragher 75).
Subs Not Used: Reina, Crouch
Players in bold are not up to LFC standard, thoughthe jury is out on most of the fringe players apart from Paletta who was out of his league last night, evenwhen playing the Arsenal reserves. Important to remember though that Rafa considers the youth system very important to the club and he's right.Harsh on Robbie but he's getting ona bit and some of his touches were bad lastnight. He's too slow as well. It's very difficult to see what Rafa is doing now with the team, Momo is coming back, Kuyt I like, Risse is not having a good season, Agger is going to need another season to fit in. Finnan does his job and that's all, Pennant is a not an international class winger, we need goals from him as well. I'd love to know what Rafa's plan is as. he's signed Daniele Padelli from Sampadoria apparently (Italy U21 goalie) for 6 mths. I'd like to see David Villa come to us, he's a class act.

Parry expects Reds takeover
Rick Parry is confident that Dubai Investment Capital's bid to take over Liverpool will go through.
The Premiership club have spent the past month in talks with the group regarding a reported £450million Anfield takeover.
Reds chief executive Parry confirmed the negotiations have been progressing satisfactorily and hopes a decision will be made shortly.
"A huge amount of work has been going on from both parts," Parry told Radio Five Live's Sportweek. "I imagine we'll have something concrete to say relatively soon on that.
"They are finalising all the legal work. They have been examining the books and satisfying themselves that everything is fine on that score.
"There is a lot of legal work to do and investigations going on into the funding of the new stadium, which is a very important project for us.
"It is a case of finalising the due diligence and pulling everything together, which we hope will be completed relatively quickly.
"It is looking positive and yes, I am confident."
Parry also believes that DIC are investing in Liverpool with a view to creating long-term success for the club.
He added: "They will certainly help take us to the next level. Their whole business model, with the new stadium at the centre, is based on success and that you have to invest to stay at the top.
"It's not going to be a rich man's plaything. It is not a quick fix. It is not about rushing out to buy players for success this season or next season. It is about securing a model for long-term success.
"It helps that most of the key people we have been dealing with are genuine Liverpool supporters, so they understand what we are about."

Liverpool have sent a letter to Fifa asking for special dispensation
to sign Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano on loan from West Ham.
</font>
Under Fifa regulations, Mascherano, 22, cannot play for
another club this season because he has already represented Corinthians
and West Ham. </font>
But Liverpool hope Mascherano will be allowed to complete a move to Anfield.
</font>
A Fifa spokesman told BBC Sport that the "player status department" was currently considering the matter.
<!- E SF ->
</font>
Mascherano arrived at Upton Park with international team-mate Carlos Tevez on 31 August.
</font>
But he has played only six minutes since the defeat at Tottenham on 22 October and is desperate to leave the club.
</font>
Under the world governing body's rules, a footballer
cannot play competitively for more than two different clubs between 1
July and 30 June the following year. </font>
The rule, article 5.3 of Fifa's Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players, was introduced in July 2005.

Before 20 minutes had gone, Liverpool's domination told again as Jermaine Pennant (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/pennant/)'s struck his first goal for the club and that proved enough for Rafa Benitez - as he claimed his first league victory over Jose Mourinho.
It was a rampant first half display from Liverpool that saw them set up victory as they totally over-ran a Chelsea side which looked completely disorganised without talismanic skipper John Terry in defence.
The main talking point before the game was Petr Cech's return and he was happy to claim a Steven Gerrard header after three minutes to get his first touch of a ball for over three months.
However, within a minute Cech's next task was to pick the ball out of the back of the net as Liverpool swept into the lead. A long ball flicked on by Peter Crouch (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/crouch/) fell for Kuyt, he knocked the ball past hapless make-shift centre-half Paulo Ferreira, before coolly side-footing a half-volley into the corner.
Chelsea just could not come to terms with Liverpool's attacking play and the home side should have been two-up just moments later. Xabi Alonso (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/alonso/)'s excellent ball into the box freed John Arne Riise (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/riise/) - but Cech was down wonderfully well to make the save.
Chelsea's first meaningful chance came for Didier Drogba from a corner but he headed wide - and within minutes they found themselves further behind.
A long ball from Gerrard was headed clear by Michael Essien, the ball fell for Pennant - but with Ashley Cole backing off and inviting a shot, the former Birmingham man accepted the invitation and unleashed a brilliant effort into the top corner leaving Cech helpless.
Shaun Wright-Phillips was soon introduced for the injured Arjen Robben and that resulted in some meaningful Chelsea possession - but Jose Reina remained untested up to half-time.
Liverpool should have had the game well and truly sewn up by the hour mark and it was Crouch the guilty party for missing two great chances.
Pennant, having one of his best games for the club, was the creator for the first opportunity as he whipped in a cross from the right and found Crouch unmarked 12 yards out but he disappointingly headed tamely at Cech.

Juventus appear to be planning for life back in Serie A, as they have confirmed they would like to bring Liverpool star Steven Gerrard to Turin.
The Old Lady of Italian football are on course to bounce back to the top flight in Italy at the first time of asking, following their relegation for match-fixing, and it would appear they want to build a side capable of mounting an assault on the title.
The likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Pavel Nedved and Alessandro Del Piero opted to stay with Juve in Serie B, on the proviso that they built a great team for the following season.
Juve would appear to be trying to make good on their pledge as midfield star Gerrard appears on their list of targets.
"Gerrard is a great player and has been a dream for us for some time," Juve director of sport Alessio Secco is quoted as saying in the News of the World.
Gerrard has persistently been linked with a move away from Anfield and it could well be another summer of speculation surrounding the Reds talisman.

