Chris Ashton walks out on Northampton after row with director of rugby Jim Mallinder Chris Ashton’s tempestuous recent relationship with Northampton appears to have reached breaking point after the England wing reportedly stormed out of the club following a training ground argument with the club’s director of rugby, Jim Mallinder. http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02113/chris-ashton_2113453b.jpg Let me go: Northampton wing Chris Ashton is on the brink of a move to Saracens Photo: GETTY IMAGES

The Daily Telegraph also understands that Ashton has been dropped for Saints’ sell-out Heineken Cup match against Munster at Milton Keynes on Saturday, despite Mallinder insisting that he would field his strongest available side for such a prestigious match.

It now looks likely that Ashton has played his last match for Northampton. Saracens are expected to unveil him as their major new signing next week, as soon as they have concluded their Heineken Cup pool matches.

The former Wigan rugby league wing is likely to seal a three-year contract believed to be worth in the region of £250,000 a year.

It is understood Wednesday’s bust-up occurred directly after Ashton told Northampton and Mallinder of his final decision regarding Saracens. As recently as the Premiership match against Harlequins on Jan 6, Ashton was insisting that no deal had been done and that he was still making his mind up.

However, last weekend Saracens consultant Brendan Venter, talking in South Africa, said there would probably be an announcement “in the next couple of weeks”.

Ashton had let it be known privately that he wanted everything to be settled before the start of the Six Nations.
As England’s campaign effectively starts on Monday, when the squad meet in camp at the West Park club in Leeds, a long and sometimes bitter saga was always likely to come to a head this week, especially with Mallinder insisting that at Northampton he wanted only players who were fully committed to the Premiership club.
The timing of Ashton’s announcement will have infuriated the Saints, who still have a very slim chance of qualifying for the Heineken Cup quarter-finals.
While they regard that outcome as near impossible, a win of any sort against Munster would almost certainly see them move through to the knockout stages of the Amlin Challenge Cup.
Young wing Jamie Elliott looks likely to get the nod ahead of Ashton, who has been heavily linked with Saracens since November. Ashton’s absence from Saturday’s match means he will now be unable to participate in a top-flight match before England’s opener against Scotland at Murrayfield on Feb 4.
Already chronically short of rugby after his one-month ban for tackling Alesana Tuilagi by his hair during Northampton’s Premiership match against Leicester early in December, Ashton has played in just two games – against Harlequins and then Scarlets last week. Match fitness is beginning to become a real issue.
Ashton, whose Northampton contract runs out at the end of May, is perfectly entitled to seek employment wherever he wants for next season, but there has been real acrimony ever since allegations surfaced in November that Ashton had been approached by Saracens ahead of the transfer window, which started on Jan 1.
Saracens strenuously deny allegations of an illegal early approach, but the split between Ashton and Northampton intensified after all their other top England players – Ben Foden, Tom Wood, Dylan Hartley and Courtney Lawes – signed on for contract extensions in quick succession before Christmas.
At one stage an exasperated Mallinder reported that Ashton and his representatives were refusing to talk about the moving or staying, and from that moment the relationship looked beyond repair.

He will not be involved with England by the end of the 6 nations and I was saying that a long time ago.

Sort of chap even a mother couldn't love. Players come and go, and I am sure there are two sides to this story, but throwing the toys out of the pram is just a no-non for a supposedly professional player. Would certainly set the alarm bells ringing if you were the club supposed to be signing him...

I will add that obviously I'm not wishing a fatal contagious disease on anyone! Just a bit of tongue in cheek, but seriously they're catching up with us with players out. Well no...no one has that many out

Sounds like he won't be doing much before the rest of this season (club wise).

From hero to zero, what gets me is that Saracens thrive on a very squad bond. They really appear to genuinely enjoy each others company which is one of the reasons they were glad that 'Orange' Henson went off to Toulon. I bet he'll upset the applecart there as well.

I dislike Ashton more than most, as anyone who had the misfortune of being near me in the north terrace for round 1 knows only too well, but seriously I think this looks worse on Mallinder than Ashton

Ashton is a grade A tit for want of a better word. Hopefully Mallinder gets the gig for England and reflects that a player who walks out on their coach at club level isn't worth looking at for international duty. I'd also like to add that hopefully Mallinder holds the England coach job until Ashton retires.

Dont think he will. He isnt the tosser he's made out to be. He's no worse on the pitch then most of our lads. Off the pitch supposed to be a decent chap. Lets face it he wasnt one of the instigators of the english world cup collapse and actually had a decent tournament compared to most.

He's not the first professional rugby player to improve his contract by moving. Its a short career and players are entitled to make the most of it in my view. Mallinder has been angling for this row for a while and he's got it which I think Northampton wanted. Mallinder has lessened their chances of beating Munster by 20% at the weekend.

Ashton is very close to being a world class wing in my view. I'd love to have him in our side. runs super lines and isnt content to hang around the wing for 3 passes a game like many wingers.

Needs a quite word in his ear from Lancaster but I dont think he's half as bad as some of th other englisg rugby players like haskell and co.

To me though, this smacks of Cheika's outburst and subsequent treatment of Felix when he told him he was leaving!!

If I were the rfu, I'd run a mile from Mallinder after this!! International management is as much about man management as anything else, Mallinder appears to have the man management skills of a rusty shovel

Players want the best players around them, Saracens players will be happy as it improves their team (except the man who loses his place) and in turn chances of winning something.

The Tongahuia debacle was only a short while ago also, whether it's Mallinder or others fault, they should be extracting as much value as they can for the rest of the season not throwing the toys out of the pram.

Ashton was specifically told by Lurch to stop doing his stupid dive and he didn't just refuse, he rubbed the coaches nose in it in front of millions. I am convinced that a lot of England's disciplinary problems stem from Ashton's behaivour. I will give you he doesn't appear to be on the Haskell, Armitage level but his snoop cocking gave those pr*cks the licence they needed. The man appears to have no respect for his team mates, the opposition (although he did seem to have respectful words with ROG after the 41 phase miracle I grant you) and the game of rugby itself. When asked in an interview what his deceased father would say about his dive he acknowledged that he would not approve and would tell him to stop and yet the fella carrys on doing it.....

Ashton isn't a bad player, certainly compared with some of the English mediocrity that we see in white shirts (Haskell, Croft, Youngs).

However he isn't even close to being world class.

Munster and Ireland play Keith Earls at 11 consistently = Earls is a better winger than Ashton. Ashton's international try-scoring record [15 tries in 18 starts] looks great, but look at the opposition: 4 against Italy, 3 against Rumania, 2 against Georgia. Outside of those games, it's 6 tries in 15 starts ... and he's been scoreless in 11 of those 15 games.

England have used him relatively well, it should be said ... better than Ireland have used Earls, for the most part. On the other hand, can you imagine Ashton even being tried at centre or fullback? Earls has way more football ability, a smidgin less pace and is just as good a finisher [in my opinion].

Pick Earls on the wing for province and country, watch him score loads of tries. Pick him in the centre, watch him pass behind people. This is a no-brainer for me.

Agree with plastic p's point that Ashton certainly does appear to be a cock on the pitch, whatever about his behaviour off it. The fact that he congratulated ROG that time seems to have been a mere blip on the graph ....

I'm coming to the same conclusion. Tommy Bowe can finish, but has also always been a great try-maker. Trimble has a bit of a bludgeon about him; Earls is a rapier, and a finisher with a nose for the try-line. You need one of each as your wingers. I'd move Bowe to 13, where he has played reasonably often, and with some efficiency, for the Os.
