At least there's one on the way anyway, been waiting years for a new one. The League game doesn't look too great from what I've seen. Might give it a miss, feel free to post a review though smileys/wink.gif

The reviews are coming in. The new Football Manager is looking good.
Eurogamer gave it 9/10. For the first time they're saying that the
player and media interaction is actually decent, which is something
I've been waiting for for quite a while. I haven't played it since 2008
(09?) so hopefully the other updates they did in the past will be nice
now. Plus the 3D match engine is supposedly nicer.

There's a demo out, but I'm holding off. I don't want to get sucked into
a game only to have it stop after six months. The people who have
played it say the 3D engine is looking very nice now, a lot of things
have been smoothed out. I've wanted to like it, but the 2D engine was
just so accomplished that the 3D paled in comparison. The other reports
are that it's gotten harder with lower level teams, which is fine. I'm
used to being fired after seven or eight months then finding another
really bad team, hiring the best players from my previous team, and then
getting fired after an even shorter period of time.

I don't know what I'll do for a team, probably a lower league English
team. bo***cks to taking a Man Utd/Chelsea. You just spend your way to
victory. I don't know of the lads on the Lower League Management forum
of the SI boards have a new Frank set up for picking a team. If anyone
has a favourite LL Team I might consider taking them on, if you don't
mind me dooming your team.

Probably the bit I'm most looking forward to is seeing how it performs
on my new PC. The slowest part of FM was always it's work on the
databases, and I always played with as many as I could manage. Now I
have an SSD I'm eager to see how it fairs.

The game is out on the 5th I think. You can get the demo and the game on Steam.

Lord of the Rings Online has gone free2play. I'd say you can get to about level 20 without having to shell out for the mission packs.

I played it when it came out. It's a decent game, great graphics and the quests are interesting. It really feels like a Tolkein game. It's worth a try if you're looking for something to do, or want to dip your toes into an MMO with some casual play.

Are you playing it on the 360 ruck? It crashed on me with the corrupt save issue, and all save files to that point are goosed. Bathesda said on the 5th that they're issuing a patch in a few weeks</span> I've restarted and I'm saving constantly, so hopefuly it will go ok.

Yep, playing on the 360. No issues as bad as that for me yet. Worst thing so far has been the occasional crash. The scope for several play throughs in these games is fantastic. Playing it fairly straight at the moment, not doing much bad stuff. On my next playthrough, I'm going to shoot every single character I meet, right in the face. smileys/biggrin.gif

Not a big fan, I'm only still with it because the COD forum on Boards.ie parties I play in are playing.

Finally settled on a few decent SMGs (Spectre and AK74U with grip and extended mags - Marathon, Warlord and Lightweight for Dom) but still not sure of the assault rifles.
Maps, killstreaks and guns all encourage camping, IMO.
Have come across a lot more people lying prone and waiting for someone to run in front of them than happened in MW2.

leaning back towards the M16 cos of the better accuracy,

Been back playing MW2 a bit, it reminds me of some of the reasons for Black Ops (commando, OMA with DC and noobtubes) but even still I must say I do prefer MW2.

I mostly play Dom so I tend to stick with SMGs.

Depends on what you want from your console really.
If you are buying it as a family entertainment console, then the Kinect is selling almost double that of it's PS3 competitor.
If you're looking for a console as entertainment for yourself. Xbox has a larger library of games. Online multiplayer is better than the PS3. But the PS3 is probably a better media centre.

If you have a HD tv and would like to have a blu-ray player
then the PS3 has that built in, the xbox will plays DVD's but
not blu-ray. If you just want it for gaming either or, as
mentioned the Xbox has a larger library of games and is
cheaper too and xbox live is quiet good. Kinect is basically
turning an xbox into a wii for certain games. if that floats
your boat go for it. Good for party games but a bit of a
novelty in my eyes. Like Ruck said it all depends how you'll
use it

The difficulty (much like GTA) would be in the degree of choice the game gives you. You can take various routes through, so even though I'm much of the way through it I couldn't tell you what might be in there that I've missed.