Steven Gerrard has urged Liverpool not to get carried away by talk of a push for the title.
The Reds have won eight of their last nine outings in the Premiership and Saturday's excellent victory over Chelsea moved them to within 11 points of Manchester United.
The Red Devils can stretch that advantage to 14 points with victory over Arsenal on Sunday and Gerrard feels it is too early to be talking about pushing for the title.
"It's a massive result, but we still have a lot of work to do," said Gerrard.
"Any result at home is a good one for us but against the champions it's extra special.
"It's a big result for us, but we're still third and we still have a lot to do. All we can do is make sure we do the same things again in the next match.
"The gap is still massive but all we can do is concentrate on ourselves and hope for more slip-ups ahead of us."

<TD =med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2><!- START ->Five years ago this week Benítez responded to successive defeats by calling an impromptu press conference at the Mestalla. Valencia had just lost at home to Valladolid to leave them nine points off the leaders, Real Madrid, with disaffection sweeping through the stands and the boardroom. And yet Benítez insisted his side could still claim their first Primera Division title in 31 years, with the subsequent 17 matches yielding a staggering 13 wins and a single defeat.
By the time Real Betis were overcome on the final afternoon, Valencia had built a seven-point lead at the top and Benitez's reputation was established. The Spaniard, his side trailing United by 11 points with 14 games to play, is now hoping he can instigate a similar late-season charge with Liverpool in the Premiership.
"You have to be calm and quiet about your targets," he said, adopting a more subdued approach to five years ago following Saturday's 2-0 victory over Chelsea. "We're five points behind and it's a long race, but we're in form and we can try and get even closer now.
"We've shown, by beating Chelsea in the manner we did, that we are a very good team. We have a better squad than before, and we can beat anyone. We'd done it in the cups in the past, but now we've done it in the Premier League. Can we do what we did at Valencia? I'll tell you in three or four weeks, but if we maintain this form, we'll be a lot closer to Manchester United as well as to Chelsea."
In Liverpool's favour is the fact that they must still welcome United to Anfield, where they are unbeaten in the league since October 2005, with Arsenal also due on Merseyside before the end of the campaign. Liverpool have won eight of their past nine league games and, with 46 points, have a one more than they did at this stage last season.
Certain members of Benítez's playing staff are still urging caution, but there was clear satisfaction in having finally triumphed in the Premiership against the champions. "We had a good weekend, but there's no point putting any pressure on ourselves," said Jamie Carragher (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/carragher/).
"We've got to just focus on winning as many games as we can and keep the pressure on the top two. The target now is to catch Chelsea. That's what Saturday's result has done for us. We've given ourselves a chance."

But chief executive Rick Parry hit back today.
"I don't know who was on the other end of the telephone talking to Rafa when I was sat next to him, but I'm quite sure it was Lucas Neill," he declared.
Neill joined West Ham for a salary almost double what he had been offered by Liverpool.
But he claimed today his decision was not based on money.
"It was the most difficult decision of my career. I followed Liverpool as a boy. I had posters of Graeme Souness, Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish on my bedroom walls.
"But I didn't get the opportunity to speak to the real people that count at Liverpool," he claimed.
"It would have been nice to hear the manager of Liverpool's thoughts, but because they never got that far in the negotiations, it didn't happen.
"He possibly could have talked me into it. But I was getting a small, cold feeling from Liverpool and a volcanic heat feeling from West Ham. My decision was based on football."
The Reds, however, insist they spoke to Neill at length, after targeting him in the previous transfer window.
Ironically, Neill could make his Hammers debut against Liverpool next week, when the Reds go to Upton Park on Tuesday.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is confident Javier Mascherano will be allowed to join the club.
The Reds are looking to sign Mascherano on loan from West Ham despite the fact the Argentine has already played for two clubs in the past 12 months.
Fifa rules permit any player turning out for more than two clubs over a one-year period between 1st July and 30th June the following year, but Liverpool have asked Fifa for special dispensation to allow the move to happen.
Liverpool have agreed a deal with West Ham and have held talks with the player about a move to West Ham.
Benitez remains hopeful that Fifa will agree to let the defensive midfielder join Liverpool even after the transfer window closes on Wednesday.
"We are waiting for Fifa to make a decision, but even if that does not come before the deadline, I believe he will still be able to join us," said Benitez.
"I hope he will join us, he has great experience.
"We know the rule says he cannot play for three clubs, but he is unable to play at West Ham and we must take into consideration the law, and the law is more important than the rules.
"He is unable to work at the moment, nobody can say you cannot work."
Benitez has held a long-term interest in Mascherano and he believes he would be a good addition to his squad.
"We were aware of the player when he was at River Plate, he was in the national team at 18," said Benitez."There is no doubt about the quality of the player.
"He played well in the World Cup and he is a great professional with talent and quality.
"We have good midfielders in Alonso, Gerrard, Sissoko and Zenden, but the only holding midfielder is Alonso and the idea is to bring Mascherano here to put pressure on in that role.
"If we sign him it will be on loan for one and a half years, at least. He is a good option and has the character and ability to do well in the Premiership.
"We have an agreement, but we must wait for the Fifa decision. We hope that will come in the next two days, but if it does not we still believe we will be able to sign him.
"We are doing our best as a club to sort this out. Fifa need to do something before January 31. But if they do not, I still feel we can achieve what we want.
"We talked to West Ham and had permission to talk to Mascherano, that says that he is not likely to play for them again.
"They used Tevez because they needed strikers, but they had other midfield players with different styles, that made it difficult."
Liverpool face Mascherano's West Ham on Tuesday night and Benitez is expecting a tough test
"West Ham players should be more motivated with a new manager," added Benitez.
"When a team changes a manager, they normally win the first game because everyone wants to impress, then the situation can return to what it was like before.
"We need to win the game before talking about the future and how far we are behind Chelsea.
"We know how important this game is and if we can beat Everton as well it will be six points, and that could make a big difference.
"This stage of the season is very important for us. We have difficult games with Manchester United and Arsenal still to come here, but if we can win some games in a row now it will make us closer to the top as the

