New PC build pencilled in for this month.

Sarsfield's PC Nesting season (for this is what it is known as by my fair laydee) is upon us! Huzzah! smileys/biggrin.gif

Core 2 Duo E8400 (when it comes out...)
4GB PC26400 (only €85 on Dabs.ie!)
Intel p35 mobo
320 GB HDD 7200rpm
8800 GTS 512mb

Bioshock, Crysis, MTW 2 Kingdoms all to be sampled. If only I can get away from Civ IV...

PS - Is there anybody out there using Vista for gaming? Is this DX10 lark up ot it? Does it hog all your RAM?

Nice. Very nice. How much is that setting you back? You'll need vista, not for this year, but for the next few years. That machine will have no bother with it anyway. Besides, you can strip down vista just like XP, turn off all the fancy stuff, and the mountain of useless background services and processes that microsoft stick in there for some reason and you'll be laughing. MTW is a fantastic game, as is Civ IV (not as addictive as Civ II was in it day mind you.) The other two would just chew up my setup and spit it out.....smileys/sad.gif

Can't give you an exact figure as the E8400 hasn't been released yet but about €210 seems likely so all told about €700, maybe a little less. I have a case, DVD burner and power supply already. Depending on funds, the graphics card might have to wait a while. I have a 7800GT at present so that has another few months in it if needs be.

Civ IV has swallowed my life for the last few months. I've never come across a game which exudes One-more-turn-itis

So I've been given to understand. It curently sits in its DVD case on my shelf smuggly saying, "Call that a gaming PC, mate? I'd fry its chips in a light batter and eat them for breakfast..."

Sarsfield - 4GB RAM is overkill, you really don't need that much. I don't even think Windows XP knows what to do with that much memory. Also, what resolution are you going to be playing at? The 8800GT preforms better than the GTS at pretty much all lower resolutions, and it's cheaper. So go for one of those unless you're buying a gigantic widescreen monitor.

Can't advise you on Vista since I don't have it, but I'm not rushing to get it anyway.

Sarsfield, would a quad core be more suited to gaming? I know the QX series is fairly expensive. How would the E8400 measure up to the Q6600?

Having a crazy processor is one thing but a lot of games don't know how to use 4 cores. You'd could easily find 2 sitting idle while playing a game because that's the way the game is optimised. An E6600 is perfectly fine to run anything on today's market (including Crysis) on high settings with an appropriate graphics card and 2GB of decent RAM running at 800MHz+. I think sometimes people get swept up in getting the best (and most expensive) part they can when it's just not needed.

Edit - Another thing. If you're going to build your own rig you might as well take it one step further and look into overclocking. The C2D processors are easily overclocked and can be hugely improved in spec. The Nividia 8800 series cards can also be overclocked, the lower cards can be made perform like the GTX. There are risks involved but if you're putting the machine together yourself already then I think it's worth it.

DDR2 RAM is dirt cheap at the moment (and it being RAM it might not be this time next year) so I'm not worried too much by overkill. It's 2X2GB as well which is attractive because it leaves me a spare channel to go nuts in 18 months time for a smallish outlay if I so choosesmileys/wink.gif. I know about the XP issue (will only identify about 3.5GB) but I was mulling a move to Vista anyhow (I can get it cheap/free...). I'll be gaming at 1280X1024 but this system has to do me for two years minimum (I've a mortgage to be paying) and I've found that putting a small bit extra into your system at the begining means a decent bit of extra longevity. You're absolutely right about the gfx, an 8800GT is a) cheaper and b) better

Sarsfield, would a quad core be more suited to
gaming? I know the QX series is fairly expensive. How would the E8400
measure up to the Q6600?

That's a tricky one. At present the answer is no. 99% of games are not optimised for quad cores (though more will be in the months to come). Currently an E6850 clearly outperforms the similarly-priced Q6600 in gaming benchmarks and the E8400 is apparently a step above the the E6850 (larger cache - very good for games). That said, whether one would notice the difference between 50 fps and 60 in Crysis is moot and if quad-core optimisation becomes more prevalent in the shortish term then it might be a better option.

