Do they also still have their Trattoria in Fanore ? Was in there during the summer with Wayen and my family. Quite nice, but breaks with the Holywell tradition of veggie pizza and pasta at very good prices. Still their mixed grill there was excellent, and the draught beer was very tasty too. Half size portions for kids no problem too.

Interesting list for Kerry. Maybe it's my poor taste in food but none of the places I regularly go are on the list, mind you most opf those on the list are worth a visit.

Just a note but rather than just mentioning a name, please complete the following
Place (e.g. County)
Name (of Restaurant)
Cuisine (Type thereof)
C/M/E (Cheap/Moderate/Expensive)
Recommend (what is the speciality or is particularly good)
Rate (1 to 5 e.g. 3, 3.5)
And also mention address e.g. Pembroke street, Dublin 2
I'd amend Point's listing on Roly's, Ballsbridge, Dublin
Agree with Point's analysis for Dinner, but for Lunch, same food, M expensive, rating 4 (would be 5 except for how they've messed up on the desserts recently)

was in a restaurant at the weekend near Bally David on the Dingle peninsula, was called O'Gormains. thought it was exceptional, nice setting also great views of the sea and cliffs.. Menu was quite traditional steaks etc, great seafood and good vegetarian options, had to try the Anascaul black pudding fo starters. good food cooked extremely well.

the above would get a 5 rating, but was rather expensive, well worth it though.

Dublin- Chez Max
Cuisine - French French French. With a bit of French. C
Recommend - basically this is as good as you'll get in rustic French food for half nathin'. I don't know how Max does it except to say that - you can get the dish of the day, big glass of wine and coffee for only €13. Specialities include pork with aligot (cheesy mash), steak, onion tart, great patisserie etc.
Rate (4 out of 5)
Address - just outside Dublin Castle (beside the Sick and Indigent Roomkeepers Society!)

If you had driven on another half mile or maybe even a mile you would have come to an even better one - have tried O'Gormans too. Looks like a bungalow and does B&B also. Can't remember the name from Adam, but the best value, food, ambience combo I have experienced possibly anywhere. Being a seafood lover I didnt try the steaks but there was a bunch of middle aged American women at the next table giving the steaks WOW reviews.
No. Please. Don't even go there.

Was in Limerick last Saturday. I stayed in the Clarion Suites. The rooms are huge and very comfortable. Had food in Dolans that night. Didn't think it was great to be honest. Will this ruffle a few feathers? Watched the All Blacks demolish France there and supped some good French chardonnay.

The Head Chef has gone to work for Richard Corrigan so I expect it might be a bit iffy for a short while.I ate there a few weeks and had a superb meal.

From the above list, I wouldn't really rate Scoozi's or The Speckled Door, in Cork. Their main selling point is location, one in the city centre and cheap, the other with good views out the back. Both give glorified pub grub, imo, that is no better than anywhere else.
The Emmett Hotel, Emmett Square,Clonakilty. Very good, moderately priced, general menu. 4+
Jimmy Edwards, Market Quay, Kinsale. Same as above, less pretentious than other places in Kinsale. 4+
Finin's, Main Street, Midleton. Same as above, wasn't there for a while though. 4+
The Farm Gate, Broderick Street, Midleton. Same as above. 4
Will add some more later on.

That might explain it Car 54. Mind you for a Saturday night it was quiet enough. I had hada few pints whilst watching the Irish match so maybe my taste buds were anaesthetised a bit.

When using Dublin Airport, we normally nip out to Kealy's Roadhouse just down the road for steaks. Good plain grub, decent fillet steaks for €20 or so. Good value, nathin fancy, and since I'm always with various sons, I've never been allowed to try the dessert menu.

Anyone have a good recommendation for Galway city centre? Would like something a bit on the nice side, w/o going totally OTT.
For those of you who know Cork, think Rossini's or Les Gourmandises, but not Jacob's or Hayfield Manor.
Merci!

I was there with Bitter and some others DS, at that time, watched the Ireland game and had food and wine while watching the Blicks game, had the "special of the day" which was beef, and it was excellent I must say. We don't wear name tags, but most of us are known to the senior staff, sorry we missed ya. Next time..

Langford, I watched the Irish match in the Clarion Suites as we didn't have time to go into town due to a late arrival time. I watched it with a few yanks who thought our "quarterback" was excellent. I went to Dolans later and was with mywife and my teenage daughter who was in usual teenage mode and wondered why there wasn't chicken curry etc., on the menu. I had chickendrumsticks with prawns. Maybe I would have been better off with special of the day. It wasn't that bad I suppose but then maybe I'm a fussy boll*x.