It would depend what you're concerned about as well. If graphic violence is ok, as I'm assuming it is from the COD games, then that would be most of it out of the way.

It goes further than some games inavoiding controversy- it's impossible, for instance, to shoot child characters.

There's the odd bit of swearing, references to sex etc. But there's nothing in there that would raise the bar for anyone who's played through the airport level in Modern Warfare 2.

Agree with what Balla says, but the cut scenes when a character is killed can be quite gruesome, including dismemberment, decapitation.

Valencia

Cheers for that. He has played the airport scene in COD, a scene which I find a bit uncomfortable and don't like to play at all. It has mentioned Drug use on the box, so was a bit concerned about that, but as regards the gore it doesn't seem to bother him at all.

The drug use thing is around certain performance boosting chemicals - take this to deal more damage, this to be more damage resistant, this to repair.

There are some storylines around the smuggling of those chems, but there's not the sort of casual references to recreational drug use you'd find in GTA. The general impression given is quite negative, actually. If you over use them in the game you can become addicted, and that impairs your performance.

Am leaning towards buying anouther PS3 at the moment, or should I go for the Xbox?
Opinions welcome...

If you have some PS3 games that you will play again in the future, or you use the PS3 as a blu-ray player. Stay with the PS3.
Otherwise, I'd recommend xbox360.

If you already have blu-ray movies and games for the PS3 I'd
stick with it. Not keen on PS controllers personally, prefer the
xbox controller.

Has there been any more word or info on this EA Rugby World

Black Ops Help!

Lads/Lassies, the young lad has told me that when playing Black Ops at the moment, all the gore has gone and even the occasional bits of language that were therehave been dubbed down...

He thinks he must have altered some setting, is this possible?? He is missing his gorefest, so any help appreciated. It's only happening on Black ops

I'm shooting every character I meet, in the face, then when it comes to the legion decision, I'm gonna save it and continue shooting people in the face until I finish it. Then I'll reload and align with the Legion and see how that ends.
Shooting people in the face is awesome. I want one of those anti-material guns for real life.

Was looking at getting Medal Of Honor and Black Ops for the laptop, one thing that turns me off is the keyboard controls.
I have Modern Warfare 2, but it is Keyboard control only, even though I loaded up a joypad.

Anyone know if the MoH &amp; Black Ops are joypad controlled or keyboard controled? I have no patience for Keyboard controlled games.

Finished Assassin's Creed Brotherhood the other day.
Great game. Not what I expected at all. I thought it was your standard DLC thingy that isn't worth the money, with some online play just tacked on.
It's a whole new game and story though, with 9 full chapters and hours upon hours of gameplay.
The online is excellent too, very different from any other form of online gaming that I've played.

Dead Space 2 is out at the end of the month. Can't wait for that. First game was dead creepy.

Playing Transformers War for Cybertron on Xbox 360 at the moment - I must say it is quite enjoyable... probably has something to do with the nostalgia factor!

The missus also bought me Halo Reach (which I have yet to start) and Call of Duty Black Ops for Christmas... looking forward to getting my teeth into them also, once the smallie goes to bed!

Also got an Xbox Kinect and its really great fun - the game that comes with it, Kinect Adventures is a bit of craic, but am wondering if anyone can recommend any other good Kinect games?

Sony has unveiled its new handheld games console the PSP 2.

At a special event in Tokyo, company bosses revealed what they are officially calling the NGP or Next Generation Portable.

There were no details on how much it is likely to cost but it is expected to be out sometime towards the end of 2011.

The NGP is being launched into an increasingly competitive market with Nintendo's 3DS out soon and a boom in mobile gaming on smartphones.Dual analogue sticks

The device boasts a 5-inch OLED touch screen screen as well as Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity to enable people to download games and other content.

The oval design (182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm) also features a rear panel touchpad to control certain actions and a motion sensor.

There is a front and rear camera too plus the traditional navigation buttons and, for the first time, dual analogue sticks.http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50976000/jpg/_50976098_ngp_reuters.jpg Sony hope the NGP can rival Nintendo's DS

Executives at Sony hope the new features will be good enough to win over gamers.