Liverpool have clinched a deal for Spanish defender Alvaro Arbeloa, according to Deportivo la Coruna boss Joaquin Caparros.
Reports in Spain claim that The Reds are ready to pay €4million (£2.64million) for the former Real Madrid full-back who only moved to Depor at the start of the current season.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez has always been keen to reinforce at right-back as Steve Finnan's position is largely unchallenged at Anfield at present.
The former Valencia boss has held a long-term interest in Sevilla star Daniel Alves, but Arbeloa now looks set to make the move from the Primera Liga before the close of the transfer window on Wednesday night.
Caparros has admitted that the Spanish club have sanctioned the sale of the player who cost €1.3million (£860,000) from Real in the summer.
"It's a good option for the club [Deportivo] and I'm sure they'll sell him for more than they bought him for five months ago," Caparros told a news conference.
Liverpool are also close to tying up a deal for Malaga starlet Francis Duran (http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=444934&CPID=8&clid=14&lid=2&title=R eds+recruit+Spanish+starlet&channel=football_home& )as they continue to exploit Benitez's nous in the Spanish transfer market. <BR clear=all>

smileys/mad.gifthere's no reason we can't win this league we have Arsenal and United at home to come, potential 6 points, we've a very good run in as well. If united and Chelsea draw that would be good when they play
its still all to play for! smileys/biggrin.gif

I'd love to share your optimism harry but i think we'll be left to rue a slow start for the 2nd season in a row. We've left ourself with too much to do even taking into account the visits of man ure and arsenal to anfield.
Good to keep the run going tonight even if hanging on a bit at the end. Roll on the other shower of c**ts on saturday!!

<TD =med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2><!- START ->Liverpool are now just two points behind Chelsea and eight behind leaders Manchester United after second half strikes from Dirk Kuyt (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/kuyt/) and Peter Crouch (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/crouch/) gave Rafael Benitez's side another away-day success.
The top two have a chance to restore their advantage when they play on Wednesday night, but Gerrard is pleased the Reds have played their part in maintaining their winning streak.
"It's a great three points for us," he said. "It means the run has continued and now we need to keep it going until the end of the season.
"It was a bit nervy when they scored at the end. We were 2-0 up but couldn't get the third goal and we were inviting them onto us. The boys did well though and this is a good win."
The game was won in the second period when all the goals were scored, but one of the highlights of a low key first half was an unfortunate stumble by the Liverpool boss on the touchline as he tried to control the ball.
"The boss is always telling the back four to stay on their feet," joked Gerrard. "So maybe he'll have to let them off the next time they don't!" </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

Dubai International Capital has ended its interest in taking over Liverpool.
</font>
The announcement follows the failure of the club's board
to formally accept DIC's bid in the wake of a second offer from
American George Gillett.
</font>
DIC claimed the offer had been accepted in principle by
majority shareholder David Moores but they were unable to make a formal
offer to shareholders.
</font>
Chief executive Sameer Al Ansari said the DIC group was disappointed but added: "We won't overpay for assets."
<!- E SF ->
</font>
DIC had been their most likely suitor and entered into
discussions with the club late last year with Sheikh Mohammed the
central figure in the investment arm of Dubai's government.
</font>
The deal would have valued the club at £450m but the
Dubai group have decided to withdraw following the board's decision to
allow more time to consider the Gillett bid.

That offer would give shareholders more for their
holdings and Moores, who owns 51.6% of the club, would get £8m more
from the Gillett deal.
</font>
Gillett has already carried out due diligence - the
process of investigation by potential investors -so the way is now open
for him to make his offer for the club.
</font>
Sameer Al Ansari added: "We are very disappointed to be
making this announcement. DIC are a serious investor with considerable
resources at our disposal.
</font>
"At the same time, we are supporters of the game and of
the club. Liverpool's investment requirements have been well publicised
and, after a huge amount of work, we proposed a deal that would provide
the club with the funds it needs, both on and off the pitch.
</font>
"We were also prepared to offer shareholders a significant premium on the market price of the shares.
</font>
"As businessmen, we move on. As fans, we hope that the
new owners would share the same vision as we had for LFC and, of
course, in realising the new stadium that is so badly needed to ensure
the club can continue to compete at the highest level in the
Premiership and Europe."