Yeah malt house is still great, was there a few weeks ago. It was a special graduation menu but still tasted grand, nowhere near as pretentious as KC Blakes beside Jury's. Also try the Quay's on Quay Street. Have seen loads of good reviews for Ard Bia also on Quay Street. And you can always have a sit-down meal in McDonaghs. Basically just go to Quay Street!!

McDonaghs is class-i always go there when in galway-the fish is always excellent
i noticed that they have replaced the name from the old irish spelling to the present-i preferred it the old way-the foods brilliant tho

Old Galway heads still refer to The Malt House as J.J. Copinger's.
I worked in the city for a couple of years.
I got a massive bit of business off a broker and we subsequently went for and early lunch - 12 ish.
A corporate funded gig, which sadly coincided with the arrival of the Beajolais Neauvau.
I crawled into at 4.58pm, with the big cheque, and then went to the pub.
Happy days.

They lost the Michelin BIB Gourmande in 2006. The qualifying price for a Bib Gourmand is under E38 and they couldn't manage this without comprimising on quality or staffing. Paul Flynn said he'd rather lose the BIB than make cuts elsewhere.

Just back from there so thought I'd mention Thai Spice just off Talbot St. in Dublin (near Connolly Station) if any of you are around. Quick, tasty, cheap Thai food, ideal for filling the gap and would really warm you up for a cold day on the terraces!

Liverpool
Puschka (http://www.puschka.co.uk/) 16 Rodney Street, L1
British/European. It was a wee bit E (we paid about £35 a head for three courses, which included one bottle of wine, water, bread etc) but stunningly well cooked, imaginative, but not over fussy food. Big smileys/thumb-up.gif

A couple I hadn't tried before (don't think they're in the list above):
Pembroke Food Hall (in the Imperial, enter the Pembroke St. door and turn right). For some reason the clientele - at lunch time at least - is very old, but the food is excellent. Not a huge selection, but what you get is delicious, great for lunches.
Soho (Grand Parade) is quite good for lunch too, similar menu to the Pembroke; again the standard is excellent. If you ask for the chicken dish, you get half a chicken. With all the big screens too, it's probably not a bad spot to watch a game.
Anyone tried Jacques in Cork; just opposite the newly opened Crane Lane Theatre? Never even heard of it until I was queueing to get in across the road; but its entire front wall is full of 'Best in Ireland' awards; have since heard it highly recommended.
I've actually changed my mind a lot on Banna Thai on Winthrop St., the venue is a little drab, but the menu has expanded and is quite tasty. Favourites include the Chicken Yellow Curry, Sweet and Sour Chicken (or Pork) but ask for it spicy!, and the Chicken and Pork Toasts are a tasty (but filling) appetiser.

You'll see a couple of mentions of 1 joint at the top of the thread....
Plenty of other places/choice too:
Brekkie -1. Cafe beside McKeoghs 2. Cassidys
Lunch - on the run - Mollys, Donovans, Goosers
dindins - Goosers (fish), Mollys, Crottys (steak).
There's also 2 bistros/wine bars (River Run, Woods), and Sakis pizzas (Mollys)are the real deal.
Plenty of places within a few miles also - I'll post if you can travel. Both hotels can have their moments (trad Sun lunch used to be excellent).
Believe it or not the food in The Cornmarket Bar is excellent. Daytime only.
Nice decor too. Very upmarket.
I've never been in there at night, although I heard the music is far too loud.

WARNING!
I have been to Rhodes D7 and had a crap experience. This is the kind of restaurant that you would go to as a special occassion because of its reputation, cost etc.
STARTERS: I had a mini risotto which was quite good and just the right size as in not too big and not too small.
My companion had the soup of the day which was bacon and cabbage and was too salty. I know with bacon you can expect some salt but this was way too much.
MAINS: My companion had a steak dish which was fine, nothing extraordinary.
I had ordered quail which came with some sort of combined mashed veg puree on a bed of linguini. However when my dish was delivered to my table it was covered in cream. The cream wasn't listed on the menu and as I am allergic to dairy products I had to send it back. I called the waiter to explain the predicament when he just gave me a smart arse answers saying that they can't put every ingredient on the menu and when i saw linguini I should have known myself that there would be cream! As I said to him pasta can be served with a tomato based sauce too.
Anyway the biggest insult was yet to come - he took it back to the kitchen only to come back a few seconds later and ask me 'would you like us to scrape the sauce off the dish you had or would you like a fresh one without the sauce?" and a few minutes later just dumped a new dish in front of me and told me my dinner was being served to someone else!
We complained to another waitress who we knew from being there once before and she just said that he must be having an off night and there were no managers around.
We were offered no recompense, drink on the house etc.
We paid and left earlier than we had anticipated when we had made our plan to go to Rhodes.
We then went to a pub down the road and saw a couple who had also been in the Rhodes sitting nearby. She had to send back her starter, he had to send back his main and after dinner she was served a cold cappucino which she also had to send back.
So folks, don't waste your money or at least wait until they improve things.

