An old story.
The Cookies had qualified for both Munster Junior and Senior Cup finals (back a few years).
Jimmy, a lifelong stalwart supporter, got dressed on the Saturday to see his beloved team play the senior match. Grey slacks freshly pressed, crisp white shirt, and club tie and blazer. He proudly looked at himself in the mirror and said to his wife "I'm off out now to see Young Munsters in the cup final". She smiled.
He returned at 4am, scuttered.
Jimmy got up at midday on the Sunday, feeling grim. He cleaned up & dressed again. Thankfully the wife had got ironed a fresh shirt and cleaned his pants, blazer and tie. He looked at her and said "I'm off out now to see Young Munsters in the cup final". She smiled.
He returned at 5am, polluted.
One of the finals was a draw and a replay was scheduled for the following weekend.
Jimmy preened himself for the third time in 8 days. He looked proud and dapper. He repeated the phrase he'd used twice the previous weekend. The wife smiled knowingly. She quipped "Jimmy, I'm beginning to think you loves Young Munsters more than you loves me".
He replied quick as a flash "I loves Garryowen more than I loves you".
Explains it allsmileys/lol.gif

It's usually the most recentlysuccessful or best team that would be leading in this type of poll.I think it just shows how much people dislike Garryowen that they are so far ahead of Shannon.
Still I always thought Crescent were worse.

A lot of people think Garryowen supporters are not rugby lovers at all but just middle class people supporting them for social reasons. There's a bit of truth in that but there's some inverted snobbery too and it is mostly inaccurate. There was a funny story about Garryowen being a tribe from St Mary's in Dublin who got lost on their way back from Cork and ended up settling in Dooradoyle.A lot of this is the same as some of the crap you hear fom Munster fans about Leinster fans, that they are all rich D4 pr!cks etc.Again some truth but mostly inaccurate.
Now Crescent on the other hand............

I remember going to Dooradoyle for the Shannon-Garryowen match and there was some unbelievable cars parked inside the club gates so maybe theres a bit of truth in that.

Oh there is a bit of truth but I know plenty of Garryowen supporters who wouldn't have fancy cars etc.I also people of wealth who moved to Limerick and lo and behold became Garryowen supporters so it takes all kinds. You'd see nice cars atall of the grounds, even the Killing Fields.smileys/biggrin.gif

Limerick club rugby is very competitive with rivalries going back 100+ years. Dislike may develop from slights real or imagined over the years. The common relation is one of mutual respect, hatred is usually reserved for those who never played rugby in the first place.
Lads we're stuck on 58.1%, keep the votes coming.

must admit my hatred for bohs comes from going to college in UL. played with most of the players and they're actually sound guys, its the guys at the top that bug me. They tried to merge the college team a few years back so bohs would represent UL in the intervarsities tournament. i.e. If u were a student playing with ur local club and wanted to play intervarsity rugby (a much higher level to most local clubs and more enjoyable), u would have to sign with bohs and leave ur home club. Thankfully, they were outvoted in the AGM!!! smileys/biggrin.gif

Maybe it's because in the late 90's the club Bohemians merged with UL creating a new club called UL Bohemian and as an aside to that merger was joint presidents, one from the old club Bohs and one from UL?
If my memory serves me right, there was a lot of talk about club mergers back then, around Limerick Boh's & Crescent, Richmond & Mary's, quite a few around the country, NIFC merged with Queens (I think and became Harlequins) Buccaneers was a merger of Athlone and someone else(can't remember who)
I think the reasoning behind the Bohs merger was Boh's wanted to start up an academy, because long term it was better to develop your own players rather than trying to attract them from other clubs, which was the way things were done back then. Needless to say that's an expensive enterprise. UL wanted a rugby program that could rival the likes of UCD,Trinity and UCC, but didn't want to put the time and money into developing it.... so the merger got UL a ready made team operating in the senior leagues and Boh's got use of the facilities for the academy and the rest is history as the man say's!! I'm open to correction in all of this, but I think I have the main points covered!smileys/smile.gif

I am quite aware of the merger that happened, I was against it at the time on the grounds that the University is paid for by the Tax payer and one club should not have exclusive access to it and its facilities particuarly a club who have more than adequate funds.

The merger didn't get UL anything. Its effectively a club team with the use of one of the best sports facilities in the country.
I was involved in trying to stop the merger when I was in U.L. The merger was pushed on the UL Rugby Team by a number of guys pushing the Boh's agenda. If you look back at when the deal was announced, it was mid summer when the students were not around. When we tried to block it, Dave Maghedy said they wanted a top rugby team for the University but from what I hear, he's since refrained from taking a similar approach with mergers for any of the othercollege sportsteams as it was such a balls up!

Fair enough, thought you were asking why didn't UL merge with Richmond who are in closer proximity! No skin off my nose, I've no particular like or dislike for either club... have friends in both as it happens!
I don't think Bohs have exclusive rights to it though as you make out, I've seen Shannon,Thomond,Young Munster &Crescent teams out in UL training! Maybe the academy gets some preferential treatment, but then again anyone in the academy is also a UL student as far as I knowand would probably be entitled to a bit of preferential treatment anyway as far as facilities go?