Its predecessor, the PSP, was launched in 2004 and to date has sold 65 million units.

But that is less than half the number of sales of Nintendo's DS (136 million).

Nintendo are also launching the world's first 3D handheld games console in March, the 3DS.

The 3DS has generated a huge amount of hype, partly because users don't need special glasses for the 3D content to work.

Meanwhile smartphones are also fuelling a boom in mobile gaming leaving some experts wondering whether specific handheld games consoles are becoming redundant.PlayStation phone

A popular title like Angry Birds costs a fraction of the price of console games to develop and is also cheaper for customers to buy.

Yet with around 40 million downloads it has raked in millions of pounds for developers Rovio.

However, Sony is more than aware of the potential of mobile gaming.

The heavily rumoured PlayStation phone is expected to be unveiled at next month's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

It also announced its new PlayStation Suite application for Google Android phones at the Tokyo conference.

Out later this year, that will let users run video games with the same quality of the original PlayStation and be compatible with the NGP.

Rugby World Cup 2011 will reflect in detail the incredible action and passion of Rugby's showcase sporting event with the most accurate Rugby experience ever created.

Developed by leading Rugby developer HB Studios, Rugby World Cup 2011 represents the studio's first Rugby game on this generation of consoles and takes full advantage of the available hardware to create a game that reflects the prestige of the world's third-largest sports event.

Rugby World Cup 2011 will challenge players to pick from the 20 World Cup 2011 participating countries, and attempt to lead their team through the pool phase progress to the Final and the opportunity to lift the prestigious Webb Ellis Cup.

National rivalries, venues and player personalities are perfectly captured as participants will fight for the pride of their nation in either solo play or with up to three friends in local multiplayer matches. For the first time, Rugby World Cup 2011 will give players the chance to fight for the glory of their country online by challenging other players to one-on-one matches online.

The weird thing about the rugby games was that the better they got, in terms of graphics, more accurate re the rules of the games, scrums, lineouts, etc. the less fun they were to play.

The 2008 game wasn't bad, but it was nowhere near as good a laugh as Jonah Lomu Rugby, or even the 2005/6 games, where you could get away with taking people out off the ball, standing 10 yards offside and getting away with it just by flicking R2 as the scrumhalf was about to pass, hands in the ruck. Great fun to play with a group of lads drinking a few tins.

From the article there, I think it might just be a World Cup game which would be disappointing, but hopefully they'll have Super Rugby, Heineken Cup, and the major domestic leagues as well

I'd heard that from Sports Interactive alright. They said they looked into it though, so they were at least thinking of doing it. Fair enough if they don't think there's the market. There's years between rugby sims, so obviously the market isn't there for them. And I'd imagine it to be even smaller for a management game.

Still, I have to have something to set my eyes on when learning to program. In my dreams it's going to make me millions when I release it, but if I even get so far as being willing to show it to people I'll be happy out.

Yeah, I gave Blackout Rugby a go when it first came out, didn't click with me.

Didnt click with me either as the format seems good. Just not as good as something from Sports Interactive.

I would think there would be major interest from South Africa/Australia/new Zealand, the top european nations and then minor interest from up and coming countries.

If there were different formats you could manage such as League, Union, 7's it could pull in more people.

so does this not mean hollywood could challenge existing age restrictions on DVD's or even cinema going?

The US Supreme Court has struck down a Californian law banning the sale or rental of violent video games to those aged under 18.

The court voted 7-2 to uphold an appeals court ruling that declared the law contrary to free speech rights enshrined in the US Constitution.

Video game publishers challenged the 2005 measure, which never took effect because of legal proceedings.

Supporters argued the law was needed as violent games could harm children.

Speaking at the Supreme Court on Monday, Justice Antonin Scalia said: "Our cases hold that minors are entitled to a significant degree of First Amendment protection.

"Government has no free-floating power to restrict the ideas to which they may be exposed."

The US video game industry has about $10.5bn (£6.55bn) in annual sales.

'Morbid interests'

The 2005 California law prohibited the sale of violent video games to children "where a reasonable person would find that the violent content appeals to a deviant or morbid interest of minors, is patently offensive to prevailing community standards as to what is suitable for minors, and causes the game as a whole to lack serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value for minors".