The reason I'm leaning towards a here-and-now comparison as opposed to potential in 12 months is that I bought a 64-bit proc a number of years ago based on the assumption that 64-bit optimisation was @@@@SPAN style="font-style: italic;">juuuust@@@@/SPAN> around the corner. It wasn't.

My previous experiences with overclocking have not been terribly happy but I have heard tell that a G0 steeping Q6600 is a doozie to overclock

With regards to overclocking: Make sure you have a very good cooling system if you're going to overclock your processors and graphics card. Get extra fans for your case, make sure you have a good layout for the fans, I cut a circular hole at the top of the case, one at the bottom put a fan on both of them and sealed up the rest of the case as bestI could. This creates a wind tunnel effect. Keep monitoring your core temperature, thereare programs out there that will display this on screen in a game just like a frame rate. I found that the core temp was fine in the benchmarking but crept up after a while of gaming, so my next trick was to connect the bottom hole up to on of those wire framed paper pipes and stick the other end out the window. Instant refrigeration. Needless to say, this is not a good idea when it is damp or rainy outside. It is however a better idea than putting the case on your window, somebody opens the door to the room, draft of wind, pc goes out the 2nd story window.......

smileys/lol.gifWhat I did was just messing about, you get an increase in performance because you can overclock just a little bit harder with better cooling.

Its a very serious hobby for some people though. There is even professional overclockers out there. Dell have recently started selling factory made overclocked pcs. Prices are nuts of course.

Fan cooling is the most basic,

then you have water cooling, fairly common(yes, you actually pipe water into your pc),

refrigeration with a heat pump,

cooking oil cooled, look at these nutcases http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/01/09/strip_out_the_fans/,

and nitrogen cooled which has the world record at the moment I think, they cooled a 3.2GHz to -190 and got the speed up to 5.2Ghz, http://www.tomshardware.com/2003/12/30/5_ghz_project/index.h (http://www.tomshardware.com/2003/12/30/5_ghz_project/index.html) tml.

Also got Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii, which is an RE rail shooter. Quite entertaining too, haven't gotten too far yet though.

SP3 is out in the next month or so, it wont be a huge overhaul (I've been playing with the beta) its mainly just a load of security issues.

On XP and more then 3Gb of RAM, it will use more then 3Gb but the OS will only see 3, that doesnt mean that the rest is useless, its still there for use.

@@@@SPAN style="font-weight: bold;">Motherboards is another area where I'd avoid cutting corners. It's the bed-rock of your machine and a bad mobo can really casue pain. I've used gigabyte boards for some time and I've found them very easy to work with, likewise ASUS. IMO it's a good idea to get a mobo that can also support DDR3. It's ridiculously expensive now but that's now... 12 months time could be @@@@SPAN style="font-style: italic;">very@@@@/SPAN> different and that would allow you a cheap but highly effective upgrade (DDR3 8500 will match the FSB of the processor and the board). SLi could be nice too but it's far from essential as in reality, by the time you consider it, the original card (and they must match) could be hard to source. <a href="http://www.dabs.ie/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4KRT&CategorySelectedId =11143&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11143,405070000,50 509,4294953797" target="_blank" target="_blank"

Happy to help! Getting a buddy who's done it be fore to be on hand if things go skew-shaped is a real boon. Self-build is a very rewarding way to go about assembling a PC because it's to your exact specifications and it equips you mentally and technically for resolving problems WHEN they occur (and they will occur). Good luck and let us know how it goes, My next build (sometime before the end of Feb) will be along similar lines to yours

