Gandalf Superman and Madonna coming soon to a playground near...

LONDON (AFP) - Britney, Tiger, Gandalf and
Madonna will soon join the more usual Peters and Janes in Britain's
playgrounds, while Harry Potter may also drop in, according to a new
survey of babies' names.

Other newly-fashionable choices include
Snoop, after the US rap star, who may end up hanging out with Reebok
and Adidas, said the survey of what parents are choosing to call their
offspring.

"It seems that many of us are happy to take hero
worship to a whole new level, naming our children after the stars we
admire," said Sarah Malone of www.findmypast.com, the website which
compiled the survey.

"However, it would appear that the famous
British sense of humour is alive and well, with six parents naming
their son Gandalf, along with one Harry Potter and two Supermans," she
added.

Sport is a big supplier of names, with 1,191 little Tigers
emulating the US golf star - the top male namesake overall - while
there are three David Beckhams, 39 Gazzas, two Reeboks and three
children named Adidas.

Bizarrely, there are 26 Arsenals - a
mixture of boys and girls whose parents are presumably big fans of the
north London football club.

From the world of music, Australian
star Kylie Minogue has inspired the biggest gaggle of little girls,
with 7,261. In contrast, Madonna only manages 288 namesakes, easily
beaten by 1,611 Britneys.

Among actors Keanu Reaves has given
birth to some 1,120 little nominal offspring, while Bob Geldof's
daughter Peaches has also produced a reasonable crop of followers, as
has Apple, of which there are two.

The fashion I've noticed particularly round here is to take a perfectly nice name and spell it oddly, usually with a K - so we've got Kaytlin, Konnor, Kameron etc or to make up a name - Breeze, Tyrease and Kayden being a few of the gems I've seen recently. smileys/confused.gif

The last chapter in Freakonomics is about this very topic, here is an excerpt from the chapter
Chapter 6: Perfect Parenting, Part II; or: Would a Roshanda by Any Other Name Smell as Sweet?

A boy named Winner and his brother, Loser . . . The blackest names and the whitest names . . . The segregation of culture: why Seinfeld never made the top fifty among black viewers . . . If you have a really bad name, should you just change it? . . . High-end names and low-end names (and how one becomes the other) . . . Britney Spears: a symptom, not a cause . . . Is Aviva the next Madison? . . . What your parents were telling the world when they gave you your name.

Then there is the recent case of Temptress, a fifteen-year-old girl whose misdeeds landed her in Albany County Family Court in New York. The judge, W. Dennis Duggan, had long taken note of the strange names borne by some offenders. One teenage boy, Amcher, had been named for the first thing his parents saw upon reaching the hospital: the sign for Albany Medical Center Hospital Emergency Room. But Duggan considered Temptress the most outrageous name he had come across.

"I sent her out of the courtroom so I could talk to her mother about why she named her daughter Temptress," the judge later recalled. "She said she was watching The Cosby Show and liked the young actress. I told her the actress's name was actually Tempestt Bledsoe. She said she found that out later, that they had misspelled the name. I asked her if she knew what 'temptress' meant, and she said she also found that out at some later point. Her daughter was charged with ungovernable behavior, which included bringing men into the home while the mother was at work. I asked the mother if she had ever thought the daughter was living out her name. Most all of this went completely over her head."

Was Temptress actually "living out her name," as Judge Duggan saw it? Or would she have wound up in trouble even if her mother had called her Chastity?

It isn't much of a stretch to assume that Temptress didn't have ideal parents. Not only was her mother willing to name her Temptress in the first place, but she wasn't smart enough to know what that word even meant. Nor is it so surprising, on some level, that a boy named Amcher would end up in family court. People who can't be bothered to come up with a name for their child aren't likely to be the best parents either.

So does the name you give your child affect his life? Or is it your life reflected in his name? In either case, what kind of signal does a child's name send to the world-and most important, does it really matter?

Love the name Moxie Crimefighter - genius!

FZ called his daughters Moon Unit and Diva Muffin. He always said it was their last name that would get them into trouble!

"When Dweezil was born, Gail decided to have `natural child- birth'. At that time, the only hospital in Los Angeles that would allow this process to occur with a Dad in the delivery room was Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital.

When it was time for the Big Delivery, we experienced a slight delay - we had to fill out a mass of papers before they'd let us in, riddled with irrelevant questions like: ``What religion are you?''

Gail looked at me and said ``What do we put?'' I said, ``Musician.''

That was the first thing that upset the admitting nurse. The second thing to spoil her afternoon was when she asked: ``What are you going to name the child?'' Gail said, ``Dweezil.''

Gail's got a funny looking toe which had been the source of family amusement so often that it had aquired a `technical name': it wasn't really a toe - it was a ``Dweezil.'' I thought then and continue to think today, that Dweezil is a nice name. f**k the nurse if she didn't like it.

The nurse pleaded and pleaded with us not to name the child Dweezil. Labor pains and all, she was going to make Gail stand there unless we gave her another name to put on the form. I couldn't see letting Gail suffer just to argue the point, so I rattled off an assortment of names of guys we knew: IAN (Underwood) DON (van Vliet) CALVIN (Schenkel) EUCLID (James ``Moterhead'' Sherwood) As a result Dweezil's original birth certificate name was Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa. The nurse thought that was okay.

In spite of this harrowing experince, we always called him Dweezil. He was five years old when he discovered the `real names' on his birth certificate.

Dweezil was very upset, and demanded that steps be taken to rectify this tragedy. We hired an attorney and had his name legally changed to Dweezil."

I seem to remember, a few years ago, when Man City went to their new stadium, they opened a fans poll to name of of the ends of the ground. Witty fans from other clubs rigged the vote in favour of Colin Bell.

Deliberate or otherwise I find myself laughing this post.

The D4 thing is stereotypical in the extreme but still funny somehow.

Innocent, the Nigerian master scammer, also springs to mind.
