No HEC semi-final at Marcel-Michelin
24th January 2012 13:01
Fiery supporters:
Clermont have confirmed that they will not be able to play their potential Heineken Cup semi-final at their fortress at Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin.
Les Jaunards have arguably the most impressive home record of any team in Europe having not lost at Marcel Michelin in any competition since November 2009.
The Pool Four winners will travel to Saracens for a tough quarter-final but considering that they had the better of the English champions both home and away last year, qualification for the last four is a realistic ambition.
But l'ASMCA's fiery supporters, led the Ultras Vulcans, will have to hit the road if their side make the semi-finals since the town of Clermont-Ferrand and it's stadium do not have the infrastructures necessary to accommodate such an event according to the tournament organisers, the ERC.
"We've known all along," team manager Jean-Marc Lhermet told Midi Olympique.
"If we had a home quarter-final, we would have hosted it at Michelin. But for the semi-finals, the ERC designates the venue in consultation with the club concerned. It's not clearly explained in the rules but we know that the Parc des sports Marcel-Michelin does not suffice."
Nearby Lyon, which has a 40 000-seater stadium and an international airport is the most likely candidate...assuming Clermont can beat Saracens. One step at a time.