But he felt compelled to consider the rival bid. The DIC response to this was to give the club 12 hours to make a decision, but the chairman was not prepared to have Liverpool Football Club bullied like that.

Benitez hopes for swift end
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez wants a swift conclusion to the takeover speculation surrounding the club.
American duo Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jnr are closing on a £450million deal for the club and are expected on Merseyside next week for further talks.
The pair's interest came in the wake of a failed bid from Dubai International Capital and there is even talk that a formal announcement could be made to the Stock Exchange next week.
The move will then have to be ratified by an AnfieldEGM but Benitez is pleased that an end appears in sight.
"If it is sorted out next week, then that will be better because we can start talking about the game and the players rather than other things," said Benitez.

The american takeover has also been said to mean that LFC will be able to buildits own ground and that there is no chance of a groundshare with everton. That's all good by me cos them fcukers have been trying to hijack our plans since the start. I'm not sure if DIC were looking along those lines but if they were then it was certainly time to tell them where to go.
As for moores holding out for more money, this guy comes from one of the richest families in UK so IMO the reported extra 8m is hardly going to be top of his agenda.

Parry explains bid U-turn
Rick Parry insists the Liverpool board did not make a mistake in originally focusing on Dubai Investment Capital's bid for the club.
DIC pulled out of negotiations with the Premiership side last week, paving the way for George Gillett Jnr and Tom Hicks to come in with a successful offer.
Reds chief executive Parry, who will keep his role under the new regime, explained that, at the time of the original decision, the DIC offer was best suited to Liverpool's interests.
"When we go back to last November, it was a very finely balanced decision when we went with DIC," said Parry in a press conference live on Sky Sports News.
"(Chairman) David (Moores) had a lot of soul searching. We had two great bids on the table and at that stage, as George will no doubt tell you, I had to tell him that he'd been unsuccessful.
"He was very, very gracious in defeat. He wished us good luck, but was at pains to ask where he'd gone wrong and where the shortcomings were.
"To his credit, he kept his own counsel, but didn't go away. He was persistent, dogged and determined.
"Clearly things with DIC took longer than we expected and we thought we would have things wrapped up before Christmas, but it was taking significantly longer than that.
"As we got well into January, so George started to come back again. I wouldn't say we welcomed him with open arms at first, but he wouldn't go away.
"The thing that made a difference is he came back with a very different proposition because he brought Tom on board. No disrespect to George, but that changed the complexion of the bid.
"If George and Tom had been sitting down in November, maybe the decision would have gone that way then.
"I've no doubt that we've made the right decision."

I would like to officially end my silence on an issue that could very well decide the futureof Liverpool FC in the medium to long term. I would initially like you all to notethat I have in fact taken the moral high ground with regard to the recent takeover of LFC by those pair of Yank investors.
I currently sit atop the aforementioned highground dueto what happenedon this site following the 12th of May 2005, a dark day in the history of Manchester United, namely, the acquisition ofa controlling stake in the PLC by Malcolm Glazer, American Tycoon. The response of the scouse majority on an issue which has resulted in United being placed under a debt that no normal Limited company couldeasily cope with, was cynical, cutting and deeply hurtful. Frankly I considered having most of you banned, but I felt that would have been the cowards way out.So I moved on...
Suddenly (!)came the recent news that following David Moores squeezing every last penny out of a club that has been in his family since the latter half of last century, two fat lads from across the water had taken over.
I'm sure you won't be at all surprised that my first instinct was to log on and rub your collective noses in this, due mainly to the fact that it was clearly a case of the tables having turned of biblical proportions. God knows that you all deserved it. But no, thought I, here's a chance to get my own back in a way that will prove much more gratifying in the long run.
*cough*
Good Luck.
Yours Sincerely
Jenta (That's me on the horse there)

And now a piece from the always excellent Steven Kelly on the takeover.

@@@@SPAN =article>
When the Dubai takeover was first announced, I said it would be a bonanza for rubberneckers and we haven’t been disappointed! There’s blood everywhere.
We were resigned to seeing our club’s soul hawked hither and yon a long time ago, yet they couldn’t do it with even a shred of decorum.
Little else was expected of Dumb & Dumber to be honest. DIC may think they had the fans onside by insisting Parry and Moores would remain in place, but it was the most disheartening aspect of the deal to many.
One can only hope they’ve raised enough for their worm farm and get the hell out of Anfield. The 21st century beckons, albeit seven years too late.
It depends on which “insider” you listen to, I suppose. DIC’s statement Moores suffered “a mental aberration” may sound inflammatory, but it’s being hinted that was an understatement.
There were also accusations of bad business etiquette, hardly a shock for those who have observed the Reds up close. Dubai seemed understandably unnerved that having courted Moores for months, they should walk him down the aisle only to catch him making goo-goo eyes at the priest.
Counterclaims have emerged that Dubai checked the books and simply could not find the required profit that would justify a £500-million layout. Not that they got the chance to put in a revised offer, which is why they jumped before they were pushed.
There were also hints of future interference in the transfer policy. The manager, for better or worse, has always held sway at Anfield and the idea of bringing in players without his sanction is anathema.
Shankly fought a bitter, protracted battle for managerial sovereignty, and Moores has never been involved despi

Far be it from me to defend Martin Edwards, but the fact that United are always held up as an example of selling out gets to me. Spurs were the first English club to float, years before United. It's just that United grabbed the oppurtunity far better than anyone else. United were in terrible trouble around the time of the Knighton's attempted takeoverbut what Edwards and his cronies did was to fully take advantage of having the greatest manager in the history of English football, playing an exciting brand of football, just when Sky waded in with the Premier League. Marketing genius I'd call it.