Under the law, parents could still purchase violent video games for their children, but retailers caught selling the titles to minors could face a fine of up to $1,000 (£625) for each game.

After a legal challenge by industry groups, a district court and then the court of appeals stopped the law coming into effect.

Courts in six other states have also reached similar conclusions, striking down bans.

There is already a nationwide voluntary system of game classification in the US.

Think what you have to remember is how long it took to get games like Madden/other NFL games to the level they are now. Rugby is still very much in its infancy, this looks a big improvement on the previous. Agree that Jonah Lomu is still probably the best rugby game.

RWC 2011 looks unsurprisingly similar to Rugby 08 as far as
the animations goes. Must've played a couple of hundred
games of it back in college to pass the time and those tackles
and gimpy swan dives are too familiar. Given EA's laziness in improving their rugby game over the years, i wouldn't be
surprised if the AI is still shocking (eg. no defender on the
blindside for a 5m scrum and the other teams winger hugging
the touchline) and it freezes as much as Fallout 3.

Fair play. Tried it a fair bit myself when I was younger and

Definitely hang on. RWC 11 only has 20 intl teams and a world cup. Rugby Challenge has around 40 intl teams, Super 15 rugby, Rabbo Direct Pro12, English Premiership, Maybe French league, plus a lot of smaller competitions. Plus there is a great editing tool, where you can change players attributes, names etc. Career mode of 13 years also.

I've been playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution all week. Great game, but there are some flaws.
The graphics are slightly out of date. This doesn't really take away from the game though. The gameplay more than makes up for it. Really enjoyable.
The voice acting though .... sweet zombie jesus! God awful doesn't begin to cover it.
Still an excellent game though and a must play. You should get at least two play throughs of it as you can play with either stealth or all out action, or even combine the two. Well worth the 50 bucks.

So what's the consensus on Rugby Challenge?

Games I've played recently:
Gears of War 3 - Brilliant game and an excellent end to the series. Online multiplayer is tough, but excellent fun.
Forza 4 - Best racing game I've played. Stunning graphics, great gameplay.
Batman: Arkham City - Excellent game. Every bit as good as Arkham Asylum. Story is as good as you'd see in the comics, and the voice acting is absolutely top notch again. Mark Hamill's Joker is just brilliant. Huge variety of baddies to face. Felt that the attempted replication of the Scarecrow levels wasn't really as good as the first game though.

Anyone else playing Skyrim? No? You should be.

It's really good. I quite liked Oblivion and put 100+ hours into it. Skyrim is better, and even people who hated Oblivion are saying Skyrim is great. It's getting 10/10 all over the place.

So far, I've played about 10 hours. Eight of that was spent doing quests in and about cities. I've more or less abandoned the main quest and am messing about elsewhere first. And by god is it distracting. I started it up to check what ingredients I had for potions earlier on, no more than a ten minute task. An hour and three quarters later I've finished up, and that was only playing around within the Mages Guild college. Great game. And if you get it on PC the mods for it are going to be unreal.

Was thinking of getting this only thing is would not have a huge amount of time to play it an hour or two every so often, so question is would it be worth it from all the reviews I have read seems like a massive game and not sure it would suit someone who was just going to be dipping in and out of it, would I be better of getting something like assassins creed?

I think you would be better off with AssCreed, to be honest. The best bits about the game are when you get fascinated by something off the beaten track. Say you're walking along to a quest, then you kill three or four wolves, realise you have enough leather to make more stuff, so you go back and make that, but you're one short of a new piece of armour, so you steal from the blacksmith, etc. If you only have an hour you might find yourself ignoring interesting side stuff and you wouldn't get into it as much. If you had two hour sessions every few days it'd be worth it, but not if you have less time than that.

I'd say it should be a Christmas game for a lot of people. You'll have a few days where you can spend 6+ hours on it, then you can dip in and out at your own leisure after that.

Only got the Xbox in sept and quite happy to buy games that are slightly older for a song, cant understand buying something for 50 lids when it'll be half that in 6 months. Although this Skyrim love in has piqued my interest massively.