Was in The Green Onion last night. Never been there before but was well impressed. Had warm duck salad for starters, chilli chicken with noodles and prawns for main and crepes with icecream and orange & toffee sauce for dessert. devine. the nicest thing though was the gingerbread flavoured icecream. I'd recommend it.

Took the crew (& 2 friends) to Amicus (Cork) at the w-end. Pretty full but we got a table fairly quickly (seems they don't take bookings....). Found the menu somewhat peculiar, rather wide ranging and when we saw the food we understood what they are up to. All dishes excellent (2 exceptions - a very bland veggie stir-fry and a very so-so piece of fish). Pasta and pizza is what I'd recomend here. Prices reasonable (go easy on the grog & it's not too bad; housewine is good but pricey), service v. good and a nice buzzy atmosphere. It's not haute cuisine but definately worth a visit if you like continental/med styledining.
Thanks Point. Your recommendation (top of thread)was spot-on.

What about The Cherry Tree? Very up market. - in a word, Yes!
It was/is a nouvelle cuisine type of place. Rather expensive and goes in for the type of atmosphere that does nothing for me (expensive/exclusive rather than hearty egalitarian). For instance Iwas rather disappointed with his take on a beetroot salad, although to give Harry his due he did chat about it with us very amicably later. You will get some unusual dishes, very well presented, but the emphasis is on art rather than eating.
Not where you'd go for a hearty feed, but some speak ever so highly about it.It is different and if you're into nouvelle cooking it might be just for you. If you do try I'd suggest you bring the Jag (or better still let your valet drive) and wear a bespoke suit rather than comfy loafers...
Beware they don't open every night. Passed it while out for a walk with the boss last nite- in complete darkness.

JP gave the Alzheimers society the money to buy it from his Pro-am. Has been closed for a while, planning applic in for it to be turnned into nursing home. Alzheimers also need matching funding for develop it as JP only gives money for capital purchases. At least it isn't apartments, a lot being built nearby, new whole street going in front of the Watermans, so reckon restaurant or 2 will be their. Also old Galloping Hogans nearly rebuilt, will be a Steakhouse/waterfront diner/pub.

As was mentioned below, Alzheimer's Society purchased it with JP's dosh. They haven't got past planning yet (I'm not sure it's going anywhere right now). The boss works in related areas of the the health service and the word is that the building is not really suitable for the AS.
Pity as it was a really nice spot - both hotel and resto. Alas I knew it when it was a private house. There are still good places to eat, butWatermans was a bit special. I'm not holding my breath on the rebuilt waterfront spot (don't even know if it's going to be a cafe, restaurant, pub or what); was OK as Peter's, not great after that. Hope the finished article is beter than it looks now. The old station made for a nice old pub.

We went there yesterday evening. It got fairly busy very quickly and they don't take bookings so get there early. The menu is a little bit sparse and not as innovative as Boqueria. We had garlic mushrooms, marinated pork, breaded garlic mussles, chorizo, patatas bravas, strawberries in desert wine and bottle of rosé for €51. I still prefer Boqueria but it's great to have a choice between two good tapas bars.

A couple of updates;
Man Fridays (I was driving againsmileys/mad.gif) but food was excellent. The seafood platter was amazing. Well worth a trip to Kinsale, just try and get someone else to drive.
Fishy Fishy in Kinsale. Guess what? I was driving again. We went down for Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago on spec. We ended up waiting about an hour but were able to sit out in the patio area reading the Sunday papers until the rains came but we were just heading in at that time. I don't know if they take bookings but you can't leave your name and come back in let's say 30-60 mins. A pain but we didn't mind. The food was excellent, a real feast for anybody that likes seafood. Very good value as well considering the size and quality of the portions.
We went to the Hayfield Manor last night. It wasn't cheap but then again we did push the boat out a good bit (kir royals, vintage pink champagne and a barolo). Service was first rate, as you would expect from such an establishment. Amuses bouche of sea-bass set the tone for the evening. Food was supreme and not a nouvelle cuisine sized portion in sight. It's well worth the expense for a special occasion. One should treat one's self, shouldn't one?smileys/razz.gif

goosers is over rated and has been for at least 5 years. there are
those in limerick who will go there for a bowl of soup and a pint on
sunday just to be able to return to work on a monday and say, 'oh
we had a great weekend, we went to killaloe and had a meal in
goosers!!', its all about image. these people need to get over
themselves.
On another note i have heard decent things about 27 church street.
But the new place flanagans 9formerly galloping hogans) has had
very mixed reviews locally.

