Munster have lodged an appeal against the six-week suspension handed down to Alan Quinlan by the ERC last week.

The back-row forward was given the ban for a stamping incident in the Heineken Cup win over Cardiff last Saturday.

The ERC have confirmed that they have received an appeal by Munster and it now looks like an Independent Appeal Committee will meet on the issue in early January.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but by appealing aren't we effectively resetting the clock?
In other words, he's now free to play until the hearing?

Surely theminimum suspension for stamping of 4 weeks will still apply?

That's true, if it was a full appeal then the clock would reset.
But because he pleaded guilty and they're only able to appeal the sentence it should mean at least four weeks.

1-So youy are saying the ban has to last a minimium of 4 weeks(According to whoe rules?)

2-Is he free to play now until the hearing?

3-Is the ban from all levels of rugby?

Won't happen but in any case it is worth the gamble as he would be mostly idle until the end of March.

I'm not saying the following is the case but,

as I said in another thread Biarritz\ appea;ed over August and succeeded,

so perhaps the ERC may have made a mistake with the ban, who knows, thus a 4 week or any ban may not be forthcoming

<TD =abstract>Munster today (Saturday) confirmed that they have lodged an appeal to ERC in relation to the suspension handed down to their flanker Alan Quinlan</TD></TR>
<TR>
<TD =article>Quinlan was handed a six week suspension by an independent ERC Disciplinary Committee after being cited for a stamp on Cardiff Blues replacement Mark Lewis.

At the hearing, Quinlan admitted the offence but Munster officials and their legal representative were surprised by the severity of the suspension given the nature of the incident and it is believed on that basis that the appeal has been lodged.

In November, Chris Budgen the Northampton Saints prop was cited for a similar offence, (Law 10.4 b) and was found guilty. However, that Committee determined that the offence did not warrant a red card and decided no sanction should be imposed.

Similarly, Trevor Brennan escaped sanction when it was again determined his offence (contravening Law 10.4 b) didn't warrant a red card while Leinster lock Owen Finnegan had a suspension of 21 days imposed after being found guilty of stamping.

Ospreys lock, Brent Cockbain was cited for stamping in the game against Sale Sharks and pleaded guilty to "an act of foul play", That particular Disciplinary Committee took into consideration, "strong mitigating factors" before imposing a 20 day suspension.</TD></TR></T></TABLE>

Just now watching the Munster/Ulster match played earlier in the season. There's Quinlan again stamping in full view on Justin Harrisson. Munster were in a good attacking position and his stupidity put a stop to all that and gave away a penalty. He didn't get a yellow but was still mouthing at the ref as he was walking away. The fact that Harrisson was holding him by the leg was no justification. Was there some incident in the away Cardiff match as well? I didn't see itbut have heard people talking about it.He's a great player but nevertheless at this stage IMHO he's a bit of a liability. Also, when was the last time we had a player cited for,and found guilty of this kind of thing? If it can't be got through to him that the red mist has to be controlled,as other players have, then TBH we're better off without him.

It's Quinnie's GAA genes that are to blame: in GAA circles he'd be applauded for being "manly" (that obscene GAA euphemism for dirty).

OD, Quinnie actually stamped on his calf. The knee went when two players fell on top of it as Lewis pulled down the ruck.

smileys/cool.gif I notice Martin Williams only got 3 weeks for a headbutt. Surely 4
weeks is sufficient. I also think he was encouraged to plead guilty on
the wink that the suspension would be light. Smacks a touch of the old

I'd settle for GAG THE LEINSTER WUM

Lewis's injury was brought on by collapsing the maul and the thing going over the top and bending him backwards. It had nothing to do with the stamp.

A nothing incident. Luckily there is no shortage of good forwards in Munster due to not having the Metrosexual gene that has ruined Dublin.

Will someone please upload the clip from the ML game where Lewis discusses the incident with Dowling/POC or DOC - I'm sure I heard Lewis say clearly that he saw the incident and had no problem with it. I'm not saying that I agree with him, but I believe that the ref's opinion should be included in this discussion.