Enjoyed Arkham Asylum too, might get city from Snanta

Have started Skyrim. It's infuriating, and excellent all at once.
Too many glitches. I experienced my first glitch before the opening titles had even finished.
Graphics are decent for the sheer size of the world. Can't help but feel that these games will be absolutely amazing on the next generation of game.
I keep forgetting to save though, which is driving me bat**** crazy at this stage. Went into a cave last night, and there was no way i could progress through the whole thing, and there was no way back out (it was more of a pit, than a cave I suppose). I had to revert to my last save, which had been 45 minutes earlier.
In total, I've played about 6 hours, and done absolutely nothing of note. Where's the time gone?

Depends on your skill level really. If you're not used to the combat system, then you'll be well challenged on the normal difficulty.
Excellent game HR, you'll love it.

There's a game+ that you unlock when you finish your first playthrough which makes it altogether harder. Haven't played it yet myself. But you don't get any alerts as to which character is going to attack you, when you're in a street brawl. I'm not sure what else the game+ adds though.

I'm thinking about getting a PS3 when I move into a new place come June. Thing is, the TV there is an old standard definition thing. I'm not paying for a new telly, but I'd make use of a new monitor, a 24inch 1080p one. Thing is, HDMI usually carries both video and audio to normal TV screens. Getting the video to a monitor is no problem, but what do I do about the audio? I don't want to invest in a big home cinema sound system and I figure the 2watt speakers you can get in some monitors will be rubbish.

What do I do?

Bosco

Could you find a cheap 2.1 set up with an optical out for audio? Or does your monitor have 3.5mm out put you could connect better speakers to?

I didn't know that either of those things were an option. I'll see if I can get a monitor with the 3.5mm out.

Don't know how readily available one of those monitors would be, remember having one in a previous job, but don't remember what make, it wasn't HD anyways

I've found one. It's pretty much the cheapest 1920*1080 one going, and it's non-LED which I said I'd never go for again. I've only looked on Dabs but I haven't found any cheap-enough speakers that do the digital line (I'm guessing there's a digital out on the back of the PS3.)

Dragon Age 2 any good fwiends?

Or should I just plump up for Skyrim? Still cant justify to myself spending big money on a game that'll be 20 quid in a few short months (I could get DA2 and another game for the same twine like)

Also looking at Deus EX, Enslaved, Devil May Care 4 (any of them clangers?) Well bored with running around with a gun shooting things at this stage, it seems to be all that games are made about these days.

Thank you for any advice in advance!

I would recommend Skyrim Cowboy. Great depth and a lot of the bugs have been ironed out with patches by now. I was never one for kings, knights and dragons-style RPG games but there is a charm to Skyrim that kept me coming back for weeks on end.

Have completed most of it, bar a few side quests and now waiting on the new DLC coming out in the Summer. My layman's business mind would guess that Skyrim will drop in price closer to this date- maybe not- but you would pick it up second hand comparatively cheap even now I would say- 20 or even 30e would be a steal if you are looking for something to wile away large chunks of spare time on.

If you're sick of recent FPS then I would also recommend a more cerebral take on the genre and taking a look at Hitman Blood Money on the Xbox Marketplace. It's going for E20 but it's well worth it as a slow paced stealth game that can also be played as a louder, bloodier FPS if that takes your fancy. The graphics are a bit dated but the gameplay is great and some of the level design is fantastic. There's a follow up out this summer but Blood Money really holds up. That or Splinter Cell Conviction which is floating around for a tenner in Gamestop and HMV.

Hope this helps.

Many many MANY thanks JD!

I freaking loved Fallout and Bethesda has a great 'feel' to it's creations. I'm completely worn out by FPS's at this stage, it's impossible escape them it seems (I had a hoot with Rayman Origins, a relic of a bygone era) It's a game to get lost in I'm after and by the looks of things Skyrim is that game.

I also saw splinter cell conviction in Hmv for a tenner! Might roll with that. It might be that I'm new to the gaming world but there's an alarming convergence in games going on, studios don't seem to possess the balls to run with something risky that won't shift in volumes. Saddening.