Bohs don't have exclusive access to it, many Limerick clubs regularly use the Arena.
The adequate funds idea is a bit ironic, the decision to merge was partly based on the fact that Bohs didn't have the money or standing to compete with the bigger Limerick clubs and needed an incentive to offer players who would otherwise have considered a move elsewhere. Munster and Irish rugby will reap the benefits of the work put in at underage levels by people in the club in the coming years.

The difference is that the other clubs have to pay for these facilities while you andI are paying for UL Bohs through our taxes. In relation to under age how many of their acadamy played with Bohs?

It's the same with all University teams, the disadvantage of losing many of your players before their mid-20s is somewhat made up for by the access to top class facilities and ability to attract players through scholarship programmes. As far as I know other clubs have subsidised access to the Arena also, although I'm not sure about that.
I'd say the academy is split fairly evenly between local underage players and those brought in from elsewhere to attend the college, although if it does lean one way it's probably towards locals given the volume of young lads out training with Bohs on a weekend.

Young Munster for me I'd have to say
Why?
Played them mostly at underage, they always seemed to more interested in fighting than playing rugby for whatever reason. I have nothing against clubs being tough but thats not what they were. It wouldn't even be a case of it being 100% the fault of young lads cause there was always some old lunatic manager on the sideline goading them on. I've never seen that with any other club and I've played in 3 provinces. And yes I know its Rugby not basketball etc. etc.!

Thats a bit of a sweeping statement. I've been involved with underage rugby for a while now and have seen some coaches at the "nicer" clubs encouraging players to all kinds of things specially against the so called tougher clubs. I am a Young Munster manand proud of it. smileys/biggrin.gif

Thats a bit of a sweeping statement. I've been involved with underage rugby for a while now and have seen some coaches at the "nicer" clubs encouraging players to all kinds of things specially against the so called tougher clubs. I am a Young Munster manand proud of it. smileys/biggrin.gif
I'm sure they do. you're involved underage, maybe its a bit different now? I don't get the sweeping statement part. Young Munster just spring to mind because I've had more than one match abandoned against them (3)! playing for 2 different clubs

Buccaneers was a merger of Athlone and someone else(can't
remember who)
Athlone and Ballinasloe.
Ballinasloe pulled out of the merger in 2005 though and are back going
it alone.

I think the ballinasloe lads got sick of all the money they were raising going to developing facilities in Athlone. They separted at junior level in all but name a couple of years before the actaul split i.e Buccs 2nds would be all Athlone, Buccs 3rds would be all ballinasloe

I am quite aware of the merger that happened, I was against it at the time on the grounds that the University is paid for by the Tax payer and one club should not have exclusive access to it and its facilities particuarly a club who have more than adequate funds.
Sorry but this is absolute rubbish, Bohs don't have to pay for the facilites but if other clubs many with less resources than Bohs do.
It isa well known fact that money was never an issue with Bohs, the money they make alone from the bar in Thomond park would pay for all their players wages and travelling expenses.

Can anyone explain why Garryowen are so hated? I'm beginning to hate them now for absolutely no reason.
Swap Munster for Garryowen there and you have the view of a fair proportion of the population of this country

So you must be the new club accountant?
Bohs make very little from the bar in Thomond Park, neither do they make much money from gate receipts (I know, I've done the gate a couple of times). Most money probably comes from having so many kids turn out at training on weekends.
I mentioned the advantages and disadvantages of being a University side above, many of the players who benefit from the free use of the facilities will have moved on from Bohs before their mid-20s, that's not the case with other clubs.

UL Bohs is not a university team like UCC, UCD & TCD. They don't have an underage section. Also, the players do not necessarily migrate to the other clubs in Limerick as a UCC player would.

Think you have the Treasurer confused with an accountant... So how much do you reckon they earn from the bar?

There are club grounds in Limerick (not Greenfields or Derryknockane) where you get to know what General Custer felt like both on and off the pitch. smileys/shock.gif

I'm not surprised that Garryowen are out in front here. The most successful clubs are always the least liked. And before Shannon starting winning everything 15 years ago, Garryowen were by far the most successful club in Limerick. Thirty odd senior cups and 2 AILs before Shannons first AIL. Since then Shannon have been the dominant force, but anyone old enough remembers that Garryown are always worse than Shannon smileys/smile.gif

All Club rugby supporters have to hate ( a bit strong ) the enemy
Garryowen for the money and influence ( most one cap wonders than any club in Ireland
Cookies for the supporters who support them on big days and declare their lifelong love ofpigs toes
Bohs Ah well we can put them and Crescent together for all the greatt players they have ruined and wasted thru the years
Thomond and Bruff we admire except when we have to play against them thats rough
Richmond we absolutely hate playing against them and saints
pres its so long since I met a Pres supporter you would forget they are still there
So we have to have someone to hate and the winner is Garryowen