GERRARD BLOWN AWAY BY AMERICANS

<TD =med vAlign=center width=357>Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard claims he was "blown away" during his meeting with George Gillett and Tom Hicks. <!- END SYNOPSIS -></TD></TR>
<TR>
<TD =med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2><!- START ->The midfielder, who met the club's new owners along with Jamie Carragher (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/carragher/) last week, believes they can help take the Reds back to the top of English football.
"Those two guys blew me away in the 10 to 15 minutes I had with them," said Gerrard.
"They told myself and Jamie to tell the other players that they want to help us win a lot more trophies, they want to get the club back into the title race and they want to make Liverpool number one.
"I think it's often forgotten that Liverpool are the most successful club in the country. People have been a bit disrespectful to us in recent years when they have talked about the top three or four sides and we've not got a mention."
The Reds' skipper admits it "kills him" to see other teams leading the way in the Premiership – but believes the club could soon re-live the glory days of the 1970s and 1980s.
He said: "As a fan and a player, it kills me inside because I believe we still are the best club in the land, and with a little investment off the pitch and a bit of money spent on it, we can prove that.
"The most important thing for me is not the money these guys are bringing in or the prospect of a new stadium, but the fact that they have a winning mentality - that is what this club is all about.
"It's really hard to take, finishing fourth and fifth in the league, but the great thing about this takeover is that we already have a world-class manager in Rafa Benitez, so it's not as if absolutely everything needs doing.
"I don't think they are going to throw all kinds of money about for players. We just need a little bit of fine tuning.
"The first presents I got off my dad as a kid were videos of Liverpool winning the league. Year in, year out, the likes of Dalglish, Souness, Barnes, Beardsley, Rush; I've seen them all winning leagues, league after league, so when the media and ex-players say we're miles off winning it, it hurts.
"I'd be sick if I never won it. By the time I finish, I will probably have 15 years under my belt and if I hung up my boots without winning the league once, I'd feel like a failure."
Gerrard also revealed he talked to Gillett and Hicks about the importance of recreating Anfield's famous atmosphere inside the new stadium.
"I've had some of the best nights of my career and my life at Anfield and there are an awful lot of things I'm going to miss.
"The Americans have promised to build us a top stadium but they are aware of the unique atmosphere at Anfield and will try to reproduce that because, when the Liverpool fans are behind you and you're kicking towards the Kop end, there's this feeling that you are always going to score.
"And that's what we want in the new stadium. We want it to be a really horrible place to come with lots of noise. We want to make it a fortress." </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

FUN sing-song turned into a vicious punch-up as Liverpool ace Craig Bellamy saw red and waded into team-mate John Arne Riise in a drunken rage.
The sensational bust-up erupted in the early hours of Friday at the team's Portuguese hotel after a marathon boozing session.
An eye witness says the feuding Premiership stars:
<LI>TRADED INSULTS during a bar's karaoke contest when Riise refused to take the stage,
<LI>SCREAMED ABUSE as they faced each other toe to toe,
<LI>TOTTERED back to their training camp base at 2am,
<LI>FOUGHT in a hotel as Bellamy lashed out at Riise's £5 million legs with a golf club, until the pair were
<LI>SEPARATED by head coach Rafael Benitez.
The outrage has massive implications for both players and the club, who have just been taken over by new American owners.
Tycoon co-chairmen George Gillett and Tom Hicks who invested £470 million were said to be furious that their name has been dragged through the mud just before a vital Champions League clash with Barcelona on Wednesday—their most important match this year.
Insiders have predicted it could spell the end of 27-year-old bad boy Bellamy's career at Anfield.
The astonishing incident kicked off at Monty's Restaurant and Bar in the upmarket Algarve Vale do Lobo resort where Welsh international Bellamy and Norwegian World Cup hero Riise, 25, were winding down with colleagues after five days' training in preparation for Wednesday.
An inside source revealed: "There had been a lot of drinking and everyone was enjoying themselves.
"But it all went wrong when Craig tried to drag John up for a song.
"There was a karaoke competition going on, but John's a quiet one off the pitch and wasn't having it at all.
"It started off as a bit of a lark with some of the other lads having a go but then it got completely out of hand. John went ballistic because Craig wouldn't take no for an answer. He was screaming at Craig to leave him alone, saying he wouldn't do it and yelling insults.
"Everyone was completely stunned by it because they were really having a go, standing there toe to toe swearing at each other. There were about 20 players in the bar including all the senior guys, like Steven Gerrard, Peter Crouch and Dirk Kuyt.
"They were warned to keep a lid on it and it appeared to calm down.
"It was really late, about 2am, and the players eventually started drifting off to bed. But Craig, who was sharing with Steve Finnan, was so wound up he couldn't sleep.
"He suddenly grabbed a golf club and went looking for John. And when he found him he waded in, hacking at his legs with the club.
"All hell was let loose and John suffered a lot of bruising. Craig was out of control and shouting that John had belittled him in front of the lads."
Eventually coach Benitez was called to separate the two stars. The boss was said to be horrified and called both players to an emergency summit after they sobered up.
Benitez had plenty to worry about. Unconfirmed reports in a local newspaper said one footballer had also been handcuffed after allegedly trying to headbutt a policeman.
And it was claimed other players smashed electrical equipment in the resort with their golf clubs.
Staff at the four-star Barringtons Centro Deportivo hotel were ordered to keep quiet about the disturbance.
"The players flew back to Britain on Friday and were trying to keep a lid on the shameful incident.
But our source said: "With Liverpool just about to play one of the most important matches in their history this is the last thing they need.
"The break was meant to be a bit of rest and recreation with light training to get the tea