Still can't wait to get Mass Effect 3 though ;)

No problem!

Still haven't got my hands on ME3, have heard mixed reports but will get around to it eventually.

I think you're on to something regarding the games industry today. It seems like there's never been more money or mainstream acceptence of gaming, yet there is a sense of homogeneity in some of the console games being released. In some ways, it's as if games are simultaneously more cinematic graphically, but are less taxing or complex in story or gameplay. Some of the bigger companies and games appear to follow the path of least resistance.

There are exceptions on console of course, but I've returned to the PC recently and some of the grand strategy games like Europa Universalis 3 and 'rougelikes' like Dwarf Fortress. A bit more freedom and a lot more scope for creativity, especially since some of these games are given out for free.

But never mind my ranting, Skyrim is your man for games to get lost in:cool:

SKYRIM!!!!

Incredible game, it has it all. Completely engrossing, at the moment I'm wandering around battering the heads off people but I think its time to bone up on enchanting and spellcasting.

Have to say its a truly wonderful game, every quest, every journey, every discussion has something interesting or engrossing in it. There are literally dozens of narratives going on most of the time you're playing.

And then a dragon flies overhead out of nowhere and you've to fight it....... savage.

EA Origin Hacked; Time to Change Your Passwordshttp://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17z00h8twlstpjpg/avt-small.jpg Whitson Gordon

Video game fans, take heed: many users are reporting that their EA Origin accounts—the ones required to play games like Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3, and many other popular titles—have been breached, meaning it's time to change your passwords.
You all know the drill by this point: Time to change the password to your EA account before someone gets a hold of it, and if you use the same password on any other accounts, you shouldchange them too (http://lifehacker.com/5712907/use-lastpass-to-audit-and-update-your-passwords). You can do this by logging into EA.com (http://www.ea.com/) clicking on your username in the top right corner, and changing it from there (though you can also do it from the Origin desktop client). No word yet on how many accounts were breached or how, since EA has yet to say anything useful about the subject. Hit the link to read more.

I'm constantly told that Oblivion has a better story etc. but I'm a big medieval fantasy nerd and Skyrim is just awesome for that.
The scenery, some of the missions, the music, the history, the feeling of immersion, the story...it's just fantastic really.

Have played once as a bit of a mix (my first go), then went with sword and shield wielding bad-ass tank and then tried a mage, there's plenty in between as well.

Malkoran is killing the **** outta me. I cant beat the bastard

I'm sure there's plenty of guides online to beat him but I randomly came across a quest that ended up giving me Spellbreaker (a shield that protects you from magic) and the rest became easy from there on in - mages would regularly **** me up (I was an Imperial tank with no protection from elemental attacks) up to that point. I don't want to ruin any fun you by saying where etc., just in case you like wandering around and doing radiant quests but I highly recommend having a look for the Spellbreaker quest and giving it another go against him..

I played a bit of Torchlight II last night. Great game, much better than Diablo 3 which was a bit of a waste of €50. Torchlight is just fun: non-stop clicky death. The loot is good, you're always getting something that you have to think about. The dungeons are much better than Diablo 3. Definitely give it a go if you're looking for a PC game.

I bought it just before Christmas. It's only €19 and it's a big enough game and well worth it. It regularly goes on sale, so if you can get it for it's usual sale price of a tenner it's a no brainer to pick up. With Diablo 3 it felt like playing was a chore and I had to do it to get my money's worth. With this I'm counting the hours until I can play again.

I'm a slow gamer. It takes me ages to finish anything because I don't play often and when I get a chance, I do all the side missions etc and I play it again at a harder level.

Currently playing Borderlands2 - excellent and very funny.

Next up, trading in my old GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption for GTA5 pre order.
Gonna trade in many more games including all of my call of duty bar world at war (the best one), as they are just sitting there gathering dust. May as well get something new.

No, it's not. It's still a good game in its own right but didn't kick on enough from the original in my view.

It'd still be a nice one to pick up second hand though, worth playing, but plot wise it's not as good.