182 plus 18 for postage, everywhere has sold them out, can't get them for love nor money in ireland at the moment, I just found a place in the uk (Tekheads) that had ten left, by the time I had finished ordering they had 5 left. Going like hot cakes, the overclockers love them, loads of people reporting overclocks of 3.6G on the stock voltages with the standard fan. With a proper fan, worth 30 -40quid or so they are getting 4G withfairly small voltage increases! One guy with a decent water cooled system (nothing specialabout 100 quids worth) got 5.1G. smileys/shock.gif..... Although running it at that will probably half the lifespan of the chip, its bloody impressive. I really think intel have just struck the killer blow on AMD. there is nothing on the AMD drawing board to match this performance and low price. They just don't have the fabrication processes that are required to make the 45nm chips.Game over, AMD will be sticking to their graphics card after this methinks.

Yeah didn't get much extra out of my Athlon 2800. Like their graphics cards though easy to overclock with theATI tray tools program. Even still, I've got a geforce 8800GT in the post. I wanted a intel processor, which works better with an intel motherboard, which works better with a intel GPU, hence the 8800GT.

We should probably start a new thread for the PC talk. We're probably annoying the console gamers. Rest assured, when my kit arrives I'll be getting Call of duty 4, turning up all the graphicssettings to max (I recently saw it being played at medium settings and it still looked cinematic), laugh in delight as my FPS indicator says 50-60 fames per second and then you won't hear me shut up about video games for a month or two.

My hitlist of games over the next few months/year.

COD4

World in conflict

Bioshock(maybe)

The orange box

Crysis (probably the only game that will i'll have to overclock to get max graphics)

Supreme commander (maybe, its a bit too scifi)

I'll already have company of heros, and Medieval total war, I'll look forward to seeing these run at max, my machine has a tough time with them at the moment.

Not yet boss, I'm waiting until after I get my car serviced (next week) to see how poor or not I am. I'm not surprised about the E8400. To be fair to Dabs, they probably haven't a clue of the actual date as suppliers will let them down the whole time (that doesn't excuse them giving you the run-around though). I'd expect that demand for this chip is absolutely huge and it'll take a few weeks for Intel to get the finger out. If you have the patience at all I'd say hold on for the 8400 but to be honest, the real-world difference between a Q6600 and an E8400 is probably not all that marked and if you want to play Crysis (I've got it sitting on the shelf until I upgrade) then it would possibly be better (SFAIK it's quad-core optimised).

I don't think there's a badly wrong call to be made here

You see, therein lies the rub. I reckon AMD have bottomed and are on the way back up, the HD3850 and HD3870 cards are viable competitors to their nVidia competitors and the Phenom quad cores, while not brilliant are a step in the right direction and not as poo in comparison. They're clawing back the ground slowly but surely. For now, Intel is still the only way to go.

I Need some advice please: I'm thinking about getting a PS3. Is it worth going down the e-bay route and getting a Hong-Kong 60/80GB version or should I just get the bog-standard 40GB version in argos. I'm not bothered that the home version doesn't play PS2 games because the Hong Kong version isn't going to play our region PS2 games anyway is it? Is there any real advantage with the 60 or 80 GB version and does anyone have any experience of buying one off e-bay? The only benefit I can see is the cheaper blu-ray discs from Asia/US

Any advice appreciated

Hi scourge. If I was you I would always buy from a retailer manly due to the warrenty. What a game, was able to run it on full graphics settings, sky high framerate. Whatagame.

Really a work of art, graphics is the wrong word, its pretty much photorealistic, the modeling and movement of the characters is cinematic. I spent the whole weekend gobsmacked every timeI turned a corner. Single player game is as good as halflife, ifnot better. The storyline issolid and really keeps you going, but its the little bits that make it, the last scene on the bridge.... I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't finished it yet, butits brilliant. Personal taste I guess, I like realistic story lines, half life is a great game, I've finished it a few times, but I'm not into the whole sci-fi too much. I'm a big fan of BF2, flight sims (actual proper simulations, not the arcade ones, ones where getting the engines started takes 10 minutes), strategy games etc. I mean your talking to the guy who will happily spent 90 minutes moving his sub into a firing position, and manually calculate the firing solution (a lot of trig) of a torpedo in silent hunter 3. I don't mind sci-fi or fantasy games (neverwinter nights is ok) but I just cringe a little inside every time I see a bit of magic or something physically impossible.

