New Zealanders are up in arms after it was revealed that
England will wear an all-black strip at this year's World
Cup.

England's new jersey will officially be unveiled by the
team's apparel sponsor Nike on August 1 and the side will
wear it in their opening match against Argentina in Dunedin
on September 10.

However, several prominent Kiwis have criticised the
decision to copy the All Blacks jersey, which has a 127-
year history.

Rugby commentator Keith Quinn is one person to voice his
dissatisfaction with England's plans.

"Of all the colours in the rainbow, why would they choose
the colour of the host nation?" he told the Dominion Post.

"They are thumbing their noses at a New Zealand tradition.
It's bizarre."

Quinn said he suspected that jersey sales were behind
England's decision.

"They will often switch jerseys so people have to buy the
new colour," he explained.

He said the New Zealand public would be unhappy.

"I don't think they will throw things, but they will be
scornful of England coming into our territory wearing
black," Quinn added.

New Zealand prime minister John Key was also critical of
England's choice.

"I think it's a bunch of wannabes actually, there's only one
team that wears black with pride and that's the All Blacks,"
he told 3news.co.nz.

Meanwhile, All Blacks captain Richie McCaw was diplomatic
when asked for his opinion.

"People play games I suppose about why they are doing
these things, but not a biggie really," he said.

England's new kit will also feature ancient Maori symbols
and decorations which upsets Professor Ranginui Walker,
All Black supporter and Maori affairs political commentator.

"One would think that Maori designs should have a
protection of some kind because it's an intellectual property
design," he said.

However, New Zealand Rugby CEO Martin Sneddon said
the England Rugby Football Union did get permission from
the New Zealand Rugby Union on condition that they did
not wear the strip if they played against the All Blacks.

"The All Blacks should take it as a compliment to them,
ourselves, as a country believe in the power of the jersey,
the power of the black, and maybe that is what England is
trying to get their hands on," Sneddon sai

Fifty odd days before the RWC and today I have lost patience with the precious wingeing of elements of the New Zealand rugby community.

It is a jersey for goodness sake. Grow up and get on with it.

Next they'll be bleating about how some opponents aren't respectful enough of the haka because they don't s**te themselves properly whilst facing it.

For every decent New Zealander involved in rugby there's a plumhead with a microphone or keyboard getting all the attention.

In spite of all their amazing players and the pleasure they give lovers of the game when they play, I hope they choke again.

Fixed that

The English are up in arms after it was revealed that
New Zealand will wear an all-white strip at this year's World
Cup.

New Zealand's new jersey will officially be unveiled by the
team's apparel sponsor Adidas on August 1 and the side will
wear it in their opening match.

However, several prominent Brits have criticised the
decision to copy the White English Jersey, which has a 140-
year history.

Rugby commentator Eddie Butler is one person to voice his
dissatisfaction with the Kiwis' plans even though he's
not actually english, but probably wishes he was.

"Of all the colours in the rainbow, why would they choose
the colour of the founders of Rugby Union.

"They are thumbing their noses at an RFU tradition.
It's bizarre. What's next? A singapore Rose?"

Eddie said he suspected that jersey sales were slightly behind
the Kiwi decision. They've only sold several million the last couple years.

"They will often switch jerseys so people have to buy the
new colour," he explained.

He said the English public would be unhappy.

"I don't think they will throw things, but they will be
scornful of New Zealand wearing white and may say some
unpleasant things" Butler added.

Queen Elizabeth was also critical of
the Kiwi choice.

"I think it's a bunch of wannabes actually, there's only one
team that wears white with pride. I am their Queen and it would have
been proper to ask my permission before making such a ill thought out and
disrespectfull decision. Savages!"

Meanwhile, Former England captain Steve Borthwick was diplomatic
when asked for his opinion.

"People play games I suppose about why they are doing
these things, I don't normally understand them, So f**k it" he said.

New Zealand's new kit will also continue to feature the Silver Fern symbol,
an important Anglo Saxon and Druid symbol - But no one cares.

It's not like how the Nazis stole the swastika symbol from ancient cultures -
Now no one can wear one anymore. Kind of like how sometimes it's uncomfortable
for the Irish to wear safety orange...

However, since John Steele was sacked and England have no CEO - in fairness to the
Kiwis - I gues they thought they could just sneek this one past everyone without permission.

"England should take it as a compliment to them,
ourselves, as a country believe in the power of the jersey,
the power of the white. Tennis, doctors, nurses, eerie ghosts, the milk man, the butcher -
and maybe that is what the Kiwi's are trying to get their hands on"...said some tosser and oxygen thief...