yeah, i was fairly disappointed with flanagans, seems like its turning out to be just another goosers/mollys...location is great though, and its always been a lovely place to sit down by the water and have a drink...foodwise though, i wouldn't be a fan...

Well said about Goosers, James. It is too hit or miss to be acceptable, though there's actually a better chance of it being good outside of the summer months. I certainly wouldn't eat there during the tourist season.

"the local gossip is that you could be still hungry coming away from 27 Church Street (portions very small) and as far as Flanagans goes prices are crazy, beautiful decor but expensive."

Good winelist - also reasonably priced.

Thai and Vitenamese grub.
This is one for the posers and beautiful people (I'd say that Sheepshagger is a regular here, for example!)
The menu has an extensive selection, the food was excellent, service was very competent, the wine/cocktail list was excellent but the prices were on the high side for this parsimonious git.
Worth a visit for that special night out.
Approaching 4 stars on the Old Dog scale - booking recommended.

Church Street vies with the Cherry Tree for style and portions (nouvelle and small); neither would be my cup of tea. And both are on the very side of expensive.Flanagans is pretty expensive but the food, decor, ambience, etcis first-rate.I heard they had some teething problems in the first few days but on the one meal I've had thereI couldn't fault anything.
I still rate Goosers as one of the best in the land for goodfish at reasonable prices (& I include the Kinsale establishments mentioned above in that comparison). €140 fora meal for 5 (excluding drink isn't bad...) (all mains bar one were seafood), and that included a few starters, one dessert, a few coffees and a bit of lobster for one lucky person. Had a few excellent meals there in the pastcouple ofmonths - just avoid the obvious busy times unless you are prepared to wait. Agree it had a dodgy time for a while after Roger retired a few years back, but they got back on track. Doesn't have the same wine list as in the old days though (Flanagans does).
Mollys has excellent value and good quality pub-grub (& proper pizza)- just avoid weekend evenings when it's a busy bar. Same for Donovans.

Flanagan's way over priced for what it is, food, decor & location good, but again too pricey
Goosers has been trading on it's rep for far too long, menu is nothing special and same with the food.
Cherry Tree is excellent imho, but not a place to just stop by for a feed, one for the special, aniversary type meals.
Woods Brothers, good for sunday brunch
Ditto Riverrun cafe, on Ballina side.
best for pub grub, O'Donovans.by the Mace, have heard excellent mutterings about Whiskey Still in Drominer, excellent value & lovely steaks
best takeaway, Marios
honourable mention, the Indian takeaway on Killaloe side,

Kingfisher; Parnell St. (Opposite Jury's Inn). Med price. Steaks good. Breakfast excellent value and choice. Highly recommended if staying across the road and way cheaper than eating in the J's Inn. Also has own appartments to let. B&B also from €45 pps.

I've always found it incredibly hard to find a decent sit down/take away Chinese restaurant in Cork. I'vebeen a fan of the Ambassador but found it a little pricey. If any of ye are in the East Cork area and find youreselves a tad peckish, a trip to the Spring Garden in Carrigtwohill is well worth a visit. Fabulously tasty food, very friendly staff and a fantastic, well chosen menu. It's not you're average Chinese menu, it leans alot towards Thai and Malaysian too. It's a family run reataurant and it shows. I can honestly say that in the 3 years it's been open I've never had a bad meal there and the take away is as up toscratchas the quality of the restaurant food.
I would highly recommend,Chilli and SaltWings for starters and Lamb Mongolian Style or Duck in Black Pepper Sauce for mains.

El Enyesque in Arrecife. Very good local fare, Tel: 928844987. No website

Also an unusual but good one in Yaiza http://www.almacendelasal.com/index-uk.htm
I have a few more too, but don't have the telephone numbers. El Tomate in the old town is quitegood but a bit stuffy.
It depends on howold your kids are because some of these resaurants are a bit cordon bleu'ish and a bit pricey. We were on our own when we tried most of them but they are all generally kid friendly. If you need further details feel free to contact me.