Your right though, it is a little short. And the way your squad members can tend to walk you through some of the earlier levels is a bit annoying (get of my way of get shot in the back fool....) It's always been the way with COD games.Stick it on the hardest setting and its plenty hard enough though. Haven't played the multi-player yet. Just getting my broadband set up this week (moved house last week) getting the chorus 6mb connection,6mb/s for 46 yoyo an month, free connection and wireless router, anyone heard any good/bad things about their broadband?

For instance, he said, Guitar Hero games made more than $820m at retail, a record for any single franchise in any one year.

Mr Moledina added: "The Wii has re-proven the point that five to 95 year olds like playing games."

Mobile gaming is starting to be taken seriously
Veteran game designer Sid Meier will speak at the conference to shed light on "the key things you need to capture the interest of the public at large".

"We have Facebook here talking about how they have managed to get so many eyeballs playing games in such a short space of time," he said.

Developers and publishers were looking at this area very closely, he added.

But, he said, these new developments would not change everything. "Not all games are going to be casual. There's still going to be a huge market for the core base which drives everything."

One of the games aimed squarely at the core audience in 2008 is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which will be demoed at the week-long conference.

Gaining control

The event will also feature talk about the future of the human computer interface.

"Game worlds are a fairly complex universe, however the controllers we have are often a bit intimidating," said Mr Moledina.

Emotiv systems will be showing off its latest headset that uses sensors to detect brain waves to allow gamers to control characters and objects in a game world.

Israeli firm 3DV will be demonstrating its camera technology that can detect depth of movement.

Gamers can swing an imaginary golf club or interact with a 3D world just by using their hands and arms and without the need for a controller.

"A lot of people experiment with different ways to get into the game; to convert a fairly complex way that humans think and behave and have that map in a natural way to a complex game world," explained Mr Moledina.

The conference also features a strong mobile gaming element.

"We are seeing more and more big game companies take the space seriously. The sea change is that traditional game developers are less snarky about mobile and casual than they were because of the power of phones today."

Microsoft's head of Live services, John Schappert, will give one of the conference's keynotes, where he is expected to unveil new features for the Xbox Live service.

"Microsoft hasn't delivered a keynote for two years so it will be interesting to see what they have for us," said Mr Moledina.

Anyone looking for a game of COD4 for the PS3 with yours truly? Hooked on the online mode and looking for a game - the guys I normally play with are pretty much fed up with me beating the s**te out of them every time. I'm on the fifth Prestige Mode now . . . sweet.

Also, you can't beat snapping those Russian dogs' necks! smileys/biggrin.gif

Anyone managed to do that extra mission - the one on the plane - on veteran yet (one minute to do it)? Spent f**king hours trying to do it last week - and finally did on about the hundredth attempt.

Hotmail works absolutely fine on my web browser. Strange that it doesn't work on yours. Are you having problems with any other sites?

I have to say the PS3 is unreal. it's just brilliant. never really got hooked on gaming that much. just bought the odd game and got sick of them with PS2.

With PS3, I have finished Uncharted (brilliant), finished Call of Duty 4 (brilliant) still hooked on the online part. and FIFA 08 is the most addictable game. I only have the PS3 for the last 2 months. The only other games I have ever finished were scareface & one of the GTA's on the PS2 over about 3 years. that just shows how deascent the PS3 is.

Playing an interesting game called X3: Reunion at the moment. It's a space sim, quite slow paced and really detailed. In typical enough fashion you start off as a small fish in a big pond and have to do what you can to work your way up. There is a storyline and missions to it or else you can go around and do your own thing fighting whoever, or trading. It's pretty good. Lovely graphics too.