<H2>LIVERPOOL PLAYER TOLD POLICEMAN THAT HE LOVED HIM</H2>
<DIV id=printsaveline>football365
</DIV>
<DIV id=article>@@@@SPAN id=intelliTXT>
<B nd="1">An eyewitness has revealed how a Liverpool player, believed to be goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, repeatedly told a policemen that he loved him after being threatened with arrest in Portugal last week.[/B]
Trouble flared on Thursday night after Pool manager Rafa Benitez agreed to let his squad enjoy an end-of-trip night out. Unfortunately, despite the best attempts of skipper Steven Gerrard to restore order, the police were called after a number of players, including Dudek, Jermaine Pennant and Robbie Fowler, became embroiled in a drunken row.
According to <I nd="4">The Times[/I], 'Trouble flared again when the party were escorted back to the Barringtons Club and Barringtons-Centro Desportivo hotel, and even though no one was charged or arrested, the noise was such that June and Peter Lover, a retired couple from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, were woken up at about 1.30am and watched in despair from their apartment as armed police, some from Portugal's riot squad, attempted to restore order.'
"There must have been at least five police vehicles and a dozen police under our window," Mrs Lover told the newspaper. "The noise was terrible and we simply couldn't sleep through it. At first it sounded like late-night revelry and we knew the Liverpool squad were downstairs. But then things seemed to get out of hand and the police arrived."
It was at this point that a player, believed to be Dudek, and described as having 'an Eastern European' by Mr Lover, was handcuffed for allegedly threatening to headbutt a policeman.
"He kept telling the police how much he loved them, as if he was pleading to be allowed to go free," Mr Lover said. "At one point, the police seemed to be slapping him around the face, trying to bring him round and sober him up because he was so drunk. He kept apologising over and over again but the police didn't want to know. It was only after a while that the police found someone from the Liverpool management, who managed to calm things down and talk quietly. Eventually, the police let the player go after some negotiations and he seemed very relieved indeed and kept thanking them."
Quite where Craig Bellamy was during this particular rumpus is unclear, although it is widely reported that the Wales forward then returned to the hotel to confront John Arne Riise with a golf club. However, it is now believed that Bellamy confronted Riise with the club rather than attacked him.
Nonetheless, The Times states that 'Bellamy will be the first casualty of a summer clear-out' at Anfield and the 'the Wales forward's latest brush with authority has effectively sealed his fate'. @@@@/SPAN></DIV>

Obviously not a lot. You'd think that the penny would eventually drop and he might realise how lucky he is to be at a big club in spite of all his previous fcuk-ups. Its a pity though cos when he's playing well he can cause opposition lots of problems and liverpool always look more dangerous when he's in the side.