I didnt want to see the Crusaders beat the Reds, due to the
NZ rugby "gods", giving out for rule changes, hosting the
world cup, who can play (Fijian squad members, and now over
another team wearing black. Give my head peace. I hope
that NZ rugby turns into English international football team,
only to ever build itself up for a greater fall.

I see them sneaky South Africans are going wear green this

It's their party and they own the ball. They won't have far to travel to
take that ball home with them.

On the flip side you have to admire the English, in usual brash style
they get their biggest perceived contenders dander up. Storm in a
teacup but I'd wager the kiwis will do all they can to nurture a siege
mentality. They've tried dominating confidence and it failed them.

I think the black jersey is a smart move; it'll get 'under their
<NZ> skin', and start taking the 'exclusivity' of the allblack
brand away. It's been said many times, that we shouldn't
even refer to them as 'the all blacks' ; rather 'new zealand' ...
They get a big mental edge when people/teams have this
expectation that the mighty ALL BLACKS are playing. Yeah
they're excellent, but they are beatable, and every team
going into the world cup needs to have that mentality.

Stuff the All Blacks and their tantrums but New Zealand is not the All Blacks. One of the good things will be that the revenue from the world cup will help the localities re build after what they have suffered.

The kiwis weren't even the first side to wear an all black
kit, Neath RFC were. The following is shamelessly lifted
from Wiki: "The club's nickname, 'The Welsh All Blacks',
comes from their iconic strip of black jersey, shorts and
socks with a white Maltese cross. The origin of the team
colours is not known for sure. Origally the club's players
represented the team in various dark kits and the Maltese
cross was introduced by one of their players, thought to
have been E.C. Moxham, "to break the monotony". It is
believed that the strip was later switched to the pure black
kit as a mark of respect to player Dick Gordon, who died
from injuries sustained on the field of play against Bridgend
RFC in 1880."

Whereas the NZRFU wasn't formed until 1892 and the kiwis'
all black kit wasn't worn until 1905, from wiki again: "The
team's early uniforms consisted of a black jersey with a
silver fern and white knickerbockers. By their 1905 tour
New Zealand were wearing all black, except for the silver
fern, and their All Black name dates from this time. A
representative New Zealand team, since referred to as the
Originals, first toured Britain in 1905. Reference to the
team by the name "All Blacks" first appeared during this
tour when, according to team member Billy Wallace, a
London newspaper reported that the New Zealanders
played as if they were "all backs".Wallace claimed that
because of a typographical error, subsequent references
were to "All Blacks". This may be a myth, as the name also
describes their playing uniform of black shirts, shorts and
socks."

So it could be argued that the Kiwis are bunch of thieving
pr**ks who nicked the all black kit idea from Neath. smileys/smile.gif

Yet its ok for NZ to wear white shirts when their colours clash with Scotland and France! I thought England were wearing this kit against the Argentinians only so there was no chance of a colour clash at glance. It actually makes sence to me.

England to wear black at RWC

7/16/2011
By Australian Associated Press

England rugby bosses have angered World Cup hosts New
Zealand by revealing they will wear an all-black kit for their
opening match against Argentina.

Although England usually play in white, their apparel
sponsor Nike are due to unveil a new away kit on August 1
and the English Rugby Football Union (RFU) on Friday
confirmed Martin Johnson's team would wear the all-black
strip for their opening pool match against Argentina in
Dunedin on September 10.

The decision to copy New Zealand's iconic All Black jersey,
which has a 127-year history, has already triggered a
furious response from the tournament hosts.

Rugby traditionalists in New Zealand see the cheeky
marketing ploy as an insult to the All Blacks' rich tradition
and even the country's Prime Minister John Key has
criticised the decision.

New Zealand's famous All Black kit is made by adidas, who
are long-standing rivals of Nike in the sportswear market.

Even England's World Cup training gear has a Kiwi twist,
with a red rose crest on the shirt surrounded by ancient
Maori symbols and decorations.

However, the RFU insist there is no desire to provoke the
Kiwis.

"England are obliged by the Rugby World Cup participation
agreement to have a change strip," an RFU spokesperson
said.

"We have worked with Nike on producing a shirt that
complies with Rugby World Cup and International Rugby
Board regulations and, fully aware of the significance of a
black shirt to New Zealand's players and population as a
whole, we have fully consulted with the NZRU, who
confirmed they had no issues.