Yeah, I have that too, played it a lot before christmas. I like open ended games like that where you can do pretty much whatever the hell you want. Takes months to build up a decent sized empire though. Finished Crysis at the weekend, what a game.... If you have a top notch PC, buy it. The Uzi is useless in maps where long distance shooting happens all the time, though - and that's a lot of maps. The M4, G36C, MP5, P90 and the RPD are the best weapons - good at long and short distances. When you reach Rank 38 you can have two weapons - I go for the MP5 and RPD.

That and your much faster with a submachine gun, it makes you really hard to hit.If your on the right team you come out of each round with 900 to 1300 points depending on how many challenges you get. I'll use the P90 when I get that, larger mag.

I did up a PC with an E6300 in it for my brother last year and that goes like the clappers of hell so to say I'm a little excited about this is to say that Japan sometimes shakes a little due to platetectonics... I've had Asus boards in the past and have found them pretty reliable. Fingers crossed that this situation will remain unchanged.

I'm going to stick with the 7800GT GFX that I have at the moment (due to abject penury!). According to all sources, it's still a decent card (despite being two years old - best £200 I @@@@SPAN style="font-style: italic;">ever@@@@/SPAN> spent!). GFX upgrade will have to wait until the summer. I realise that there's a certain degree of CPU limitation as a result but given that that's the case with virtually every card commercially available once it comes down to the newer quad and dual core Intels, I'm not too worried. I'm just an amadαn for not ordering it two days ago as it would've arrived before the end of the week then...

Simba,

If you're getting a particular error message, googling it will normally find a fix.

If it's just a general "windows has encountered..." then check your system specification against the minimum requirements for the game, which should be on the pack. Though normally it will tell you during installation if there's a problem.

If you didn't have the room for it it wouldn't install.

What game is it? With some, you can opt for lower settings on graphics, sound etc on the options menu that will allow it to run on a lower spec.

If you have the right PC spec, it may be a software conflict and the googling should help.

Yeah, pcs can be a bit funny like that sometimes. Not to worry.
Few questions.
A. What game is it?
B. Whats parts have you got in your computer?
C. When was the last time you updated the drivers for your graphics card and sound card. An out of date driver (the software that runs a particular bit of hardware) is the most likely problem. Its easy to fix once you know what type of hardware it is.

Blue screen errors are often caused by drivers, or incompatability with hardware. Is there anything in particular that usually causes the crash, like the game showing video or loading to a different screen?

You may just need to update the drivers for your video card, which should be available from the manufacturer's web site.

Heh, don't worry, that's not the worst of them.

I was teaching the ol' fella how to use a computer a while back, and we had to start at the very basics, how to use a mouse. I had him sit down in front of the screen and made him watch what I was doing. "You see, you move the pointer over here, and double click on this little symbol. A double click is where click the left mouse button two times in rapid succession." I did it a few times and he just couldn't get it, each demonstration being interspersed with an, "Are you f**king watching me." I moved back a bit to show him one last time, because it was obvious he wasn't watching me. But he was. Instead of following the cursor on screen, he was trying to copy how far I moved the actual mouse. I gave up at that point.

He went on some course, 'Computers For the Terrified' and he's doing all right now. Spends all day looking up holidays, flights, and the weather.

So yeah, don't worry about incompetence. I also worked in a call centre for broadband, and most people understood the principle ideas, just not the language.

Righto, the part of the error that says STOP 0X0000etc iswhat you need. Write down the stop code and google it (or post it here). Its most likely a driver problem (drivers are little bits of software that tell everything in your pc how to work correctly).

The stop code should be able to point you in the direction of where the problem lies.

Only on Brigadier General on my first way round but what a game.

Prefer the M4 Carbine myself with a sniper rifle and claymores. I have a couple of spots I like to hide out and snipe from! My usre name is scourgio if anyone fancys a game. I'm usually on after 9pm

Gonna have an hour or so at it now. At commander level but dont want to bother with prestige mode (i'm lazy)

Feels like I've been at it a while, but I'm only at 2nd Lieutenant.

