Passed it on the way to mass tonight with my eight year old as we heard on the radio why the police had turned us back. Thankfully, they appear to have got the 19 year old culprit but what is the country coming to? I agree, what were the parents doing? I live in the area and know that our Celtic Tiger, liberal parenting, is gone beyond irresponsible. When we, Irish, aren't prepared to take responsiblity for our actions how can we expect our youth to act differently?
At the end of the day a 12 year old, just finished PRIMARY SCHOOL has been murdered, how much does she know about wrong and right. It is obvious that Irishsociety which promotes zero responsiblity, especially amongst adults is to blame.
May sherest in peace and if I had one wish it is that both the perpetrator and those charged with his care are made to suffer something approaching what that young girls family face for the rest of their lives.

While I know not all the fact are in, on the 10.00 news last night it was claimed, that she was out with friends and had come home as agreedwith her parents, she asked could she just go back out and would be back in a few minutes, when she didn't return at the agreed time parents called her mobileand then the cop's

the girl should not have been out...having said that I took my girl to Irish Dancing at the Anchor last week-we didnt leave till 11.30pm...ok she wasnt on her own.
The real question here is why would anyone kill a 12 year old girl? its f**king weird. What sort of people have we got on our doorsteps? and its not just at night is it? the Bulger killing still gives me nightmares.
I dont know if the 19 year old is guilty or not or has presented himself as a witness, but if he did do it then to my mind he has to be sent to Saudi for trial and punishment

Awful stuff but it is wise to wait for the post mortem and Garda investigation before appointing oneself as judge and jury.

I was watching a programme about thailand they have it right over there, long jail time is the answer and 20 to a room , if you kill a person in Ireland what are you out in ? if you get caught with 5000 ectasy tablets in thailand you get 50 years without probation.
Or in California the 3 strikes and your out rule, we have fellas committing 50 crimes and they still do a small bit of time and out the go to re offend .
Nuts

It's been happening in Limerick for years. I have a friend working that deals with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who told me that the 12 year olds would be suffering serious withdrawal symptoms from recreational drugs and booze having been out into the early hours of the morning. When I asked about the parents he said that they were in the same state.
I am making no assumptions about this case. I am just commenting on what goes on.
It is a tragedy for all concerned.

I think the Robert Holohan case showed the danger of
jumping to conclusions, there's any number of ways this
tragedy could have occurred.

True. The fact that a 19 year old presented himself at a station would point to it being something other than cold blooded murder (I'm not excusing anything).
Wait for full details before making final judgement.

Man (1smileys/cool.gif for court over murder of Dublin schoolgirl
CONOR LALLY, Crime Correspondent, and STEPHEN MANGAN
An 18 year-old man is expected in court this morning charged in connection with the murder of 12-year-old Michaela Davis.
Michaela's body was found by a man walking his dog on Saturday afternoon.
She had been strangled and her partially clothed body dumped in hedging and undergrowth on the banks of the Royal Canal close to her home in Porterstown, west Dublin.
A postmortem revealed she had also sustained head injuries.
Gardaí believe Michaela, who started secondary school last week, had recently befriended a group of teenagers much older than her from the local area.
One line of investigation is that the teenage boys and young men had tried to involve her in sexually abusive behaviour, possibly on the promise of rewards such as cigarettes and alcohol.
A man presented himself to gardaí at Blanchardstown Garda station with his father at 8pm on Saturday and was arrested for questioning.
The investigation is fixed on a definite line of inquiry and is said to be progressing “very well”. The teenager was being questioned under suspicion of assault but the investigation is a full murder inquiry.
Michaela was a first-year student at Luttrellstown Community College in Blanchardstown, having attended her first classes last Wednesday.
She was out with friends in the area close to her home on Friday evening and returned home that night. However, just after midnight she told her parents, Brendan and Deirdre, she was going out to meet a friend, saying she would not be long.
When she failed to return home by 2.30am her parents became concerned and contacted gardaí. A major Garda search operation was put in place in the area which involved the Garda helicopter.
Gardaí also called to the homes of some of Michaela’s friends in the hope she might be with one of them or they might have information as to her whereabouts.
The Garda investigation continued throughout Saturday. At around 3.50pm an elderly man out walking his dog on the banks of the Royal Canal, less than a kilometre from Michaela’s home, saw a leg sticking out of bushes on a steep bank between the rail line and a walkway along the canal.
He rang gardaí and when they arrived at the scene minutes later they found Michaela’s body. The area was sealed off and the State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a preliminary examination at the scene on Saturday night.
The girl’s body was then removed and a full postmortem carried out yesterday found that Michaela had been strangled.
Gardaí are working on the theory that Michaela left her house in the early hours of Saturday to meet somebody. It is not clear if she was killed where she was found but gardaí found her bicycle at a second location, close to where her body was discovered.
Supt Gilligan said it was a very difficult time for the victim’s family, friends and the local community but reassured residents in the Dublin suburb that the attack was an isolated incident.
He said anybody with information should contact the Gardaí. “Small pieces of information sometimes can assist us with a larger investigation,” he added
