The day has arrived I'm off to Amsterdam tonight with Mrs PK, returning Sunday evening. Any suggestions?
We already have pencilled in the Anne Frank Museum, the Van Gogh Museum and a CanalBoat trip.

I'm a convert to mayo et frites. It's the future smileys/thumb-up.gif
There's a Vlaamse (sp ?) chipper halfway down the Damrak by that Hooters place.....worth a taster smileys/biggrin.gif
Also Piquet, just by that as well on the Damrak, there is an Indonesian restaurant called Sarang Mas which is very good. Try the Ristappfel (sp ?) which is a bit of a number of different dishes.

the Damrak is the street that connects Dam Square and Central Station. see map
to the right of Central station, as you look at it, there is the Golden Tulip Barbizon Palace hotel. Next to it is a really old church.... to the right is the Zeedijk (sp ?) some nice restaurants down there too, incl a portuguese i think. a few nice small bars around there as well.
get the train in from the airport, or depending on the hotel u stay in, you can get the KLM bus from the airport, which drops you to your hotel.

Don't forget the Rijksmuseum, it's one of the best. Canal boat is pretty good, all things considered Amsterdam is just such a lovely civilised place. Except I was there about a month ago and I already can't remember what I did. It's a sign! http://www.munsterfans.com/forum/smileys/shock.gif
(Oh, and don't freak out about signs in shops that sell food "mit slagroom", it's only "with whipped cream" http://www.munsterfans.com/forum/smileys/lol.gif)

Oh before i forget, if you go to a place called i think 'Chicago Rock Bar' or something like that during the day theres a guy that does a canal boat tour once a day thats absolute class, it's a small boat which he owns himself and he has no problem with you bringing beer or cigs with you on the boat for the tour, we had a ball, i was well on my way by the time we got back, was a really nice tour as well, its a small boat and its less touristy than the main ones you go for

if your around Leidsplein, there is a good italian called Rest. Da Pepino, just walk past the haggen Daz store and its down that side street on the left, always busy but worth waiting if you have to

Crossing the road is a nightmare. First there is the bike lane on your own side, then the car lanes, then the trams going both ways; then the car lanes on the other side, then the bike lane again and finally the footpath. I agree with Point that the cyclists are the most dangerous (and the most obnoxious.) They seem to have precedence over everthing and everybody else.

the canal boat is a must-notice the fascinating buildings and architecture of the merchants houses where you can still see the lifting gear which used to be used to take everything into the house from the canal. Outside central station is a musical yoke which i thought was something out of a hans christian anderson book. go on the trams-i think you can get a day pass and see the real amsterdam.
If you dont go to the red light area you wont miss anything-its tame and nothing to compare with kings cross-sydney.

Very true, actually ate their the night before heading to the Italian, in reality theres dozens of restauraunts to choose from, I think the old adage of picking somewhere clean and busy comes into play, and if you like steak there are loads of argentinian places to pick from. Saying that I went into a traditional dutch restauraunt, all it was various types of pie and mash, very disappointing

AVOID the red quarter!!! It stinks, it is ugly and full of crooks. Walk along the beautiful canals instead (prinsengraacht for example).
If you want a coffe shop go to Dutch Flowers it is a peaceful on the Keisergraacht canal, for a bar and sncks I strongly recommend the Molden Pad at the cross of Prinsengracht and Moldenstraat.
Enjoy!

I spent a number of months working at a customer site in Amersfoort and the canteen food was varied....but deep fried ! Quite surprising really.

Thanks for all the advice.Getting the Anne Frank and the Van Gogh tickets in advance was a godsend. We ate in the Italian in Leidesplein on the Saturday night. It was great. We would have eaten in the Mexican but they were full and told us to come back in 15 minutes. While we were mooching around we found the Italian.
Amsterdam is a lovelycity, nice and compact, good tram system (get the multi-journey passes in Tourist Offices, its way cheaper than paying on the tram). The amount of bicycles is amazing. They're all the old "High Nelly" type I didn't see a single bike with gears. You take your life in your hands crossing the streets though.
While the Tour of the Heineken brewery was good, from a technical viewpoint, it was disappointing that there was no reference (or Merchandise) to the HC.
We should play the "Home" QF in Amsterdam