</font><a href="http://football.guardian.co.uk/print/0,,329722142-103,00.html" target="_blank" target="_blank">
Guardian</font></a>The
awards season is upon us: Brits last week, Oscars this. And now our
very own Top Tosspot in football gong. Apologies to those who failed to
make the short list: they might have been nominated had the field not
been so fertile.</font>
First,
a trip down memory lane. Who could forget the colourful contributions
made by the following? Vinnie Jones, for squeezing the life out of
Gazza's knackers and biting a lump out of a tabloid hack's nose; Gazza
himself for services to drunkenness and domestic abuse; George Best for
much the same; Harald Schumacher for smacking France's Patrick
Battiston to Kingdom Come; Mark Bosnich for his Nazi salute and coke
binges; Duncan Ferguson for his four assault convictions; Stan
Collymore for punching Ulrika Jonsson; Eric Cantona for kung-fu kicking
a Crystal Palace fan; Roy Keane for deliberately crippling Alfe Inge
Haaland; Andoni Goicoechea ('The Butcher of Bilbao') for breaking Diego
Maradona's ankle with a psycho tackle, then framing the injurious boot
in a glass case in his living room. All have a place in football's hall
of gratuitous yobbery.</font>
Despite
their achievements, none of these distinguished louts makes the short
list. However grievous the damage they wreaked, they were "characters"
or traditional hard men rather than out-and-out tossers. At times one
could even pity the likes of Gazza and Collymore. They were human; they
could cry. There was a certain nobility in Cantona's attempt to combat
crowd xenophobia and even Ferguson partly redeemed himself by
assaulting a pair of burglars. Today he may be regarded more as a
populist vigilante than a thug.</font>
A
number of distinguished contemporary louts failed to make the short
list. Paolo Di Canio, still playing in Italy, earned himself a
magnificent 11-match ban for pushing over a referee. But he transcends
mere thuggery by embracing the political. He is not just a mindless
yob, he is a good old-fashioned fascist, with a touch of the circus
clown: witness his much-loved Mussolini salutes. Joey Barton was a
sure-fire contender with his history of eye poking, cigar burning and
bottom flashing but his recent assault on the banal Gerrard and Lampard
memoirs has revealed a hitherto unknown propensity for speaking sense.</font>
And
so to the lucky few. In reverse order ... a surprise entry at number
four is Lampard himself. His urbane exterior can blind one to the
qualities that saw him "romping" with Rio Ferdinand and Kieron Dyer,
asking two girls to perform a lesbian sex show. And do not forget his
drunken chunterings, alongside John Terry, in front of grieving
Americans the day after 9/11.</font>
Bang in at three is face-arranger extraordinaire Ben Thatcher.</font>
At
two is Lee Bowyer for being Lee Bowyer. He was fined £4,500 way back
for hurling chairs at two Asian workers in a McDonald's restaurant,
having said "I don't want to be served by no Paki"; former girlfriend
Emma Keeney alleged he dumped her after discovering she was half-Indian
and feared they might have a "brown baby"; and he had a punch-up with
his Newcastle team-mate Dyer mid-match.</font>

Decent result for LFC alright. But it was an average display by two average teams. I really can't see the Cup winner coming from this game, both teams were very poor; Barca's attacking was clueless and directionless, with Plug-features playing like a lost kid on the wrong team, while LFC players must have been on commission for passing the ball back to Barca players?
Chelski and MU will be happy with that result. Even if E'to returns, Barca are out, and LFC surely couldn't pull of another miracle of the likes of 2 years ago ... could they?

But Fowler says he'll play for as long as possible whether he earns a longer stay at Liverpool or not, and hasn't given up hope of securing another extension for the Reds.
"I know it's all a bit up in the air at the moment," said the striker.
"I've not spoken to anyone about the future and to be honest I'm still just focusing on enjoying every minute I'm at Liverpool.
"I'll sit down with people and think about next season when the time's right, but although I'm not the youngest player at the club, I'm not that old either. I still feel I've a few years left in me yet and I'll be carrying on for longer.
"Some people have mentioned moving into coaching and I even saw a move to the USA mentioned, but I honestly haven't even thought about anything like that yet.
"I still think I've a lot to contribute as a player and I'm just focused on playing as much as I can between now and the end of this season. There's a lot to play for."
Fowler was both player and provider in the comfortable 4-0 win, with his penalty tally for the Reds now an impressive 20 in 26 attempts.
"I wasn't aware of that record," he said. "I know I've missed some pens, but the key is always to make up your mind and stick to it."
He added: "Obviously it's not easy to come back into the team when you've not played for a while, and I think that showed in some parts of my game.
"I'd prefer to score goals from open play rather than penalties, but I'm not complaining. I'll take any opportunity which comes along to score.
"It was pleasing to play a part in the goal for Stevie at the end too. He'd made the penalties for me, so it was good to repay the compliment."
With Manchester United on the immediate horizon, there's nothing Fowler would love more than to inflict a title wound on the enemy.
Even the striker's presence on the bench would wind up the opposition, but he's realistic about his prospects of keeping his place.
"I'm not going to be kidding myself," he said.
"I wouldn't expect to be starting that game next weekend, but obviously to be involved in any way would be great.
"That's up to the manager, but I'm not under any illusions about the situation and know there are other players who'll come back."</TD></TR></T></TABLE>

"He's been training and you can see his quality. He gives the manager more options in midfield and I'm positive he'll become a great addition to the lads here already. I think he's got everything in his game to succeed here at Liverpool.
"He's quick over the ground, plays passes with intelligence and gets stuck into a tackle when he has to.

"The fact that Charlton have had a tough time and I have had a lot of work to do has given me the experience quicker. Making a few saves gave me the confidence early on in the season because I proved to myself I can play at this level," said the stopper.
"When I go back to Liverpool at the end of the season, which I think will happen, they will see a different person and a different player.

Carson admits he initially found life tough when he arrived on Merseyside in January 2005.
"I found it difficult when I first went to Liverpool. The lads tried to help me settle in but I found it all overwhelming.
"Being so young, you could say that I was out of my depth to begin with. I had played with world-class players at Leeds, but I wasn't training with them every day.

Why Bellamy was taken off I don't know, he was causing all sorts of problems, we're never going to win the league with the players of the caibre of Gonzalez in the Liverpool team. We're going to have a lot of money this summer, time to get the finger out. Gerrard and Xavi were poor today I thought. The only consolation for me is that Chelsea do not win the title now, Mourinho is gone now, this can only be good for everybody.