"England will therefore wear the black change shirt against
Argentina at the Otago Stadium in Dunedin on September
10 due to a clash with the light blue and white of the
Pumas. They will wear their white home shirt in their other
World Cup pool matches.

"We believe the black shirt will be very popular with
supporters as previous change shirts, such as purple and
anthracite in November 2009 and 2010 respectively, have
been."

It is understood the controversial kit will be used for the
first time against Wales at Twickenham on August 6 and
then in the return match in Cardiff the following weekend.

The kit will also be worn in Dublin for England's last warm-
up game against Ireland at Lansdowne Road on August
27.

I have moved to NZ at the beginning of the year and they are always talking themselves up about their rugby. When they realise I am Irish they ridicule our chances.

I rile them up saying that Ireland will win the world cup by beating the All Blacks in the final. When they tell me 'I dont think that will hapen' I quickly reply 'Dont you think the All Blacks will make the final????' Shuts them up for a minute while they are thinking of a reply.

They are already giving out about the Tri Nations about the other southern hep teams saving their players and it was reported here that they were planning to lodge an official complaint etc - then I read that Henry was now going to rest his vetern players after a long season.

I never thought I would say this but 'Good on you England' for stirring it up here a bit

I hope / pray / wishfor 3 things (in order):

1 - Ireland win the world cup (I did say wish / pray etc)

2 - Ireland go further in the competition than NZ

3 - A northern Hemisphere team win the world cup

Cant wait till the Irish invade in under 2 months

Well I have to say if the world cup was in Ireland and England decided to wear a green kit with celtic lettering I wouldn't be too impressed. Comes across as a bit disrespectful to the host nation on the reason of a blatant attempt to cash in on the all blacks brand.

I don't think the new zealanders are actually making that big a deal of this, so the comments calling them arrogant aren't warranted. The vibe I'm getting is they're disappointed with it, feel its slightly disrespectful and entirely unnecessary. I think thats fair.

On one hand they are big bad All Blacks scared of

They cry foul play when the opposition lie on the ball or in

does it. Got it.

They change the rules of rugby to suit themselves to a
f**king tee and suspend any ref that doesnt bend over to

And now this??? 127 year history my hole. Great team,
great tradition la la la...I am not a fan of England and quite
frankly want to see Johnno's boys get a the Lansdowne

I am ignoring what ye are saying about the way they are reffed and other
more tangiable things that affect results against them.

Yes they are as precious as f**k but some of the things the other

heaven or stare at them for ages fine, but that stunt the welsh did
telling them to do the haka in the tunnel was just matching pettyness
with even with a pettyness ten times worse.

The french more or less admitted one of the reasons they gave up their
national colours and switched to navy, was so the ABs had to wear
grey/white if they played each other. Before ye say it worked , i
remind ye of the ass kicking the french got in marseille two years ago
against the ABs wearing white.

This black jersey thing is blatant publicity stunt by the rfu to sell
shirts, people like black jerseys fine but the fact they went with black
shorts was definitely a "see if we get a reaction move". The welsh and
the english have had black jerseys with different shorts before and no deal was made of it.

You dont see the Saffas and the Aussies unions trying that sort of crap and they put it up to them the most.

The Welsh did not tell them to do the haka in the tunnel. They wanted to respond to the haka, which is an accepted part of the tradition, and to do so by singing their own anthem in their own ground. So far, so reasonable - or so you might think. But upon hearing that they wouldn't be performing the final act of the pre-match entertainment, the precious kiwi tw*ts threw their toys out of the pram and decided off their own bat to perform the haka in their own dressing room.

New Zealand have a great rugby team and superb skills all over the pitch. But when it comes to off-pitch matters they behave like a bunch of spoilt children, which over the years has turned me for one from an admirer into a temporary supporter of any team that's playing them - including England ffs.

Sing bread of heaven or stare at them for ages fine, but that stunt the welsh did telling them to do the haka in the tunnel was just matching pettyness with even with a pettyness ten times worse.

Mr Chips synopsis is correct on this on popper..... they decided to sing in the tunnel/dressing room themselves because they were not the last "act"....

Welsh are home ..they can sing their anthem last if they like....

Stand corrected guys , sorry. I was about to say i prefer the do nothing irish approach but i forgot about that tool shouting over the pa in croke park in 2008 ( the jig incident is a long time ago)
Other than the aussies playing matilda over the pa like the do for every match, they pretty much let them have their dance and get on with it.

And now, that well known Rugby tipster, Jonah Lomu (tipped Ireland as dark horses for the RWC in case you hadn't heard) has waded into the debate smileys/rolleyes.gif