Can anyone recommend a place inBaltimore or Union Hall for Lunch?
Baltimore as a few places:
The Jolie Breeze does a fry up if you dont get one where your staying. For the rest of the day they do pizzas which are pretty good, stay away from the mussles and the wine isnt great. Jacobs bar is the same owners and same food.
Chez youen's is also the same owners but is an expensive place with fresh seafood andlobster etc. Good but expensive. I went in recently and had prawns for starter (cold which i hadnt tried before) which were superb, haddock for mains which was grand (I'm not a big fish person tbh) and my wife had lobster. Some fruit and cheese to finish and a lovely bottle of chabli was 145
For lunch a soup and sandwich or an open crab in Bushes cant be beaten. Open Crab is delicious and filling so you wont need soup and its well worth it for a tenner
The Algiers Inn does more standard pub food but your looking at 15 quid for a chicken kiev for example. Used to be good but havent been there in a long time.
The Mews is a lovely restaurant and should be opening for the summer in Mid to Late May as is The Customs House which would be considered to be the best restaurant in the town.
Other than that there is Caseys pub/restaurant at the top of the hill and Rolfs Hostel. Both are less central than the rest, Rolfs was the better of the two last time I was in them (which again hasnt been for a while)

Went to Les Gourmandises in Cork last Thursday night. The food along with the presentation is top class, you could tell that there was real effort and plenty of attention to detail. Service was top class. It's expensive but it's worth it for the occasional treat. We had a starter platter (goats cheese, terrine of rabbit, John Dory and something else) and crab jelly with langoustines. Mains were John Dory and sea-bass. Deserts of creme brulee and a rhubarb plate.
I wouldn't eat any of that smileys/smiley38.gif. I'm sure it was very nice though, I've heard a lot of good things about it.

Has anyone been to Richard Corrigan's new place in Dublin yet?
Also, if anyone is up Carrick on Shannon way, try the Bistro in the Landmark Hotel. Three of us went last Friday week and each starter andmain course was brilliant. They have incredible steaks (medium rare OMG)
I had to home make pate with toast and it was super altogether.
The missue had a really brilliant smoked bacon and mushroom soup. It was a more like a comsume soup with bacon and mushrooms but its fag. My buddy had fish cakes to start. They were round (strangely enough for cakes smileys/lol.gif) about the size of a golf ball andwere coated in a sesame seed. Incredible.
Three people, three starters, three mains, one desert, bottle of red, bacardi and 7up and two beers for €159. It was very impressive I have to say.

I'm partial the the Thai curry and think the green curry from the Bambu in O'Connell Stis the best one I know. Went in there today to find they have a "buy one,get one free"offer at the moment applicable to about 10 dishes including the Thai green. Two excellent meals for €11.50,hard to beat. I have no connection with the restaurant but feel that a few hungry Munsterfans might like to take up the offer.
Takes about 15 mins which gives time for a swift aperitif in Myles Breens just around the corner. Great pint there.

never really understood the fascination with steak in restaurants, well cooked or otherwise. It one of the things i would rarely order unless i'm stuck for choice on a menu but would have frequently at home. Unless theres something particular about the sauce or the beef being aged or a different cut, but a standard fillet/sirloin with vege and pepper sauce I can have at home.

I have to say I found the cornstone quite poor. Especially in terms of value for money. It is similar in price to places like Brulees and the Market Square but not close in terms of quality.
Which is surprising as it is owned/run by the same people who run Aubars, which is very good for food in my opinion.

The Captains table is The Corner House I mentioned earlier if your looking up phone number. The captains table was the restaurant in it previously but the sign is still up outside.

Next time any of you are in Swansea I highly recommend Truffles by
Bryn-y-mor. Any 3 courses for £20 and bring your own wine (no
corkage), cheap quality meal out. Myself and the missus love the place

i worked in rolfs for a few years. used to be fantastic but has gone off the boil a bit recently. just not as good quality as it used to be. i also spent last summer training with billy olivia, the chef at the customs house (i think you mean when you say the captains table which is a b&b). absolutely fantastic restaurant and hands down the best in baltimore. he's the best cehf i've ever worked with. and it's good value for a michelin awarded place. caseys is fantastic for seafood. the sole is absolutely beautiful. you share it between two and is perfection as far as fish can go.

AuBars do good food, at least last time I was in there. Not necessarily "Irish" though. Bit of a wait for it though if I remember correctly