<TR>
<TD =med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2><!- START ->Despite leading 2-1 from the first leg, Gerrard knows the tie is far from over and is totally focussed on completing the job in front of the Kop on Tuesday.
"We know this tie's not over. We've got to go into the second leg with the attitude that it's nil-nil. We won't be going into it overconfident, showing off that we're 2-1 up. We know we need the same work ethic as we got before," says the Reds skipper ahead of the eagerly anticipated return.
He accepts, however, that victory in the Nou Camp a fortnight ago will have sent out an ominous warning to the rest of Europe.
"We proved two years ago that we can win this competition and on the Barcelona performance people will take note that we can go and do the same again.
"It's up there with the best, a fantastic result, though it's still not over. In the first 20 minutes to half an hour they showed what a good side they are. But we got our game plan spot on. People were expecting us to be camped on our 18-yard box, but the manager in his team talks told us to be positive.
"A lot of teams go there and play five at the back or five in midfield, but while showing Barcelona respect we went 4-4-2 and were confident we could get a result. We'd have took a draw before the game, but to get a win was a massive bonus.
"There was a great atmosphere in the dressing room before the game; we knew that we needed a team performance to get a result and that's what we got. People were looking for problems but didn't see any; you saw a solid team performance with players working hard for each other." </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

<TD =med vAlign=center width=357>Rafael Benitez is hoping Harry Kewell (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/kewell/) can join Liverpool's chase for end of season glory over the next couple of weeks. <!- END SYNOPSIS -></TD></TR>

<TD =med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2><!- START ->Kewell hasn't kicked a ball since picking up an injury at the World Cup but Benitez has revealed the Australian international is finally closing in on a first team comeback.
"Harry is getting closer all the time," said the manager. "He's had a long injury so we have to manage the situation properly, but he is almost ready.
"At the moment he can take part in parts of the training sessions, such as the warm-ups or when we work on passages of play, and he's probably ten days or so away from being able to take a full part.
"I would think he will be ready to play football for us within the next two to three weeks. If he is fit then of course we can use him. It will be good for us and for him."
Benitez has also revealed that Luis Garcia (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/garcia/) is recovering well from the knee injury which brought his season to a premature end.
"He is progressing and doing well," he said. "He just needs time. He was with us in Barcelona and the last time I met him he seemed really happy with the way things were going." </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

<TR>
<TD =med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2><!- START ->The skipper believes Rafa's passion for the game and attention to detail will ensure the Premiership trophy pays its first visit to the Anfield trophy room sooner rather than later.
"Benítez is a manager that eats, breathes, sleeps football. He is 24/7. He loves the game, he is always trying to improve himself and he's always trying to improve every player," said Gerrard when quizzed on the club's quest to win their first league title since 1990.
"I've got total belief and confidence he can continue to take us forward and bring success to this football club.
"It's come a long way since Istanbul. Rafa's made some clever signings to strengthen the squad but we know we can still get better.
"I think the future is looking bright for the football club. Rafa's gone on record saying that if there's a signing he thinks will strengthen the team, then he will probably make it.
"Since I've been in the team, we've been a fantastic cup side. The next challenge is to improve domestically, in the league, and try to get involved in the title race.
"It's a good challenge to have, an exciting one, and as I say, if Rafa strengthens us and keeps moving us forward, we will have a good go at it really soon."
Meanwhile, Gerrard also claims he and his teammates fear no one in Europe having knocked the holders out of the Champions League.
"I think the confidence and the lift it's given us, knocking out the champions, means we don't fear anyone now going forward," he said.
"We're a really difficult side to play against and we don't fear anyone over two legs.
"This team that Rafa's built never knows when it is beaten. If we're a goal down or a couple of goals down we never give in until the final whistle."
On his own form this season, the 26-year-old added: "It took me a while getting over the tiredness from the World Cup but I can feel my form coming back slowly." </TD></TR></T></TABLE>

VORONIN CONFIDENT HE CAN MAKE IMPACT

<TD =med vAlign=center width=357>Andriy Voronin has spoken of his desire to succeed in English football when he arrives at Melwood in the summer. <!- END SYNOPSIS -></TD></TR>
<TR>
<TD =med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2>
<!- START ->The Ukraine striker will sign from Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Voronin admits he'll be leaving Germany with a heavy heart but claims the time is right for a new challenge.
"I owe Germany my football education, my successful career, my call-up to the Ukraine squad," he said.
"But I had thought about changing leagues for quite a long time. I wanted a change of environment, to discover something new, so with my Leverkusen deal coming to an end my agent began to look for options in Italy, Spain or England.
"There were some interesting offers even before the 2006 World Cup but we decided not to hurry. When we started talking about Liverpool, who I could join on a free transfer, everything clicked into place.
"I have not been to Liverpool yet. I will be catching up with that at the end of the season when I intend to study English intensively."
The 27-year-old admits he has already studied the English game, however, and is confident he can make an impact in the Premiership.
"If you talk about the physical factor, self-commitment and the compactness of the game itself, then English football is very much like the German game, though there is less time to control the ball or decide what to do," he said.
"That means you have to think more quickly, play more of a one-touch game. But Liverpool are not a typical British team. I would say they have a Spanish accent which makes their football more diverse and less predictable.
"As for individuals being able to show their talents, just look at Cristiano Ronaldo. He has proved what you can achieve if you combine talent with hard work."
Hmmmmmmmmm we'll just have to wat and see smileys/confused.gif</TD></TR></T></TABLE>
