South Africa have made one change to their starting line-up for Saturday's vital second Test against the 2009 British & Irish Lions in Pretoria.
<DIV =pr-article->
Head Coach Peter de Villiers has chosen to drop last week's impressive flanker Heinrich Brüssow to the bench in favour of the returning Schalk Burger.
There is also no scrum-half replacement in the Springboks matchday 22, which means that Ruan Pienaar will act as cover should Fourie du Preez fail to complete the Loftus spectacle.
The only other change is on the bench, where hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle replaces prop Gurthrö Steenkamp in a squad that holds 725 caps.
"We believe in the abilities of our players and we are confident that they will take things up a few notches on Saturday," said De Villiers.
"We are a squad of 22 focused on a common objective, which is to go out and win a Test Series against a very good Lions team.
"We know that we will be faced by a Lions team that will be playing to level the Test Series and will provide us with a stern test. We must make sure that we are more than equal to the task."
More to follow...
South Africa: 15 Frans Steyn, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Adi Jacobs, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Juan Smith, 6 Schalk Burger, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 John Smit, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 Deon Carstens, 18 Andries Bekker, 19 Danie Rossouw, 20 Heinrich Brüssow, 21 Jaque Fourie, 22 Morné Steyn.
Date: Saturday, June 27
Kick-off: 14:00 (13:00 BST) </DIV>

At least Jacobs is still there. Was very poor the last day and I thought Fourie would come in. Interesting that he's gone with a five two split on the bench, with a specialist hooker too instead of two props.

No cover for du Preez?

No cover for du Preez?
Pienaar can cover scrummie. Then one of the Steyns would take over at out-half.

Unless we get our scrum and line out ball under control they could play the Von Trapp family in their back line and it wont make a difference - we'll get hosed ...
We have better backs, they have better forwards ... forwards trump backs ... rock, scissors, paper.

Forgot about Burger being back for the second test. Actually did a double take there for a sec,
the forum name made me freak out and think someone was coming out of retirement...again...
Although he's more of a beefy forward than a beefy back!!

IMO, they have the better, SH, OH, habana and steyns... our advantage is BOD, Roberts and Bowe. thats 4-3 to them
so why is our backline deemed to be superior?

While you may deem their half backs to be better, ours are still good enough to provide good ball to Roberts and BOD. And that's the key. They are in such formidable form that people still reckon our backline is more threatening. And to be honest, that showed last Saturday. And our back three are no slouches either

From where I was sitting Steyn was dreadful on Saturday.

Steyn offered very little but a big boot and the occasional knock on under a high ball. His catching technique made Daragh Hurley look like Shaun Payne.
Wouldn't have the wings far off 50/50 either, Habana's overrated and it's not as if Pietersen set the world alight. Outside of the half backs the Lions are well on top, as they showed Saturday when they got the ball.

Who said anything about last sat.? so now you're judging players on 1 performance?

I cant believe the Boks have dropped Brussow for a non-match fit Shalk Burger. Burger hasn't played for nearly 3 months, and he wasn't playing particularly well when he as injured. The Boks have chosen to fix a problem they didn't have, and yet have not addressed their porous midfield combination by keeping it intact.
The Lions should be encouraged by this.

Some Lion did mention that Steyn is now meant to be about 110 kg and, conclusively, Wikipedia confirms it!

With Brussow out, the Lions multi-phase attack will be more effective if they can shore up their set-piece. I'd expect the Lions backrow to be more prominent if they can secure better ball from scrum and lineout.

Have we ever tried Daragh at full back? We just don't experiment enough.
On an unrelated matter: Denis Hurley, quality winger.