I'm allowing the challenges to drive weapon choice so that I get the bonus exp points to get promotions. Anything else I should be doing to speed the process up?

Mostly playing mercenary team deathmatch - find the free for all too hectic. Are there other game types where I'll increase the scoring rate?

Headquarters mode is what you want, if your looking for points. Good fun too.

Balla Boy

Right - I'll give that a go then.

This prestige mode lark... I know I'm a long way from worrying about it, but as far as I can gather you lose all your weapons, challenges and stuff and swap them for a badge.

Now, as you go back through, do you get to unlock new stuff or is it all the same stuff repeated over and over for ten turns?

And do you have an option not to do this?

I was wondering about that too. I don't think I really want to start from scratch again when I reach level 55

Balla Boy
25th-March-2008, 11:25
Exactly. If you're in the same games, with the same people, the same weapons etc etc I don't really see the point.

I heard something about all your weapons getting gold plate at the end of the first prestige level, but what happens for the other 9?

Drahcir
25th-March-2008, 11:42
Your weapons don't get gold plate. Only the desert eagle does. You can only get golden camouflage on one weapon in each section e.g. golden AK47 in the assault rifles and to do this you have to complete all challenges in that weapon category i.e. get 150 headshots with each weapon. If you do prestige mode you'll lose all these and have to start again. For me, CoD4 is finished, I'm bored with it, I'm eagerly awaiting Battlefield: Bad Company.

Micky,

I find you need a good position, the Iron Lungs perk helps as well.

Other than that depends what you're finding hard. Generally, find the target, hold your breath (L3) and aim slightly low.

It's very hard to hit moving targets, though. I find the pan on the scope doesn't move fast enough.

Oh, and don't find targets through the scope. Your peripheral vison will catch movement using the general view more easily, and then you zoom in with the scope.

Jesus, I obviously haven't experienced online COD4 enough. Love the sinlge campaign but tried it online and didn't last a second! Gave up on it pretty quickly. Love the single game though.

Anyone have the new Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 game? Thinking of getting it. Couldn't be arsed going through the whole thread to see if someone mentioned it.

Coming close to GTA release now, end of month. Could be a great weekend, Munster reaching the final (please god) and heading home to play the new GTA!

That makes sense to me - I'll try it. Decreases the chances of someone getting you from the side also.

I think my main problem is finding a goodposition (and not getting killed in the process by another sniper).

Do you have to go prone?

Balla Boy
10th-April-2008, 10:00
Depends what map you're on. I only use it on certain maps - bog, the one with the missile launchers, pipeline, the one on the container ship- you need something that gives you a good field of vision. On something like showdown it's a waste of time.

Be prepared to move fairly regularly - you will be spotted by another sniper eventually. Once you have a couple of kills, shift to another position.

Upper floors of buildings, roofs - anything with elevation is useful. The radar thing only shows position, not height, so it's not always easy to work out where someone is if they're not at ground level.

And if you have Claymores, set them behind you so that people don't sneak up on you.

The two positions I find best are behind the wall on Bog, and the bridge area on Wet Work.

Almost finished the 8th Prestige Mode now - Rank 45 (485/605 in total - about 15000th out of over a million and a half players isn't bad at all). Prestige Mode is exactly what is says on the tin - you start again, you get a better rank symbol; people know that you've started again x number of times. Another way of looking at is, why bother to carry on playing if you don't start again? If you want lots of points, then Search and Destroy is what you should play - over 1,000 points in most games (500 for killing people and 500 in bonuses). You have to be good though or else it's pointless.

GTA IV will be set in a redesigned Liberty City (the same as GTA III) - based on New York City and New Jersey. I can't wait for it personally. Also, apparantly after the initial loading sequence, there are no loading sequences during play.

Sony's PlayStation 3 games console has outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360 in Europe, according to figures released by Sony.

More than five million PS3s have been sold across the continent, Sony's David Reeves confirmed.

Speaking at a European PlayStation event in London, he said: "The numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand."

He said PlayStation 3 had been outselling the Xbox 360 since October last year. <!- E SF ->

"We have sold more PlayStation 3s throughout Europe than Xbox 360 even though they launched 16 months before us."

Mr Reeves, head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, also said 12 million PSP handheld consoles and 48 million PlayStation 2s had been sold in Europe.

Despite Sony's overhauling of Microsoft in Europe, both firms' sales are a long way behind the Nintendo Wii.

Price tag

Sony has managed to overtake Xbox 360 sales despite a much higher price tag.

The cheapest PS3 is available for £299, versus £159 for the Xbox 360.

"We have been consistently outselling our closest competitor [Xbox 360] since October 2007, even with the latest price point," said Mr Reeves.

Microsoft cut the price of Xbox 360 in March.

The figures will cheer Sony after a painful launch period for the machine, which saw delays, stock problems and criticism from gamers that early titles for the machine were below par.

Kaz Hirai, Sony's global head of PlayStation, said the first year of PS3 had been difficult.

Speaking at the London event, he said: "There were teething problems... and customers were a little underwhelmed by early games."

'No surprise'

He said Sony was going to promote the PS3 as a "multi-faceted interactive entertainment system" in the year ahead.

Games consultant Nick Parker said it was "no surprise" that PlayStation had overtaken Xbox in Europe.

"The PlayStation has held out remarkably well over the last 18 months despite the press slating it because of the price. People got behind the brand.

"The PS3 is far more mass market than 360, which has gone for traditional adult males - and that does not go down well in continental Europe."

He said consumers in Europe had "never gotten over the design ethos of the original Xbox."

Microsoft had set out to broaden the appeal of its titles "but never did come up with the goods", he went on.

The Xbox 360 was performing well in the UK but has a "problem on the continent".

He said PlayStation 3 had "every chance" of overtaking the Xbox 360 in its heartland of North America in the next two to three years.

Tried Smyths on Kinsale Rd. today and they were out of them and hadn't even the 40gb on sale itself unless you wanted to get it with two named games with it. Two places in Bandon were out aswell and one place in Skibb had them for sale seperately which came to €490...

EO,

Sonic & Mario Olympics is great fun for young and old especially as it allows up to 4 to play together (although you do need extra wii remotes).

Other bestgames I have played on it are Resident Evil IV (probably not suitable for 12yr old). Madden Football is class on the Wii with the whole arm throwing scenario. Big brain training is a bit of a laugh aswell in 2 player mode.

There is a lot of tripe out there. Pick up a Nintendo magazine and look at the reviews and don't take anything under 70% rating.

5th-June-2008, 10:07
cheers hamstring. We've got M&S at Olympics on DS and that was fun in itself so I think that'll be the next game on wii we pick up. Your comment about there's a lot of tripe is why I'm a bit wary - I've seen reviews of several games saying they just aren't worth the money.

omer. go to www.metacritic.com (http://www.metacritic.com), they have an exclusive wii section, as they do with all other consoles, that compiles reviews of games from a whole host of other websites, which gives a better overal opinion of a game.

Rucks suggestion is a good one.

In some cases on metacritic you can ignore, certainly, theworst reviewand in some cases the highest but in general the average rating it generates is a good indicator.

As a rule of thumba gameshould be scoring an average over 70.The top 20 list on the right is a good indicator. (Although Mario Olympics only scores a 67?!)

I don't see the attraction. Even virtual fishing provides an indoor alternative to an occasionally inclement hobby.

But Guitar Hero allows you to sit in your living room replicating the feeling of doing something that you could actually do while sat in exactly the same spot.

Am I missing something fundamental?

Drachir gave you the right instructions for that but the whole sequence is great. Go on youtube to watch the Raiden Vamp fight on top of Rex. Only got glimpses of it since the Gekko keep you fairly occupied! Thought Vamp and the battle with Liquid on Metal Gear Ray shortly after, were fairly easy. Looking back, Mantis was probably the toughest boss. Took me a while to figure her out.

Found the whole game epic, especially after feeling a bit let down by repetitiveness of the first game I got, AC. Mucky already mention how well the gameplay and scenes combine. Half tempted to resort back to the PS2 for MGS3(haven't played) but might have to make do with GTA IV.smileys/smile.gif

There are thousands, nay, tens of thousands of excellent guitar players out there. You'll never be as good as them.

But, how many have got 100% score on every song on maxium difficulty in GH? Achieve that, and you'll be truly unique.

(No, I've never played it. But I think the point stands, it's about being the best at something. I played one race in Crackdown on the 360 for about 4 hours straight, just to have the fastest time in the world for that race. Funny how competitive we people can be.)

The console is region free but some developers apparently encode their games to only be played on one region or another. It's no hassle buying them over the net from the US anyway, just have to wait maybe a week for delivery, which is fine by me. I'm in the US at the moment anyway so I'll pick up 2 or 3 more games before I go home.

Get his health down all the way and he will fall to the ground, has he's getting up, get him into a CQC hold, select the syringe in the items and press triangle.

I was thinking that alright, but how do you do the CQC?

Ive gotten him down and hes all dazed etc but wheni go near him andpress R1he just kicks me away. Do u have to be gunless when doing the cqc?

Im sure im pretty close to beating him, tis driving me mad smileys/mad.gif

You get a hold of him when he's getting back up while standing behind him. Found this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=-RThKlLADgM) for you.

Mantis was awkward but Otacon was a help.

First you use that syringe Naomi gave you by injecting yourself to stop Mantis making you miss any shots aimed at her. Then you start aiming for those dolls at either side of her while dodging shots from the ''dead'' enemies or Mantis herself. Stick to the very back of the room until she starts making Meryl shoot herself. Leg it for her and use the syringe in CQC when that happens. After that, just focus on the dolls. First the blue one which controls the dead. After enough shots it'll fall to the ground and you can get it. Then get the orange one(controls the living) the same way. Equip this one and shoot Mantis to get control of her. Then you have to tilt the controller up and down and Mantis gets thrown around like a rag doll and that's that.

the guy who was selling it accidentally left COD4 in the drive, so happy days. Briefly had a go of the online, and died lots.

What a clown. Still, COD5 isn't too far away.

I'm up to about 15,000 in the world on COD4 online out of over two and a half million - I really need to get another game. I play on Old School mode (you can jump higher) a lot of the time and glitch my way out of a lot of maps, or up on top of buildings that I'm not supposed to go on, and just waste people with a Sniper. Love glitching.

Anyone else notice how crap GTA IV was after you completed the missions? Feck all to do, unlike San Andreas.

Would you call it cheating? I see it as taking advantage of faults in the game.

The online gets boring after about five minutes. Took me less than a day to complete the story - but I did get taxis everywhere between missions to speed things up a bit.

But why rush to complete the story? It's the journey more so than the destination that counts in GTA. Enjoy the ride and take your time.

The online part is good. The racing is a bit frustrating though. Sometimes bad drivers are at a disadvantage eg you're slowing down to corner and somebody uses your car as a brake and if you closing in on somebody ahead of you sometimes they are all over the place and knocking down poles which you then drive over and end up upside down in the car.

I don't get how they can release a new golf game every year? What's the difference between the games each year? Surely the gameplay doesn't change that much?

I'm playing Rainbow Six: Las Vegas 2 at the moment. Not bad, but way too similar to the first game. Still enjoyable though, acting as team leader of a small group of counter terrorists, and dictating the plan, instead of just running around blindly shooting all the time.

I think Tiger Woods 09 is 1080p as opposed to 08 which was only 720
